performance + sustainability INNOVATION MEANS BUSINESS SUSTAINABILITY Stewardship is the purposeful and responsible management of something entrusted to one s care, and INVISTA thinks about it in reference to the environment, employees and communities. Responsible stewardship is the foundation for INVISTA s Sustainability Vision: INVISTA is working with a biotechnology firm to develop onestep and two-step technologies to convert industrial waste gas carbon monoxide into butadiene, a key intermediate in INVISTA s route to nylon 6,6. The process uses biological organisms to convert carbon monoxide via fermentation to the desired. Initial commercialization for the two-step process (CO-derived 2,3-butanediol) is expected in 2016. By developing a cost-competitive, biological route to butadiene, INVISTA has a unique opportunity to take what many people see as an industrial waste product and turn it into a value-added chemical. INVISTA creates long-term value for society by protecting the environment and the safety and health of its workers and others; using resources more efficiently; consistently applying good science, and employing Market-Based Management TM principles. Together, these contribute to overall quality of life. INVISTA seeks ways to conserve resources, reduce emissions, and increase the utility and durability of its not just because these are the right things to do, but because they make sound business sense. INVISTA has committed to a goal of reducing energy intensity 20 percent by 2020. To achieve this 20 by 2020 goal, the company will seek to further optimize its current energy practices, while making capital investments at its manufacturing facilities to reduce the amount of energy used per ton of product. A firm commitment to resource stewardship, waste elimination and environmental protection is central to INVISTA s Market-Based Management TM culture, which guides every decision it makes. One example of resource stewardship is recycled. With decades of experience in polyamide resin production, INVISTA has developed a highly efficient and effective method of recycling post-industrial waste and repurposing it into highquality, recycled polyamide resin. INVISTA sells its recycled resin as compounding. In many cases, compounders can use this recycled resin instead of, or combined with, our prime resin. In this way, INVISTA provides a variety of options to its customers, who can then offer recycled options to their ultimate end user. KINGSTON, ONTARIO, CANADA SITE FOR NYLON POLYMER AND FIBER PRODUCTION 6 INVISTA Engineering Polymers INVESTING IN INNOVATION INVISTA is investing more than $100 million at its facility in Orange, Texas, USA, to install INVISTA s next-generation adiponitrile (ADN) technology. ADN is a critical intermediate chemical used in the manufacture of nylon 6,6. The technology involves a new butadiene-based chemistry that delivers significant air emission and waste reductions, improves product yields and ease of operations, and requires a lower annual maintenance investment compared to existing technology. INVISTA estimates that the new ADN process in Orange will result in benzene reductions of approximately 250 tons per year of total annual benzene contained in wastewater streams, and 7-12 tons per year of benzene air emissions at the facility. Implementing the technology will also result in a reduction in the amount of benzene in the waste sent off-site. ADN pilot plant in Orange, Texas, USA

people + product people = VALUE-ADDED SERVICES INVISTA Engineering Polymers TORZEN brand is more than a product; it represents our promise to be a comprehensive service provider for our customers. We have qualified professionals around the globe, all of whom offer technical assistance, product knowledge and industry expertise in developing innovative solutions. performance OF A LIFETIME TORZEN MARATHON PA66 PA66 resins offer an excellent balance of toughness, wear resistance, heat and chemical resistance. But current trends in the marketplace whether dealing with turbo-charged engines in the automotive sector or smaller packaging sizes in the E&E space are driving a need for improved heat aging characteristics, especially in the continuous use temperature range of 200 C to 220 C and peak temperature range of 240 C to 250 C. At these elevated continuous use temperatures, conventional PA66 has limitations, and other polymers such as higher temperature polyamides (PPA) and polyphenylene sulfides (PPS) are generally used due to superior heat aging characteristics. INVISTA s TORZEN Marathon resin responds to customer needs for a nylon with improved heat aging properties. INVISTA s tests show that TORZEN Marathon PA66 resin can retain 100 percent tensile strength after 1,000 hours at 210 C. That s a significant improvement versus conventional PA66, which shows about 50 percent retention. In addition, INVISTA s customers further benefit as this new technology broadens the processing window, offering a 40 to 50 percent improvement in flow versus conventional PA66 resins. It also enables customers to use tools that are already cut for PA66. TORZEN Marathon TM resins can allow for material consolidation. For example, with this technology, both the hot and cold sides of charge air cooler can be made with only one product. 14 INVISTA Engineering Polymers people + product TORZEN TM BRAND MEANS SERVICE: Process optimization through a scientific approach, with a goal to provide efficiencies such as reduced cycle time and improved yield via part quality and tooling improvements Product, molding and design training for enhancing nylon 6,6 processing Technical support during validations and qualifications New application development support including mold flow and FEA analysis APPLICATION-BACK PRODUCTS AND SERVICES INVISTA s engineering polymers product development is based on focused applications identifying and realizing those uses for nylon 6,6 for end customers that deliver the highest value compared to other materials. INVISTA s intent in its application-back product development is to understand the market and customer requirements, and translate these needs into product requirements. INVISTA s product development team then converts these needs into formulation design space, which allows the team to effectively develop focused on application spaces of interest. This scientific approach allows flexibility to modify formulations that optimize performance as required, while also allowing us to develop global formulations for global application spaces. ep.invista.com 15
