COURSE SYLLABUS 2 ECE 159 Health Safety Issues in the Child Care Setting Course Information: 1. The instructor will try to maintain the following course schedule, however changes may take place without notice (especially if needed to accommodate guest speakers 2. All assignments, are to be submitted preferably by computer or typewriter. If they must be hwritten they need to be clearly legible. 3. The last day to add classes to drop with no grade placed on permanent record is 9/10/10. The deadline to apply for Credit/No Credit option is 9/26/10. The last day to drop classes with option of W grade is 11/20/10. NOTE: It is the student s responsibility to take these actions through the Admissions Office. 4. No make-up exams will be given without prior consent from the course instructor. This especially pertains to the Saturday classes that involve certification in Infant, Child Adult CPR First Aid. 5. Content, assignments, exams presented in this course syllabus are subject to change by the course instructors in order to adapt individualize learning. 6. Students are expected to adhere to a code of conduct that requires honest ethical academic behavior respect for others as well as for the learning environment. 7. The college policy on attendance, as stated in the catalog is: students missing one more class hour than the unit value for a particular course, without making prior arrangements may, at the instructor s option be dropped without possibility of credit. 8. Students with disabilities, including chronic illnesses, learning /or psychological disabilities are encouraged to meet with the instructor to discuss their individual needs develop a plan for special accommodations. Course Requirements: 1. Regular attendance, preparation active participation in the class. Suggestions for increasing participation include: A) Having fun in class; B) Being on time for class; C) Reading assignments instructor houts starting your journal reflection (see below) prior to the corresponding class; D) Sharing your unique knowledge, experiences, ideas in class discussions; E) Bringing relevant information, resources, books, or materials you have on the topic being presented. Points will be deducted for arriving to class late /or leaving class early without appropriate notification of the instructor. Your participation will account for 10% of your final course grade. 2. Assigned readings as required. See course outline for weekly assigned chapter in Healthy Young Children. Additional houts web site visits will also be assigned. Students are expected to complete required readings prior to the class meeting contribute to large small group activities discussions. 3. Journal/Reflective Entries. Minimum of one (preferably) typed page due per class meeting. Your journal/reflection should reflect your responses to lectures /or reading assignments (both web sites text book) how you are to apply it to your work /or interactions with children families. The instructor will assign reflective topics /or questions each week. You will submit your journal/reflection each class. Each journal is worth 40 points for a total of 400 points.
COURSE SYLLABUS 3 ECE 159 Health Safety Issues in the Child Care Setting Journals will NOT generally be accepted late, however you have two (2) late journal opportunities in which you can turn in a journal late it will be accepted without a deduction in grading. Journals will be in place of classroom examinations, should be treated as such. Your journals will account for 40% of your final course grade. 4. Completion of a Home /or Workplace Safety Checklist This will account for 10% of your final course 5. Individual/Group Project. Groups of 1 to 3 students research present a health /or safety inservice presentation of approximately 10-15 minutes to class. Groups must utilize at least (4) four sources including at least (2) two of the following: an appropriate Internet web site, relevant research article, national/state resources, /or a community resource. Each group will develop a 1-2 page hout outlining the topic resources to be provided to all students for their resource file. This is due at least one week prior to their presentation, so that the instructor can copy distribute the evening of your presentation. The Group Project will account for 30% of your final course grade. 6. Resource file. This will account for 10% of your final course grade. This will include a binder (hard copy) /or electronic file of class houts other information resources the student may already have or collect that pertain to health, safety nutrition. Evaluation: Attendance /Participation 20% Approximately 20 pts./class 200 points Journals/Reflections 40% Includes 10 separate entries 400 points Safety Checklist 10% Home &/or Workplace 100 points Individual/Group Project 20% Class presentation 200 points Resource File 10% Individually contracted 100 points Total: 1000 points Grading Criteria: 1000-900 points = A, 899-800 points B, 799-700 points C, 699-600D Credit/no credit grade option minimum of 700 points needed to receive class credit.
