Installation of the KX-P8420 Print Driver And Support Files (Windows). Introduction: When installing the printer driver and support files for the KX-P8420 there are many options to consider. Choosing the incorrect options may cause the installation process to exclude desired support files. Considerations: Inserting the KX-P8420 installation CD into a CD-ROM drive will automatically start the installation process if auto-run is enabled. Auto-run is a setting in the computer that will automatically start a CD-ROM when it is inserted into a CD- ROM drive. If a computer does not have auto-run enabled, the installation process will need to be started manually. The default installation of the KX-P8420 is Compact. Windows 95/98 Compact will only load the Postscript printer driver. Typical will install the Postscript driver, Adobe Type Manager and fonts. Custom will install the Postscript driver, Adobe Type Manager with fonts and color support files. Windows NT Compact will only load the Postscript driver. Typical will also only load the Postscript driver. Custom will install the Postscript driver and color support files. The color support files are Pantone and CMYK color reference files that can be printed from the KX-P8420. The print outs of these files can be referred to for color matching within supported applications. The Adobe Type Manager and Postscript 3 fonts need to be installed after the KX-P8420 setup program has finished. The KX-P8420 setup program loads the installation files for the Adobe Type Manager, but does not actually install it. A shortcut to the Adobe Type Manager installation file is placed in the KX-P8420 group menu. Installation of the Adobe Type Manager also installs the Postscript 3 fonts. Do not attempt to install the Adobe Type Manager directly from the KX- P8420 installation CD, the installation will fail. Windows NT printer drivers have a different appearance than Windows 95/98 drivers. Options available to Windows 95/98 users are also available to Windows NT users, however installing and selecting the options may differ. The Adobe Type Manager is not needed for Windows NT and cannot be selected during the installation of the KX-P8420. The Postscript fonts are installed using Windows NT font installer.
Manually running setup on the KX-P8420 installation CD. 1) Insert the KX-P8420 Installation CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. If the installation process starts automatically skip steps 2-4 and proceed to the next section. 2) Click on Start and select Run. 3) In the "Open" dialog box type in the following path: X:\installr\setup. X = the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive. 4) Click OK and the KX-P8420 installation will start. Choosing the driver installation options that will provide all support files. 1) At the "Welcome" window click Next to proceed. 2) Click Yes to agree to the "Software License Agreement". 3) Select Custom in the "Setup Type" window as shown below. 4) Select Next at the "Choose Destination Location" window.
5) Select Next at the "Select Components" window. By default the Custom Setup Type selects all of the KX-P8420 support files. 6) Select Lpt1 or another valid port and select Next. If the KX-P8420 is on a network, it is simpler to select Lpt1 now during the driver setup. The network port can be added after setup in the Details tab of the driver. 7) Select Next at the "Start Copying Files" window. 8) Select Finish at the "Panasonic KX-P8420 Setup" window. Setup from the CD-ROM is complete. Installing the Adobe Type Manager (ATM) Windows 95/98. 1) Click Start and follow the pop-up menus to the ATM installer located in the Panasonic KX-P8420 group menu. The Adobe Type Manager Installer will run.
2) Click Install to start the Adobe Type Manager and font installation process. 3) Before using the Adobe Type Manager and fonts, Windows will need to be restarted. Click Restart Windows. Installing the Postscript 3 Fonts on Windows NT. This process can be used in Windows 95/98 if preferred. 1) Insert the KX-P8420 installation CD-ROM into the drive if it has been removed. 2) Click Start. 3) Select Settings. 4) Select Control Panel. 5) In the Control Panel double click on the Fonts folder. 6) A list of installed fonts are shown. Click on the word File in the menu bar of the Fonts folder window. 7) Select Install New Fonts, and the Add Fonts window is displayed.
8) Browse the KX-P8420 installation CD to the ps3fonts/ttype folder. 9) Click Select All. 10) Click OK. 11) The fonts are copied to the fonts folder. 12) Repeat steps 7 through 11, and install the type1 fonts from the ps3fonts/type1 folder. Printing the Color Support Files (Pantone.ps & CMYK Ref.ps) Before printing the color reference files, ensure that the KX-P8420 has been properly calibrated. Paper quality can have an effect on printed output. It will be beneficial to print the color reference files on any and all types of paper being used. 1) Start WebTools and select WebDownloader. Refer to the WebTools documentation for assistance using WebTools. 2) Click Browse, and browse to the C:\Program Files\Panasonic KX- P8420\ColorFiles directory. Select All Files(*.*) in the Files of type: dialog window. 3) Select the color reference file to print; either CMYK Ref.ps or Pantone.ps.
4) Click Open. 5) Click Send file in the WebDownloader window and the color reference file will print. Printing the color reference files when the KX-P8420 is connected locally (through LPT1), making WebDownloader unavailable. 1) From a DOS Prompt type the command shown in the illustration. C:\Program Files\Panasonic KX-P8420\ColorFiles> copy cmykre~1.ps lpt1 The above command will print the CMYK reference chart. Exchange CMYKre~1.ps with Pantone.ps to print the Pantone reference chart.
