DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS MANAGEMENT BCAP 0012 and 1112 Computer Basics COURSE OUTLINE Summer 2006 (CRN 20265 and 20266) Mondays and Wednesdays 10:30am-12:25pm Instructor: Jennifer Reid Office: A244 Telephone: 604.323.5684 ext #3 E-Mail Address: jreid@langara.bc.ca Office Hours: Monday and Wednesday afternoons between 12:30-1:30pm. Sign up sheet will be posted in Room A219 during class otherwise call or email for an appointment. COURSE DESCRIPTION BCAP 0012 / BCAP 1112 is an introductory course that provides hands-on personal computer experience in the basics of using a mouse-based environment (Windows), word-processing (Word), spreadsheets (Excel), the Internet, and Email. A theory-based overview of hardware, software, and computer fundamentals is included. Practical training focuses on Windows XP and Microsoft Office 2003 (Word and Excel). This course is ideal for those with very little or no previous computer experience. GENERAL OUTCOMES At the conclusion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Identify computer components and how to buy a new computer. 2. Discuss computer terminology, the Internet and how the Internet works. 3. Distinguish between the Langara network and a home computer. 4. Perform folder and file management on the Langara network. 5. Formulate Excel workbooks and worksheets. 6. Create reports and documents using Word. 7. Adapt in-class assignments to real world situations. REQUIRED MATERIAL: 1. Microsoft Office 2003, Illustrated Series, Introductory, Beskeen/Cram/Duffy/Friedrichson/Reding, Thomson Course Technology, 2003. 2. 2 Blank 3 ½" High Density Disk all labeled with student name and student ID number. One of these disks will be used for practical tests and the other is for in-class work.

Regular class attendance is expected. 2. Students are responsible for all announcements made in class, whether the student is present or not. 3. Assignments must be submitted in class on the due date. Late assignments may be assigned a grade of zero or may be subject to penalty. It is required that students keep a copy of anything that is submitted for marks. 4. Exams must be written at the scheduled date, time, and location. Only a legitimate reason will be accepted for not writing an exam at the scheduled time. The student must notify the instructor either prior to or at the earliest opportunity to make alternate arrangements. A medical certificate may be required. If the makeup is not completed as arranged, the student will receive a mark of zero for that exam. 5. Final percentage grades will be converted to letter grades using the above grading scale. 6. Students must complete all the specified requirements of the course, or a final grade will not be given. 7. Course information is subject to change (consistent with College policy) with notice. 8. Students are responsible for maintaining a classroom atmosphere, which will promote and encourage learning. Frequent classroom disturbances either directly or indirectly as the result of a student's action may result in that student's removal from the course. It is the aim of the Department of Business Management of to promote throughout each course the mastery of core skills such as reading and reading comprehension, writing fluency, verbal articulation, and math development. These core skills will be practiced by means of student presentations and class participation, and will be evaluated on submitted work. Critical thinking and problem solving exercises will be encouraged at every opportunity.
