Creating a Web Page in Microsoft Office You will create the classroom web page much like you create a regular Word document, using all the formatting tools. However, you will need to save the page in two steps - once as a Word document (.doc) and again as a web page (.html) Some things to remember: The completed web page will look a bit different on the web than it did when you created it as a Word document. You will have to experiment a bit to get the placement of objects the way you want. Use a standard font like Times, Helvetica, Arial, or Comic Sans. Not all computers have fancy fonts and the text will automatically go to one of those fonts anyway. Keep the font size relatively small - it always looks bigger on the web. (Use 12 to 16) Use a table if you plan to place an image next to text. Put the text in one cell and the image in the other. This helps to regulate how the page will look when on the web. When saved, the web page will create several folders and files. All of these files and folders must be saved inside your Sites folder in your home directory. Do not place all the files and folders inside another folder. Web Site Rules: Each page must have a header that includes the school name. The home page, or entry page, must be named index.html (not.htm) The home page must include - the revision date of the page - email address or email link to the teacher who created the page - a link back to the school home page Create web page in Word by J. To preview the page on the web, click on the Web Page Preview Icon. You may notice that the images moved to a different location than you expected. Try moving it or putting the image in a table. Preview each time until you get the results you want. Formatting Tools In Word, make certain your Formatting Palette is open. If not, click on the Formatting Palette button in the Toolbar. All the text size, fonts, color, and justification tools are in the Formatting Palette. Remember to highlight words before formatting them. Create a Table To place an image next to a paragraph of text, you should use a table. The table can contain only two cells, or many, depending upon the design of the web page. From the Table Menu, select Insert > Table. Select two columns and one row to make one image next to one paragraph. Click OK. Create web page in Word by J. Kilcourse 6/2004 page 2

Type in the name of the page you wish to link to. Make certain to include the.html part. Click OK. Make certain that each time you save the Word document, save as.doc Wait until you are almost finished to save to.html and test out the page. From the File Menu, select Save as Web Page. Save it with the same name as the.doc, but use.html as the file extension. (example: index.html ) A group of files and folders will be created that contain the HTML and the images for your page. Double click on the index.html icon to preview the page in the browser. To make changes in the page, you will have to open the index.doc page and make the changes there. When finished save again with Save as a Web Page and preview the page. When you wish to go back and edit the page, always open the.doc page or all you will see is the page in the browser and you will not be able to edit it. Save the page 2 times: As you design the page, save as a.doc and save often. This allows you to later come back and open the page to continue working or to edit the page. Once you are happy with the page, save it again as a web page. (From the File Menu, select Save as Web Page) This actually creates the HTML page that is seen on the Internet. If you don t first save as a.doc, then you will not be able to edit the page later. Create web page in Word by J. Kilcourse 6/2004 page 5
