1 New York Geography: New York is located on the east coast of the United States. Its official name is City of New York, and it s often called New York City. More than 8 million people live in New York. About 45 per cent are white, 27 % are black, 27 % are Hispanics and 10 % are Asians. New York consists of (besteht aus) five boroughs. They are called: Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. The Bronx is a dangerous part of New York because the criminal rate is very high there. Manhattan is the borough which is most popular because it s the centre of business life. Many foreigners live in Manhattan, but in their own neighbourhoods, for example: Chinatown, Little Italy, Spanish Harlem, etc. Queens is the borough with a population of about 2,2 million people. There you can find the two airports: John F. Kennedy and La Guardia airport. The famous Yankee Stadium is located in the South of the Bronx. A lot of sights are situated (befinden sich) in Manhattan, for example the Stature of Liberty, Central Park, the Empire State Building, Broadway, The Museum of Modern Art, Ground Zero (the site of the destroyed World Trade Center) and so on. Moreover, in New York there are more than 500 galleries, 200 museums and restaurants. The Hudson River and the East River flow through New York, so the boroughs are linked (verbunden) by many bridges, for example the Brooklyn Bridge between Manhattan and Brooklyn. New York s nickname is The Big Apple. History: 1626 Peter Minuit bought the Island Manna hatta from the natives for 60 Gulden. He called the capital of the colony Nieuw Nederland, Nieuw Amsterdam. Soon there was a lot of crime in the city, so Petrus Stuyvesant was appointed to be the first governor of Nieuw Amsterdam in He built the first hospital, the first school and the first prison there. In the war between England and the Netherlands in 1664, Nieuw Netherlands was given to the English and they renamed Nieuw Amsterdam to New York as an honor of the Duke of York. From 1788 to 1790 New York was the capital of the USA. In the 19th century the city got bigger, so the city planners decided to build the streets into straight lines in Avenues go from North to South, streets go from East to West. The only exception (Ausnahme) is Broadway. In 1858 the construction work for Central Park began and they were finished in In 1904 the first subway opened in NYC. In the first half of the 20th century, New York became a centre of industry and business, but in the commercial crisis the unemployment rate rose up to 25 percent. After that, the first skyscrapers were built, for example the Woolworth Building or the Chrysler Building. The highest building of New York is the Empire State Building, it s 449 meters high. In 2001, terrorists destroyed the World Trade Center.
