The New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street is the hub of this district. Until September 2001 the World Trade Center towered above the entire district with its massive twin towers. But on September 11, 2001, the unbelievable happened. BROADWAY is the most famous street in New York and extends north to south through Manhattan. The Theater District is the center of entertainment and the theater world. The most popular attractions on Broadway are the shows and musicals. CENTRAL PARK is a large parkland in the middle of the island which is the recreation area and green lungs of Man - hattan. Especially on weekends thousands of people come here to go for walks, to go jogging and to just relax. Many pop groups have already impressively performed open-air concerts here. There are about eighteen million people living in greater New York. The metropolis exists of five very different districts: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. Manhattan is still the most densely populated island in the world with 24.000 people per square kilometer. STATUE OF LIBERTY is situated on a small island called Liberty Island south of Manhattan. Lady Liberty was a gift from France as a memorial to the common hardwon battle for the independence of the United States of America. The top of the crown of the 46 Meter high statue can be reached by using the elevator and stairs. CHINATOWN is another part of Manhattan which represents with 150.000 inhabitants the world s largest settlement of Chinese outside of Asia. EMPIRE STATE BUILDING was built in 1931 from sandstone and granite, and was afterwards for over 40 years the highest building in the world. With the elevator you can reach the panorama terrace on the 86 floor. From there the view of the skyline is indescribable and overwhelming. WASHINGTON D.C. The capital of the U.S. was artificially planned and built. The cityscape is dominated by wide streets, large parks and many monumental buildings. The Capitol of Washington houses the headquarters of the two chambers of the US government: the Senate and the House of Representatives. The White House is the office and residence of the President of the United States.
Zusammenfassung Seite 3 MONUMENT VALLEY is an endlessly-wide and absolutely un - touched landscape, interspersed with a few rocks which have the shapes of peaks, needles or blocks. Monument Valley is not a valley but remnant of an extensive plateau. A large portion of this plateau was crushed into sand by wind and rain thousands of years ago. The rust-colored, six hundred meter high rocks are the last monuments of this time. TRUCKS AND TRAFFIC MOTELS AND FAST FOOD The most typical American accommodation are the motels, which you can find all over the country. Part of every motel s standard furnishings is a parking spot at the door, a shower, toilet and of course the indispensable American television set. It is well-known how much the Americans love their fast food and that there are many of these restaurants around. Of course this is not the healthiest nutrition and besides it produces a lot of garbage. Another typical American snack is frozen yogurt, frozen lemonade or donuts in different variations and flavors. HOLLYWOOD ARCHES NATIONALPARK offers the largest collection of natural stone arches from our world. Three hundred million years ago a large, dried out salt lake left behind a thick layer of salt. The historical rock stratum began to bend from this unstable layer of salt. Afterwards cracked places began to erode away due to the wind and weather. The most famous of all the arches, which is on many postcards and brochures, is the Delicate Arch. The US streets and freeways are a bit different than those in Austria. An unmistakable trademark of America are the large trucks. Who is not amazed when one of these rolling giants is coming towards them for the first time. Americans drive on the right hand side like in Austria. Generally speaking, the Americans drive very correctly and according to the law. The speed limits are 55 miles per hour on the highways and 70 miles per hour on the freeways, converted that is about 90 and 110 km/h respectively. LOS ANGELES The mega-city of L.A. is made up of numerous cities that have grown together. There is no natural downtown. The extension of the city from north to south like from east to west amounts to over 100 kilometers. No less than 14.5 million people live in this conurbation. An extensive expressway system was built around the individual city districts of the large, expanding L.A. Molochs. For a long time they did without public transportation. Instead of it, the freeways were built wider. Twelve lane freeways and four storied intersections were not uncommon in Los Angeles. is the most famous district of LA. The first film studio settled down here around 1920 and in the following decade Hollywood became the indisputable number one in the film and TV industries. CALIFORNIA SAN FRANCISCO UNIVERSAL STUDIOS Next to Disneyland, this is the most popular amusement park in greater LA. One finds here the original scenery and props from famous movies and TVshows like Back to the Future, Knight-Rider, Uncle Tom s cabin, King-Kong, Beethoven the dog etc. CALICO is an old silvermining town from the nineteenth century. During the Golden Ages, over a thousand people lived in this city. As the price for silver dropped, the people fled in masses. Today Calico is a ghost-town. In the last decades this town was rebuilt to the original style. Restored hotels, saloons, coaches and many other props give the feeling of former times. also known as the Golden State, is in many respects the state of records. In California you can find Death Valley which is the lowest point of the continental US, and within the Sierra Nevada s mountains the highest point. Also the highest and oldest trees of the world, the Redwoods and the Sequoias, are rooted in Californian soil. With over 35 million inhabitants, California is in first place in the population statistics of the US. The Californian climate is unique because of the southern position and the closeness to the Pacific. An ideal climate for travellers, tourists, surfers, sailors and sunbathers. lies on a hilly peninsula between the Pacific and San Francisco Bay and is home to about 700.000 people. Because of the risk of earthquakes, skyscrapers have to be built by special methods of construction. The tallest building of the city is the Transamerica Pyramid. In Chinatown nearly 80.000 people from East Asia give off the exotic flair of China. The Cable-cars are a distinctive trademark of San Francisco. They are driven by a steel cable which moves at a constant speed under the tracks. The Golden Gate Bridge is the symbol of the city. The bridge is named after the Golden Gate which is the San Francisco bay s only opening out to the ocean. The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the largest suspension bridges in the world.
