2 ABOUT LIFELINE/CHILDLINE WESTERN CAPE LifeLine was founded in 1963 in Sydney, Australia, by the late Reverend Dr Sir Alan Walker, after he received a call by a distressed man, who three days later took his own life. Determined not to let loneliness, isolation or anxiety be the cause of other deaths, Sir Alan launched a crisis line, which operated out of the Methodist Central Mission in Sydney. Just a few days after it was first established, LifeLine received over one hundred calls for help. LifeLine South Africa is part of an international network. The organisation also belongs to the Volunteer Emotional Support Helplines (VESH) network, along with service providers from 61 countries around the world. LifeLine South Africa has 19 affiliated community centres spread throughout South Africa. LifeLine South Africa has just celebrated its 47 th anniversary, having begun its work in Cape Town in What started out as a crisis telephone counselling service only has now grown into a service that includes telephone and face-to-face counselling, therapeutic work with children who have been sexually abused, HIV & AIDS programmes, youth development programmes, trauma debriefing, training courses and bereavement counselling. Today LifeLine/Childline Western Cape receives about 3500 to 4000 calls per month, and goes some way to serve the emotional needs of communities in Cape Town, Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain, Parow and Wynberg. LifeLine/Childline s lay counsellors are trained volunteers from all walks of life. They operate the crisis telephone lines 365 days of the year, as well as offering face-toface counselling at our centres during office hours. The service is anonymous, confidential, free of charge and available to anyone with access to a telephone or to any one of our centres. In 1995, LifeLine Western Cape expanded its operations to include Childline. Full time social workers provide long-term therapeutic work with children who have been sexually abused or raped, and offer education and prevention programmes, bereavement counselling and trauma debriefing. LifeLine/Childline s focus on social issues has ensured that it receives support for its work from both government and the private sector. Our fundraisers focus their efforts on building partnerships with corporate companies, trusts and foundations and government departments. Income is also generated through the many training courses offered. Three Personal Growth courses, followed by Counselling Skills are offered annually in Cape Town. LifeLine/Childline has been placed on the Micro-Provider listing by the HWSETA (Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority) as a provider of training in the areas of HIV/AIDS awareness, and Counselling. For more information call our office at or [email protected]

Workshops and training courses have been designed specifically to meet the needs of business, community, welfare and religious organisations, as well as local government structures. Educational institutions are catered for, from primary to tertiary levels. In 1998 a Youth Programme was created to address the needs of youth in schools and in the community. Training of peer counsellors has taken place in a number of schools in Cape Town and in the Boland region. LifeLine/Childline specialises in communication and counselling skills training, and has also offered training in team building, post traumatic stress management, assertiveness development, motivational and change management, self esteem and awareness and general life skills. There has been a growing request for training regarding HIV/AIDS Awareness, Peer Education and Counselling. The increase in violence in our society has led to an enormous demand for workshops on child abuse and family violence. Parenting skills and the needs of women and children continue to receive increasing attention. LifeLine/Childline is involved in HIV and AIDS training in the workplace and community. This includes awareness programmes, counselling and peer educator programmes.
