Heavy Vehicle and Trailer Damage Criteria. A heavy vehicle and or trailer determined by an insurer (or other notifier) is to be a total loss should be assessed against the following criteria. damage induced by collision or impact, water inundation or other weather event, fire dismantling or stripping If the criteria is met, the vehicle must be classified as a Statutory Write-Off (SWO).

There are ten (10) separate areas to be assessed. If a vehicle over 4.5 tonnes is assessed to have sustained damage to 4 or more areas which satisfy the criteria the vehicle is deemed a SWO. There are 8 listed criteria for semi trailers. and each area should be inspected for loading such that the individual structural components/members have been structurally fractured, cut, cracked, buckled and/or folded over onto itself, then the component has an area of structural damage. Inspect trailer for damage on the following components. Chassis twist Chassis for Diamonding Chassis fracture/mounts Suspension/Axles Suspension mounts Drawbar/Pin Body Twist Body Fracture. When any four components are damaged, the trailer is to be deemed as a statutory write off. If the trailer does not include a body E.g. flat top trailer, when 3 of the criteria are met the trailer is to be determined as a statutory write-off.
Event Criteria Water Damage If the vehicles internal cabin has been immersed in any water for any period above the inner door sill, the truck is to be deemed to be a statutory write off. Fire Damage. A fire whether in cabin or external causes the internal and/or external paint to blister on any 3 of the following structural members, cabin roof, cabin pillars, chassis, engine or body, the truck is to be deemed a SWO. Vehicle Stripping Where a vehicle is stripped of interior or exterior parts, panels and components such as wheels, bonnet, guards, doors, boot lid and interior parts or a combination of these items, and is determined to be a total loss, it is to be classified as a SWO.
