Completed classes for Licensed Mental Health Counselor Barbara was employed by the Sarasota County School Board from January,1978 to July, 2012. She was a substitute teacher and paraprofessional until 1983 when she completed teacher certification. From 1983 through 1993 Barbara taught exceptional student education (ESE) students mostly working with Emotionally Handicapped students grade 9-12 at Oak Park School (aka Sarasota County Student Center) and Riverview High School. She served as Red Cross Youth Advisor, Voter Registration Chairperson, Newspaper Recycling Program Chairperson, Faculty Council Member, Graduation Committee Chairperson and Educational Specifications Committee for the Building of Oak Park School. At Riverview she served on the Core Committee for the Motivator Program, Rams Football Boosters Club and Century Club 1986-93, Chairperson Football Banquet Decorations Committee 1988-90. She received her Master's Degree in Counselor Education from USF in May,1993 and became the high school counselor at Oak Park School for the 1993-94 school year. In 1995 she joined the staff of Cyesis, the teen parent program, as Counselor and ESE Liaison. She was Graduation Committee Chair, Student Study Team Chairperson, Staffing Specialist and a Gender Equity Trainer for Sarasota County Schools teachers and counselors. Barbara was also a part time therapist for Coastal Recovery Centers from 1996-98. Barbara was a counselor at Venice High School (VHS) from 1998-2012 serving as the Visual and Performing Arts Counselor. She started many new programs at VHS including co-founder of the Graphic Arts Academy in 2000, forerunner to the Visual and Performing Arts Academy. The Rotary Futures Scholarship Center was also implemented in 2000 to aid students in their post secondary education search and funding. Barbara designed the Guidance component and served on the Board from 2000-2010. In 2001, Barbara developed and coordinated the Indian Quest Mentoring Program which was later used as a model for community mentoring programs. She was the Alateen Advisor, Coordinator and Co-Founder of the TRIBE Advisory Committee, Junior Awards Program Founder and Coordinator, Co-Founder of South County College Night at Venice High, developed a Spin Night for incoming freshman and their parents to learn about the school and Financial Aid Parent Seminars for college bound seniors.

Organizations and Community Service Kids in Crisis, Community in Response: 1988-90 Barbara served on the Steering Committee and as Employment Chairperson assisting adjudicated youth in finding employment. This countywide program was started by Judge Emmanuel LoGalbo and resulted in the development of The Glasser Schoenbaum Human Services Center to coordinate human services within our community. St. Thomas More Religious Education Instructor and Choir Member 1980-87. St. Michael's Church Folk Choir 1992-95 As a member of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) from 1989-2010, Barbara served as Political Action Representative 1989-94, the Executive Board of FFCEC as the State Membership Chair from 1992-95, President of Chapter 296 in 1993-94 and Chair of the State convention for 1,000 members in Sarasota 1996. American Vocational Association, Counseling Division 1995-97 Florida Association of Counseling and Development 1992-96 Teacher Education Council ESE Representative 1988-92. Committees: Bylaws, Professionalism, Communications Arlington Park Neighborhood Association Sarasota Sunrise Kiwanis 1999-2009 and Kiwanis Club of Sarasota 2009-10 provided opportunities for her to serve the community in numerous service projects. She served as the Kiwanis Advisor to the Pine View Key Club and Chairperson of the Kiwanis Scholarship Committee 2000-2009, President of Sunrise Kiwanis 2004-05 and Secretary 2006-09. Manasota Track Club 1994.-Present.Barbara served as the Chairperson of the Summer Beach Runs 1996-98, Board Member 1997-98, Chairperson of the annual banquet 1997-2000 and Captain of the Relay for Life Team 2000-02. Barbara competed in many 5K,10K and 15K races from 1994-2010 including the Disney Half Marathon 1999, Siesta Key Triathlon 2000 and the San Diego Rock and Roll Marathon 2002. Summer of 1994 and summer of 2002, Barbara was one of twenty Winant- Clayton Volunteers selected from across the country for a cultural exchange program in London, England. In 1994, she worked with the homeless in a soup kitchen at Providence Row on the east side of London and counseling young homeless women ages 18 to 25. Her volunteer assignment in 2002 was at the Peckham Settlement Community Centre where she provided social services for the Asylum Seekers(immigrants), Travellers (Irish Gypsies) and Pensioners. Since her retirement in 2012 she has continued as an active volunteer in the community. She cofounded a weekly support group for Cardiac Rehab patients called Healing Hearts at Health Fit 2011-13. At Cat Depot, a not-for-profit no kill shelter, Barbara is a front desk ambassador. She also works on fund raising and education programs co-founding Critter Camp for children ages 7-12. She is an Advisor for students grades 6-12 at the St. Thomas More Youth Group. This year she Co-Chaired a program called Urban Plunge to teach the students about the plight of the homeless in Sarasota, working with the Salvation Army, Food Bank and Resurrection House.
