Training and Development Calendar Introduction Welcome to the April 2010 to March 2011 edition of the Youth Service Training Calendar. As in previous years there are details of a number of training and staff development opportunities to bring to your attention. There have been some new developments this year particularly in relation to the induction process for part time staff and the routes to Local Qualification. We are now pleased to be able to offer the VRQ Level 3 to all part time youth workers. Please see the attached document, Local Qualification Routes for full details. Please take time to read through the calendar in detail. Continuous professional development is essential for us all to keep up to date with the ever changing world of youth work. If there are any aspects / elements of training you require that are not in the calendar please let your Line Manager and the Staff Development Team know the details. The details of this calendar were accurate and up to date at the point of going on the website. As new opportunities become available we will send out updates by email. We trust you will be able to take advantage of the professional development opportunities highlighted in the calendar. We look forward to seeing you as you continue your professional development during your youth work career. Application forms for training events are located throughout the Training Calendar. You are encouraged to use the on-line booking systems via the Youth Service Website. The booking forms and the full Training Calendar can be accessed by visiting www.leics.gov.uk, click on 4 Youth, then Youth Service & Staff Information. Finally the training calendar can be found in the Staff Development & Training link. Stuart Cross Youth Work Officer (Staff Development & Curriculum) Louise Himan Staff Development Co-ordinator 3 of 24

Booking System Due to the high demand for places on training and development courses a rigorous booking system is in place. All applications for places MUST be countersigned by the applicants Line Manager to show that the course content has been considered and is appropriate to the development needs of the individual / team concerned. If booking through email this needs to come through the Line Manager as receipt of an email from them will equate to your Line Manager approving your application. The electronic booking forms have a tick box which, if ticked, means you have gained approval for attend a course. On receipt of an application for a place the training team will consider the applicants full development profile as given on the training pages of the Youth Service Staff Database. You will receive confirmation that your application has been received. Places will then be offered and confirmed four weeks before the course takes place. The training team reserves the right to withdraw offers of places should further applicants training and development profiles require it. Where there are funding / cost implications for courses (this excludes all curriculum days) a request for funding (YST1/YST2) must be received by the Staff Development Team and approved before booking places on the course(s). Non Attendance at Training Events It is very important that we use the limited funding available efficiently and effectively. Historically there has been a pattern of staff booking places on curriculum days and then not turning up without giving any apologies in advance. This has meant that there have been spaces on training days while some people have been previously turned away because the course was full. We have a system in place to ensure managers are informed of nonattendance and expected to follow this up with their teams. Non-attendance can put further offers of training and development at risk. 4 of 24

Staff Development Procedures The process detailed on page 6 builds from the point of appointment, through the induction procedures for part time staff to the full VRQ Level 3 in Youth Work. All new appointees to our part time workforce must now satisfactorily complete the 6 month induction programme in parallel with their 6 month probationary period. Within this there are three compulsory training events for Volunteers & Assistant Youth Workers and four for Responsible Leaders / Detached Youth Workers for which you are paid to attend at the training rate of 7.50 per hour. Volunteers can receive out of pocket expenses such as travel for attending the courses but cannot be paid to attend. 1. Child Protection (All Volunteers & Part Time Staff) 2. Role of the Youth Worker (All Volunteers & Part Time Staff) 3. Group Work (All Volunteers & Part Time Staff) 4. Advanced Responsible Leader Training (Responsible/Detached Only) In order for volunteers and part time youth workers to further their professional development they are expected to regularly attend curriculum days. Remember there is a contractual requirement for all paid staff to have completed their local qualification within 2 years of taking up a post or by the next possible opportunity. For all Youth Workers completion of induction and probation along with regular attendance at curriculum days will lead to the VRQ Level 3 in Youth Work. When complete the Youth Worker will reach Locally Qualified status and they will receive an upgrade on the salary scale according to the post(s) they hold. Responsible Leaders / Detached Youth Workers must attend the Advanced Responsible Leader (ARL) Training. This could result in an additional number of hours being added to their contract (depending on specifics of contract) to reflect the time needed for curriculum planning and evaluating their work and meeting the developing quality assurance (QA) requirements. Equality Weekend All volunteers and paid staff must attend the mandatory Equality Weekend as part of their core training reflecting the Youth Service s commitment to equality and diversity. The weekend is programmed to run twice in the year to meet the demand for places anticipated. 5 of 24

The units for this qualification are derived from the National Occupational standards listed below: B1 Enable young people to explore and develop their values and self respect B3 Enable young people to work effectively in groups B4 Enable young people to use their learning to enhance their future development C1 Work with young people to design and develop sessions C3 Review progress and evaluate opportunities with young people D3 Manage your work and create effective work relationships E1 Investigate needs and provisions for young people and promote youth work opportunities E2 Identify relationships with other organisations and individuals This award is designed for Youth Support Workers who are required to take responsibility for areas of their work including specialist tasks associated with, for example, Street Based Youth Work, Information, Advice & Guidance and Project Work at a level more demanding than at Level 2. All 8 units of the award are required for successful completion. Role of the Youth Worker and Group Work Training These two compulsory elements of the 6 month induction programme give newly appointed staff the chance to explore the core elements of a youth workers role and a basic introduction to working with groups. The sessions last 3 hours and consider the questions; What is youth work? and What is a youth worker? How do you use group work with young people? by using activities and games that can be adapted for working with young people. Group work is an essential skill for working with young people. This session will look at a range of practical methods and theories that will allow you to work effectively with young people in group situations. The group work session is a highly participative one giving the chance to try out a variety of group work activities first hand before putting them into practice with young people. Workers are paid at the training rate to attend these courses. The sessions are offered as individual evening sessions (18.30pm to 21.30pm) and a full Saturday (10.00am-16.00pm) combining both elements of the Role of a Youth Worker and Group Work 13 of 24
