The Lexile Framework for Reading

What is a Lexile measure? A student has a Lexile measure that describes her reading ability: 1250L 1250L A Lexile measure is a number with an L after it. A text has a Lexile measure that describes its reading demand:

How can Teachers use Lexiles Know more about a students abilities and be able to differentiate instruction. Select materials based on each student s level. (Matching reading materials with ability allows students to practice reading without becoming frustrated by the material.) Provide scaffolding support for students not ready for specific texts. Supplement workbook instruction with ability group instruction.

The Lexile scale 1700L The Lexile scale is a developmental scale. Advanced reader 1210L 1030L 980L 1680L 1340L 770L 220L 320L 560L Readers get a Lexile measure from a reading comprehension test. 0L (BR) Texts get a Lexile measure from a piece of software called the Lexile Analyzer. Match students to materials that are just right When a reader and text match The reader will likely enjoy a successful reading experience without frustration or boredom. The reader can achieve functional comprehension of the text. The reader will be sufficiently challenged (by vocabulary and syntax) to improve. 75% is the right amount of challenge
