READINGS: Can be found on Reserves Express; go to library web page, or see link in Blackboard. WEB PAGE: or access Blackboard rough my.ipfw.edu or at COURSE GOALS 1. To gain knowledge about normative child development. 2. To understand e scientific research process as it applies to e study of child development. 3. To understand e implications of experiences in childhood, bo inside and outside of e family. COURSE STRUCTURE This is a hybrid course. That means at significant content (in is case, most lectures and some videos or video clips) will be delivered online. I will try to limit e new online material to approximately 75 minutes of material a week, but some weeks may be shorter and some longer. We will meet for 75 minutes once a week on Thursdays. During class time, ere will be group activities, some videos, and weekly discussions of assigned readings. In e online course site in Blackboard, besides e lectures and videos, students will be required to take part in online discussions and regular quizzes over e book. Exams will be delivered online. ATTENDANCE (up to 5 extra credit points) Your attendance is expected at all Thursday class meetings, and will be taken every Thursday after e first class period. You will have an opportunity to earn points rough participation in activities at will be taking place in class. Perfect (or near perfect) attendance will also earn extra credit (no classes missed = 5 points; one class missed = 4 points; two classes missed = 2 points). Out of consideration for oers in e class, please do not arrive late or leave early. If I see at you are consistently arriving late, I will discuss it wi you. Under no circumstances oer an sudden acute illness or oer emergency should you leave class early or temporarily wiout discussing it ahead of time wi me. You are responsible for all material missed due to your absence; you may not turn in any assignments or activity reports if you are not in attendance.
PSY REQUIREMENTS 1. Exams: There will be five multiple choice exams each wor 50 points, based primarily on e text and lectures, wi e possibility of some questions from videos. (250 points) 2. Chapter quizzes: There will be 15 chapter quizzes, based only on e textbook, wor 10 points each. You can take each quiz up to ree times, and you will receive e highest score you earned, no matter when you took it (first, second, or ird time). The ree lowest-scoring quizzes will be dropped. (120 points) 3. In-class activities (40 points + 10 extra credit points) 4. In-class discussions (30 points + 5 extra credit points) 5. Online discussions in Blackboard (40 points) TOTAL POSSIBLE POINTS: = 480 points EXTRA CREDIT: 10 (in-class activities); 5 (in-class discussions); 5 (attendance) points. FINAL GRADES Your final grade will be based on total points. Final grades will be assigned as follows: A (90% or better) B (80% - 89%) C (70% - 79%) D (60% - 69%) F 287 or less (59% or less) Plus and minus grades may be assigned to students who are near e top or bottom of e ranges for each grade. Attendance will be taken into account when making ose decisions. EXAMS (250 points) There will be five multiple choice exams, each wor 50 points, based primarily on e text and online lectures, wi e possibility of some questions from films. Exams will be delivered online over a sixday period. One you start e exam, you will have 45 minutes to complete it. You are on e honor system not to use your books and notes while taking e exam, or to share any information about e exam wi fellow students. Items will be chosen from a larger pool, erefore not all students will necessarily have all of e same items. Exams will be accessible from 8 a.m. on e starting date until midnight on e ending date. The dates are below: Exam 1: September 20 rough September 25 Exam 2: October 11 rough October 16 Exam 3: November 8 rough November 13 Exam 4: November 29 rough December 4 Exam 5: December 13 rough December 18
PSY MISSING AND MAKEUP EXAMS Students may choose to retake one of e earlier exams (1-4) late in e semester (see dates below). If a student misses an exam during e period during which it s available, e student can take e exam during e retake period. Students may only retake one exam or make up one missing exam. If you have a serious illness or oer emergency requiring you to miss a second exam s window, you should contact me to discuss your personal circumstances. I expect such circumstances to be very rare. The retaken exam will be similar but not identical to e original exam for at unit. If e later score is higher, at will be e score used; if e later score is lower, e score used will be an average of e two exam scores. Makeup and retake exams will be also taken inside Blackboard. You will be permitted to retake e exam only once, and it will be available inside Blackboard between 8 a.m. December 9 and midnight December 18. I will need to be informed if you are going to be taking a makeup or retake, and for which exam; ere will be a sign-up sheet passed around in class e week after Exam 4 (December 5 ). QUIZZES (120 points) There will be 15 chapter quizzes, based only on e textbook, wor 10 points each. It is strongly recommended at you read and study e chapter before you take e quiz, and at you take each quiz early during e period it is available. The purpose of e quiz is to help you learn e textbook material, and to help you prepare in advance for class. You will drop e lowest scoring ree quizzes. If you miss a quiz, it will just become one of e dropped scores; us you can miss ree quizzes wiout penalty. If you miss more an ree quizzes, you will not be able to earn e points for ose quizzes. You can take each quiz up to ree times. I strongly recommend at you re-study e chapter between quizzes. You will get e highest score to at quiz, regardless of when you took it (i.e., on e first, second, or ird attempt). Each quiz s questions will be selected from a much larger pool of questions. Because of e large database of items, it is likely at ere will be different combinations of questions for each version at you take, and all of e questions may be different, or some may overlap. You will be able to see e responses and e errors you make as soon as you take e quiz, and ey will always remain visible to you. Some items from quizzes will also be in e databases for e exams. Quizzes will be open for ten days, beginning at 8 a.m. on e first date and ending at midnight on e last date. Quizzes will not be reopened once e close date is reached. The dates will sometimes overlap, so it s possible at more an one quiz will be open at e same time. 4 PSY IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES ( extra credit) We will have a variety of in-class activities each Thursday. The class will begin wi a review of e online lectures and chapter readings for e week. I will post an announcement online as to what material is expected to be completed prior to at class (chapter and online lecture and/or video). Following e review will be a video or activity. Class will end wi discussions of assigned readings. The first two activities will be structured as follows: 1. Review of day s material. Students will prepare a typed short list of main points and questions about e material for e day (more details will be provided in Blackboard). You will turn in at list at e end of class, and it will be graded out of 2 points (0 = not turned in or unacceptable; 1 = acceptable; 2 = better an acceptable, good). Students will discuss eir questions and main points in a small group for approximately 10 minutes, and decide on two or ree issues to raise for e whole class. We will spend up to 20 additional minutes discussing issues raised in e small groups wi e whole class. (Points possible, 2 per class period.) 2. In-class assignment or video. The rest of class time will be spent wi a group assignment or a video. When we have a group assignment, groups will turn in a written report of eir work. The group report will be graded as above (0 = not turned in or unacceptable; 1 = acceptable; 2 = better an acceptable, good), and each student in e group will earn whatever score e group report receives. (Points possible, 2 per class period.) When we have a video, students will write a brief individual report on e video after class and submit it in Blackboard wiin 48 hours, again earning 0 to 2 points as defined above. (Points possible, 2 per class period.) No points can be earned for eier of ese activities if you are not in class at day. There are 14 class periods where points can be earned for ese activities, and a maximum of 4 points could be earned per class. Thus, a student who earned e maximum possible could eoretically earn 56 points. I will base grades on receiving 40 points for ese activities, but permit students to earn 10 extra credit points, or a total of 50 points. I will assign students to groups, which will remain in place until e next exam, when new group assignments will take place. IN-CLASS DISCUSSIONS (30 points + 5 extra credit ) During e last 20 minutes of class on Thursdays a discussion will be held. These discussions will be about articles which you can access from Reserves Express, and rough a link in Blackboard. These articles will not be specifically covered on exams, alough ey are relevant to topics under study, so ey may help on exams. If you do not wish to stay for a discussion, you may leave when e oer activities for e day are completed. Please do not attend e discussion if you have not read e article being discussed. To gain points for ese discussions you must prepare typewritten questions or comments about e article assigned for at day. The questions and comments should be about ings you would like to have discussed about e article. They should not be exam-type questions.
PSY To gain credit you must turn in a minimum of one question or comment up to a maximum of five questions and/or comments for each discussion you attend. You may not submit questions or comments if you do not attend e discussion under any circumstances, even if you are sick or have an emergency on e last possible discussion day, so it is wise not to leave ese until e end of e semester. The questions or comments are to be prepared prior to class and typed, and turned in following e discussion. When you attend a discussion, you may earn up to five points (one per question or comment) for up to five questions or comments. You may gain as many total points as you wish to a maximum of 30 points + 5 extra credit points. A person could gain 30 points most easily by attending six discussions and preparing five discussion questions/comments for each. DISCUSSION READINGS These articles can be found in Reserves Express, eier directly linked on e Helmke Library web page, or linked inside Blackboard. Date Article Sept. 5 Genes in context. Sept. 12 The womb. Your moer. Yourself Sept. 19 Preconception care for men. Sept. 26 Breastfeeding and e use of human milk. Oct. 3 How social safety net programs affect family... Nov. 7 Keys to quality infant care. Nov. 14 Lifelong impact of early self-control. Nov. 21 The multiple dimensions of video game effects. Dec. 5 Moral judgment and action in preverbal... Dec. 12 Spanking and child development. ELECTRONIC OUT-OF-CLASS DISCUSSIONS (40 points) We will be using e Discussions feature in Blackboard to hold discussions outside of class. I will monitor e list and occasionally post my own topic, questions, replies, and comments. The class web page has a set of guidelines for posting messages. Please read and follow it. A. Discussion Topics (30 points) For each discussion topic, you should locate information about research on some topic related to child development, and fitting in to e general subject matter of e unit currently under study. I will provide a list of sample topics and dates when ose topics are suited to e content under study/ You can choose from at list, or choose your own. In eier case, you must ask me if e topic is acceptable. Partly is is to make sure at e topics fit e scientific framework, and also to prevent several people from using e same topic. Do not proceed wi your topic wiout my written approval.
PSY For each topic posting you should (1) Provide information about e topic in some detail, including referencing where you found it (including a URL if e information came from e web), (2) say what you ink about it, and (3) encourage oers to participate in discussion of your topic. You should submit is information to me in a Word document (attached to an ), and I will post it and indicate e name of e student who sent it. Each topic is wor 15 points (and will be graded based on its quality). The grading criteria will include e leng and dep of e posting, e degree to which it is based on scientific information, and (to a lesser degree), grammar and spelling. I will create one sample discussion in Blackboard for you to use as a model. You are expected to create two topics across e semester. In order to spread topics across e semester, e due dates will depend on your last name: Names First due date Second due date Last names U to Z Sept. 9 Oct. 28 Last names K to O Sept. 16 Nov. 4 Last names A to E Sept. 30 Nov. 18 Last names P to T Oct. 7 Nov. 25 Last names F to J Oct. 21 Dec. 9 B. Participation in Online Discussion (10 points) Over e course of e semester you are expected to post at least ten messages in e online discussion forum. Messages can consist of reactions to or oughts about readings, lectures, films, in-class discussion, or responses to oer students discussion topics (A., above). Messages can also be comments about issues from outside of class, as long as e topic is relevant to e class. Posts can originate wi you, or ey can be responses to e postings of oer students (or mine). You will earn one point for each message you post, however you may not get credit for more an ree messages during any grading period (period between exams). This ensures at you will spread your messages across e semester. You may send more messages, however, you may only earn ree points per grading period.
