Sicily Historical Outline of the Island Visiting Sicily means submerging in the colours, odours, and tastes of a fruitful and productive land of incomparable culture. Its cultural and environmental patrimony which, in addition to its coasts offers in its innermost areas a nature that is still unpolluted today, makes it an inestimable tourist destination. The first settlement which we learn about is the ancient people of the Sicani, probably not of Indo-European origin which, according to tradition, occupied a large part of the island. The little fragmentary historical information we have on the Sicani comes down to us come from the Greeks, who on beginning to settle in Sicily (8th century B.C.) found two different peoples, namely the Sicani to the West, and the Siculi in the Eastern part. There are thirteen dominations which governed in Sicily only in the last three millennia. On this land have successively governed and left their architectural and artistic imprints both Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans, Swabians, Angevins, Aragonese, Spanish, the House of Savoy, Austrians and Bourbons. Trinakia, as Sicily was defined by Homer on account of its triangular shape has always been defined as the island of the sun, thanks to its favourable climate and the fertility of its soil. The symbol that represents it is a Gorgon s head surrounded by three legs. The Greek mythological legends narrate that the Gorgon was Medusa, the most famous of three sisters and their queen, who, through the wish of Persephone, became the guardian of the Underworld. The reference to a Gorgon in the symbol is doubtlessly due to the biggest volcano in Europe, namely Etna, located on the eastern part of the island, which the Greek poet Pindar called the column of the sky on account of its grandeur, and which Dante quotes in the Divina Commedia as he wanted to refer to Sicily as the island of fire. Sicily is the most important demographic island reality of the Mediterranean. Today it is inhabited by more than 5 million people with Palermo as its capital. It is one of the most important tourist destinations in Italy, and in the 18th century it was the last stop on the Grand Tour, the journey which the young English aristocrats were wont to undertake in Europe to complete their education. The numerous dishes of traditional regional cuisine are linked with the many wines produced on the island and acknowledged on the Mount Olympus of the great nectars. Visiting Trinacria, as it is now called, means breathing an atmosphere where history, legend, art, culture, folklore and tradition combine with sea and sunshine. The countless sites deserving attention ranging throughout the entire island create a natural magnetic attraction which makes you keep coming back time and time again to discover what you have not yet seen and tasted.

The Sicilian Puppet In 2001 the works of the Puppet Dolls, the Sicilian theatre of marionettes, were included among the Oral and Non-material World Heritage of UNESCO. Thanks to the cuntastori (the story-tellers), the pupi (puppet dolls), which represent the characters of the Carolingian cycle, enact the stories of the Chanson de Roland, Orlando Furioso and Gerusalemme Liberata. The leading characters are the Knight Orlando, Rinaldo and Angelica. Palermo and Acireale where famous theatres are to be found, have witnessed the flourishing of this Art thanks to the numerous puppet maestros. The Volcanoes On account of its position, straddled between two important tectonic plates, the region and the surrounding islands are affected by intense volcanic activity. The most important volcanoes are Etna, Stromboli and Vulcano. They share the uniqueness of belonging to three different typologies: the first eruptions of basalt lavas alternated by periods of calm; continuous eruptions, and second fountains of lava whose characteristics have been taken as a typological model by scientists in the sector, who have coined the term Strombolian Type in order to designate the like activities of terrestrial volcanoes. Finally the third and the explosive type, or Plinian type characterized by the long periods of apparent calm as well as violent eruptions. The eruption activity which throughout the nineteenth century in the area of the Canal of Sicily now called the Graham Bank, brought about the birth of the ephemeral Isola Ferdinandea, a vast rocky platform situated about 6 metres from the surface of the sea between Sciacca and the Island of Pantelleria. The Minor Islands Sicily also includes various smaller islands, such as the archipelago of the Aeolians and Ustica to the North, and that of the Egadi Islands to the West, as well as the islands of Pantelleria, Lampedusa, and Linosa to the South. The archipelago of which the Island of Malta also forms part is geographically (but not politically) an integral part of Sicily. Malta, moreover, was united politically to Sicily until 1798, when it was occupied (for about two years) by Napoleon Bonaparte. The Pelagian Islands, in contrast, are geographically linked to Tunisia, but politically form part of the Province of Agrigento. 41 The sicilian Puppets The volcano Etna The island

Sicilian Cuisine 42 The Sicilian Cuisine forms part of a complex yet articulated gastronomic culture, which contains contributions made from all the cultures that have settled in Sicily during the last three millennia, from the feeding habits of Magna Graecia to the delicacies of the great noble cuisines, and passing from the Arab sweets to the entrails prepared in the Jewish way. The list of the typical products is very long. Every province (and, in many cases, every commune) has a speciality of its own and the names of the same foodstuffs vary from area to area. The granita siciliana is universally known a creamy iced compound of varying tastes, a product valued on the eastern coast, between the provinces of Catania and Messina. Very tasty are another two beverages with a milky appearance: barley water (sweet) and almond milk (bitter-sweet). Cane sugar, introduced into Sicily by the Arabs between the 9th and the 11th centuries A.D. passed into the Norman convents where the continued Arab tradition of mixing it with sweet almond, grounded and refined with the mortar, and then cooked with the addition of orange cinnamon water, Sicilian marzipan (sponge-cake) was born, which still today adorns the shop windows of the cake and pastry shops with its most varied shapes and colours. Among the hundreds of typical buns and cakes of the region the cannoli reign supreme, short-crust tubular pastry with sweet ricotta cream filling; the cassata, a cake still on the basis of ricotta cheese with candied fruit, as well as the incomparable ice-creams. Among the savoury products, excels the famous tavola calda- hot dishes, a rich assortment of flat cakes, pizzas and flaky pastry filled with the tastiest foods, scacci, hard grain flat cakes with parsley filling, or cauliflower or tomatoes, real and proper savoury pies, arancini (or arancine ) - breadcrumbed fried or baked rice croquette enriched with every type of flavour, the cutting edge of the category. Typical of the Palermo region are the panelle (fritters with chick-pea pastry), crocchè (potato croquette) and pani cà'e meusa (bread with millet). These are choice dishes on the basis of aubergines, like the caponata, the parmigiana and the pasta alla norma. In the Island s gastronomy a staple foodstuff is obviously fish. Famous is the preparation of stock fish in the Messina fashion. Typical of the Trapani region is, in contrast, the fish cuscus to be tried more especially at Trapani, Favignana and San Vito Lo Capo. Served in the Catanese area are the pasta che rizzi which is a very refined starter dish prepared with sea urchins while still alive, the polpette di neonato, are small octopus fried or baked, of tiny blue fish. Noteworthy are all the dishes on the basis of spada the excellent swordfish with which the Sicilian coasts abound. In fact a million words fail to do describe adequately the tastes of the extraordinary dishes that are prepared in this land: in a word they should simply be tasted. 1 2 3 4 5 6 1.Fish and shrimps 2.Cous Cous 3.Pasta with Norma 4.Fruits variety 5.Sweet Cannoli siciliani 6.Sweet Cassata siciliana
