Minor cracks incidental to the usual methods of manufacture, or minor chipping resulting from customary methods of handling in shipment and delivery, shall not be deemed grounds for rejection. 2.1.6 Sampling and Testing.1 The purchaser or his authorized representative shall be accorded proper facilities to inspect and sample the units at the place of manufacture from lots ready for delivery..2 Sample and test units in accordance with ASTM Method C-140 2.1.7 Rejection.1 In case the shipment fails to conform to the specified requirements, the manufacturer may sort it, and new test units shall be selected at random by the purchaser from the retained lot and tested at the expense of the manufacturer. In case the second set of test units fails to conform to the specified requirements, the entire lot shall be rejected. -P 2-

2.1.8 Expense of Tests The expense of inspection and testing shall be borne by the purchaser unless otherwise agreed. 2.1.9 Submittals.1 Submit shop or product drawing and product data..2 Submit samples of Interlocking porous paving stones to indicate color and shape selections..3 Submit sieve analysis and certificate of compliance for grading of bedding aggregate..4 Submit test results for compliance of paving unit requirements from an independent testing laboratory in accordance with ASTM C936..5 Certificate of compliance and sieve analysis for gradation of porous opening filler aggregate, to VDOT #8 or ASTM C-33 #8 (approximately 42% voids) 2.1.10 Site Sample Panel Install a 3 ft. x 3 ft. (1m X 1m) paver area as described in Section 3. This area will be used to determine pattern(s), method of installation and grid opening infill. This shall be the standard from which the work will be judges. 2.1.11 Environmental Conditions.1 Do not install sand or pavers during heavy rain or snowfall..2 Do not install on frozen materials. 2.2 AGGREGATE BEDDING COURSE 2.2.1 Bedding aggregate shall be clean, open graded material suited to meeting VDOT #8 or ASTM C-33 #8 (approximately 42% voids) Sieve Size The bedding aggregate gradation shall conform to: % Passing VDOT #8 % Passing ASTM 8 1/2 100 100 3/8 92 +/- 8 85-100 #4 25 +/- 15 10-30 #8 Max. 8 0-10 #16 Max. 5 0-5 -P 3-

2.3 EDGE RESTRAINT 2.3.1 All edges of the installed paving stones shall be restrained with edge material designed to retain sand setting bed. The type of edge restraint shall be approved at locations as noted on the plans. 2.3.2 The edge restraint may be: 3.0 EXECUTION.1 Poured in place concrete curbs, combination curb and gutter or sidewalks..2 Plastic edging selected specifically for light duty or industrial applications and anchored firmly into the compacted aggregate base course with galvanized metal pins 3/8 (10 mm) diameter, 10-12 (250-300 mm) long..3 Aluminum or steel edging with smooth face on paver side of installation stakes or pins joined to the edging should be on the outside. Stakes should extend completely into the base material. Specification should require light duty or industrial application..4 Pressure treated lumber staked to the outside or center dowled. Filter cloth at all joints to prevent sand migration..5 Sawed asphalt or other suitable methods that prohibit paving stone movement and provide sad setting bed retention. Installer Qualification Engage an installer who has successfully completed within the last 5 years at least 5 unit paver applications similar in type and size to that of this project and who will assign mechanics from these earlier applications to this project, of which one will serve as lead mechanic. Installer shall provide certification of experience and current contractors and business license in the state where work is performed. 3.1 PREPARATION OF THE BASE COURSE 3.1.1 A suitable base must be prepared as detailed in other sections of the project specifications. 3.1.2 The base course shall be shaped to grade and cross section with an allowable tolerance of 1/2 (15 mm) in ten feet when tested with a straight edge. Areas which fail shall be scarified, material added if required, regarded and compacted to specified tolerances. 3.1.3 The compacted base shall be 3-7/8 to 4-1/2 (115 mm to 140 mm) below final grade for 3-1/8 (8 cm) pavers. Base should be designed similar to an equivalent thickness of asphalt. -P 4-

3.2 CONSTRUCTION OF THE AGGREGATE BEDDING COURSE 3.2.1 The finished base course shall be approved before the placement of the sand bedding course. 3.2.2 The aggregate bedding course shall be spread evenly over the area to be paved and the screeded to a level that will produce 1 to 1-1/2 (25 mm-40 mm) thickness when compacted by vibratory plate compactor or roller capable of 3,000-5,000 lbs. compaction force. The compaction shall continue until the open graded aggregate base is fully choked and stabilized. Normally, it is good practice to have finished elevation of concrete porous paving units slightly higher than adjacent curb, gutters, other paving, to allow for any minor settling that may occur within the base. 3.2.3 Once screeded, leveled and compacted to the desired elevation, this aggregate bedding course shall not be disturbed in any way. 3.3 INSTALLATION OF INTERLOCKING CONCRETE POROUS PAVING STONES OR CONCRETE GRID PAVING UNITS 3.3.1 The paving stones shall be installed in the approved pattern as noted or shown on drawings. Ensure porous pavers are free from foreign materials before installation. 3.3.2 Interlocking concrete porous paving stones shall be installed in the desired pattern. For maximum performance, joint spacing of 1/16 (1.5 mm) must be maintained. 3.3.3 Upon completion of work covered in this section the contractor shall clean up all work areas by removing all debris, surplus material and equipment from the site prior to occupancy. -P 5-
