MOBILE LABORATORY OF WATER LEAK DETECTION AquaLAB In most water-distribution systems and pipelines, a large percentage of the water is lost in transit from treatment plants to consumers. Factors that contribute to this loss are old and poorly constructed pipelines, inadequate corrosion protection, poorly maintained valves and mechanical damage. Our water leak detection test van is a cost-effective way to conserve water, save lost revenue, and control unnecessary costs. Early detection of leaks reduces the possibility of public health risks and the potential for major property damage. Utilizing state-of-the-art equipment the water leak detection test van is capable of locating and exposing the exact location of hidden underground water leakages. Further, our investigative procedures are non invasive/non destructive and can detect and identify the damage locations without digging or trenching. LABORATORY FEATURES: Determines the pipeline route of a water supply network; Checks up valves and gates for the presence of leakages; Measures the water flow in a section of the pipeline; Pinpoints the place of water leakages; Stores data for graphing, processing and later analysis.
A. ACCURATE PINPOINTING OF UNDERGROUND FLUID LEAKS Advanced system for the accurate pinpointing of underground fluid leaks, prior to excavation Eureka2. The system has been proven to perform world-wide and can be used effectively on all types of pipe not only metallic, but also plastic and asbestos cement. Benefits: Fast and simple, enabling rapid leak location Optimum correlation performance Palm-top size and weight Rugged construction for routine operations Fast-Track or Advanced operation. Eureka 2R can be used in two modes Fast- Track or Advanced. The Fast-Track mode can be used quickly and reliably, involving only three operations for basic leak pin-pointing. The Advanced mode incorporates features such as unwanted noise suppression, velocity calculation, filter adjustment, display zoom and saving results. The correlation display is shown directly as distance (unlike most correlators where a display of time-delay is used). This has the benefit, particularly in multiple pipe situations, of giving a displayed result directly proportional to distance on the ground. Features Automatic and manual filter selection Unwanted noise suppression Fast, automatic battery charging from mains or vehicle; minimizes equipment down-time Built-in language options Software upgradeable Convenient in-case battery charger

ACOUSTIC LEAK DETECTION SYSTEM Phocus 2 is an intelligent acoustic data logger system designed for widespread use in detecting and localizing leakage on water distribution systems. Large areas may be rapidly assessed. Phocus2 gives visual, on-site indication of leakage or can be used with sophisticated software to produce graphical and tabular results. Phocus2 advantages: Rapid, overnight, identification of leaks - without the need for staff night working Use for survey or permanent operation Large areas can be covered quickly Intelligence built into logger for instant, on-site, indication of leakage Advanced analysis PC software Operation Leak pre-location is carried out by installation of a number of Phocus2 loggers at available fittings such as hydrants or valves. The loggers record leak noise during the night, when background noise is likely to be lower. Noise amplitude will vary due to random effects, but there will always be a consistent minimum (the critical noise level) due to any constant noise for example, leakage.
Loggers which are situated closer to a leak will record a higher critical noise level. The leak can then be pinpointed (usually by using the leak noise correlation technique). The System The Phocus2 system consists of a number of acoustic noise loggers. A communications case is required to program and readback loggers. The case has the contact-less communications facility built into the lid. Loggers may be placed in any position and the PC software automatically identifies each logger. The case provides for communication for up to 15 loggers at the same time and the cases may be connected to build a system with any number of loggers. Visual indication provides instant on-site awareness of the leakage situation. Logger Features Specially optimized accelerometer with high sensitivity Large memory - stores up to one year of noise data Powered for life (5-10 years) Small size - only 90mm high Submersible (to IP68) Rapid, contact-less communications to multiple loggers Data Analysis The sophisticated PC software automatically identifies each logger and enables the simple programming and read-back of multiple loggers. The results are displayed as two or three dimensional graphs of the characteristic noise and provide easy to interpret analysis. Additionally, a table ranks logger position relative to the leak position.

ACOUSTIC LEAK LOCATION SYSTEM Mikron is a high performance, simple to use leak locator. The design is based upon an advanced sensor and incorporates low-noise processing electronics to give excellent acoustic performance over a wide frequency range. Mikron incorporates a Minimum Noise Level measurement system. Principle Mikron detects noise generated by leaks in water pipes. The leak noise travels through the water and pipe wall and can be detected by listening at valves or hydrants. Leak noise also propagates from the leak to the ground surface where it can be detected using the sensitive ground microphone.
Features Very high acoustic sensitivity Acoustic probe, ground microphone and combined system options Advanced ground microphone with wind-noise isolation Minimum Noise Level measurement Lightweight amplifier with clear digital display Simple to use Minimum Noise Level digital display To enable accurate leak pinpointing Mikron displays the Minimum Noise Level, i.e. the background noise level which will potentially include the leak noise, but without transient noises, such as road traffic. Mikron also displays the two previous Minimum Noise Level measurements such that the user can easily tell if they are moving toward or away from a leak. The current sound level, volume position and battery charge are also displayed. Advanced amplifier The small, lightweight amplifier unit can be held in one hand. The display is easy to read and includes the following range of filters for operation in different leak location conditions. Flexible performance In the ground microphone system the high performance sensor is suspended thus drastically reducing interference from wind or other sources of airborne noise. The acoustic probe system can be configured as an electronic listening stick or ground microphone and includes a tripod for use on hard ground, spike for use on soft ground and optional magnet. The systems are rugged and use military grade connectors for sensor and battery charging. Rechargeable batteries provide approximately 35 hours operation (without backlight).
F. LEAK SIZER SYSTEM Leak Sizer is an advanced instrument for leak location and for the determination of leak size probability. Prioritise repairs to reduce leakage losses Reduce repair costs High sensitivity to detect quiet leaks Minimum noise level display Multiple leak noise sound recording Leak noise spectrum display Methodology Once the leak position has been determined then the Leak Sizer operation commences. The process is as follows: Collect 30 seconds of acoustic data from the ground surface immediately above the estimated leak position Enter estimate of network pressure Optionally collect 30 seconds of acoustic data from pipe fitting close to the leak such as a valve or stop tap Results The algorithms within the Leak Sizer software then analyse this data to extract a range of key features which can be correlated probabilistically against leak size. The sizing process is divided into two categories; communication/services pipes (less than 50mm) and mains pipes (greater than 50mm). The leak size estimate probability is displayed in three categories for the smaller pipes and into two categories for the larger pipes. Research data Leak Sizer is the result of over two years research carried out in the South West Water company in the UK. This research included measurement of over 370 actual leaks. A wide variety of pipe materials and soil types were assessed. The light blue line on the graph shows average performance, ie. what should happen if leaks are repaired in random order. The yellow line shows the Leak Sizer performance and the green line the theoretical ideal performance.
Sensor characteristics High performance accelerometer Acoustic data digitised at accelerometer Bluetooth data transmission to PDA for data processing Battery life 40 hours (rechargeable) System components Advanced ground sensor with Bluetooth communications Large mass for constant acoustic coupling with ground surface (for leak sizing) Tripod attachment for surface listening (+ soft ground spike) PDA with rugged case + Leak Sizer software Connecting rods + handle High performance headphones The notebook provides an interface for data acquisition, data analysis and data storage for the mobile laboratory of water leak detection.
