Basic Broker Preparation Course -- (working under supervision) Regulations... Upon completion of this course, the student will be qualified to be an "other than life" Insurance Broker as defined in the Registered Insurance Brokers Act, RSO1990 and its regulations. In order for a student to obtain a RIBO registration, it is necessary that employment be obtained with an unrestricted broker within 12 months of the date of passing the examination. The student will receive a Level 1"restricted registration. A restricted registration will not permit the student to establish his/her own brokerage. After 2 years working as a restricted broker and successful completion of the Advanced Broker respective examinations, this restriction can be removed. A restricted registration permits a broker to effect any type of Property and Casualty coverages but the broker is required to have sufficient knowledge of the coverages in order to handle the client s needs in a professional and competent manner. Successful candidates may gain employment through any Registered Brokerage in the Province of Ontario. If a candidate does not become employed and registered within 12 months, the student will be required to re-write a RIBO examination. The Basic Broker Preparation Course satisfies the Basic Broker Skill Requirements as established by the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario (RIBO). It is a lengthy and fast moving course that requires attendance at all lectures. It is recommended that a student spend a minimum of 3-4 hours in private study between each lecture. Emphasis is placed on Insurance Principles and personal automobile and property coverages. Frequent Term Quizzes given throughout the course allow the student a measure of his/her accomplishments to date. A review exam will be supplied covering all course subject matter in preparation for the RIBO exam.these quizzes and review exam do not contribute to the RIBO exam or marks. The RIBO exam will be written in class the Saturday immediately after the completion of the course. The Basic Broker Preparation Course at the Insurance Institute Hamilton/Niagara Chapter... The Insurance Institute is located at 1439 Upper Ottawa St, #4 & 5, Hamilton. The office is conveniently located off the Lincoln Alexander Parkway and provides complimentary parking. The Insurance Institute is an educational arm of the Insurance industry and is pleased to partner with the Broker Association in providing the learning facility for this course.
About the Exam... The examination is set by the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario. The student is required to submit an examination application and pay to RIBO the examination fee of $180.00 in addition to the course enrolment fee. This examination fee, application, two passport size photos and a Criminal Record Verification are due on the second day of class for the 2-week course. The examination of 3-hour duration contains 90 multiple choice questions and 10 short answer questions. Fifty percent (50%) of the exam will be "open book" and the candidate will be supplied with the Ontario Automobile Policy and the Habitational Policies for reference purposes. The student must obtain a mark of 75% or higher to be successful. Re-writes are limited to 3 examination attempts in a 12-month period. The re-write fee is $90.00. About the Instructors... Julie F. Ryan, Dipl., C.A.I.B., FCIP. Julie started her career as an Insurance Broker with Dalton Insurance Brokers in Hamilton (now Dalton-Timmis) and worked as a licensed insurance broker for over 15 years. She left the brokerage in order to grow her family but was approached in 1985 to teach Insurance Institute courses at Mohawk College in their continuing education program. She was offered a part time teaching position in the 2 year Insurance Diploma Day Program in 1987 and 3 years later, she accepted a full time faculty position in the Insurance program at the College. In 2014, after 26 years as a professor and co-ordinator of this program, Julie decided to take an early retirement. In 2011, the Insurance Institute awarded Julie with the David McLauchlan award in recognition of her dedication and contribution to the Insurance industry. Julie is a member of the Insurance Brokers Association of Hamilton, past member of the Insurance Advisory Committee of Mohawk College and a long time member of the Insurance Institute CIP Society. Violet H. Whitehouse, C.A.I.B., CIP. Violet has worked in the insurance industry for over 36 years and has just retired from her position as a Personal Lines Manager at Ten Star Insurance Brokers in Waterdown. Violet has been involved in education with the Insurance Institute of Canada for over 25 years. She began teaching evening courses at Sheridan College and then the Insurance Institute Hamilton/Niagara Chapter where she continues to teach. Violet was awarded the David McLauchlan Memorial Award in honour of her outstanding contribution to the Insurance Community. Also, in 2004 and 2014, Violet was the recipient of the Clannad Award. This award is presented by the Insurance Institute - Hamilton/Niagara Chapter to an outstanding facilitator (as nominated by their students). Violet is an executive member of the Insurance Brokers Association of Hamilton and sits on the Board of the Insurance Institute Hamilton/Niagara Chapter.
Course Dates and Times... 2 week courses Commencement Date -- Monday, February 1st, 2016 Exam Date Saturday, February 13 th, 2016 Commencement Date -- Monday, June 6 th, 2016 Exam Date Saturday, June 18 th, 2016 Commencement Date -- Monday, Sept. 19 th, 2016 Exam Date Saturday, Oct. 1 st, 2016 Course dates -- Monday to Friday Course times -- 9:00 am to 12 noon 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm Exam 9:00 am to 12 noon (Saturday of the second week) Location -- Insurance Institute Hamilton/Niagara Chapter 1439 Upper Ottawa Street, Units 4 & 5 Hamilton, Ontario Course Fee -- $635.00 - all applicants $25.00 additional charge for non members of IBAO Registration deadline: 1 week prior to the start of class (late fee may apply) Note: Late registrations will be subject to a late enrolment fee. The fee includes tuition, text material and all handouts. In addition the student will be responsible for the RIBO exam fee of $180.00 ($90.00 for re-write) which is to be submitted on the second day of class along with a completed exam application, two signed passport size photos and the Criminal Record Verification form. Exam application will be distributed on the first day of classes. NOTE: If you already have a current copy of the textbook, reduce your fee by $100.00.
The Course fee is payable to the Insurance Brokers Association of Hamilton. The examination fee is payable to the Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario..
