Part II 1. Abstract The world energy demand continues to grow at an increasing rate, especially in the developing countries, such as China. However, available fossil fuel resources are decreasing. It is predicted that the world oil production will reach the peak in a few years. The energy crisis problems will escalate seriously then. Moreover, burning fossil fuels is the main source of greenhouse gas and air pollutants, which are detrimental to the environment. Therefore, our present fossil fuel based energy supply is indeed not sustainable. Recently, research and development on clean energy and renewable energy are very active. New government policies, commitments and regulations are set to promote green energy. The energy industry is entering a new era of sustainability. This course is designed to enable students to develop a broader perspective and critical understanding of the current energy issues. The comprehensive course contents consist of fossil fuel based energy, energy efficiency, clean energy, renewable energy, as well as policies. The major learning activities include lectures, tutorials, seminars, live demonstration experiments, project and field trip. 2. Course Aims This course is designed to enable students to develop a broader perspective and critical understanding of the current energy issues. The students after taking the course will have the basic comprehension of the science and technologies related to energy supply and utilization. The students will understand the environmental impacts and political conflicts arising from the world's heavy reliance on fossil fuel based energy supply. The students will also be able to apply the knowledge learned to assess innovative alternative energy technologies and policies in different contexts, such as economy, environment, social and political matters. 3. Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: No. CILOs Weighting (if applicable) 20% 1. explain how power generators and power plants work; 2. assess environmental impacts arising from 20% production of energy; 3. practise demand side management; 20% 4. appreciate clean, renewable and innovative 20% energy technologies; 5. describe the significance of sustainability 20% (economic, environmental & social factors) in the power industry. Please explain the alignment of CILOs to the GE Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs) under Part A of the Annex to this Form. 2

4. Teaching and Learning Activities (TLAs) (designed to facilitate students achievement of the CILOs - Some TLAs may address more than one CILO.) Please be sure to consider how the TLAs align with the desired characteristics of GE courses (c.f. explanatory note 10). TLA CILO No. Hours/week (if applicable) Lectures: Introduction to science, engineering 1-5 2 principles, practical systems and strategies of energy Tutorials: Practice on problem solving; questions and 1-5 1 answers; group discussion. Demonstration experiments: Live demonstration 1,3,4 NA experiments to illustrate how energy is converted into various useful forms and the energy conversion efficiency. Seminars: Knowledge and experience sharing by 1,4,5 NA experts in the energy industry. Fieldwork: Visit to power plant, renewable energy 1,5 NA plant, or other energy related facilities. Reading; Self-study; Project: Data and information collection; problem solving, critical and creative thinking, report writing. 1-5 5 5. Assessment Tasks/Activities (designed to assess how well the students achieve the CILOs Some assessment tasks/activities may address more than one CILO.) Type of Assessment Tasks/Activities CILO No. Weighting (if applicable) Participation: Students involvement throughout the 1-5 10% course Quizzes: Short written questions to assess students 1-5 20% knowledge and understanding in energy Assignments: Individual homework assignments on 1-5 30% problem solving and analysis in energy sciences, policy and supply strategies. Project: Group exercise where students work 1-5 40% together to comprehensively analyze an innovative and novel energy technology Remarks Examination duration: N/A Percentage of coursework, examination, etc.: 100% by coursework 3

6. Grading of Student Achievement: Refer to Grading of Courses in the Academic Regulations Letter Grade A+ A A- B+ B B- C+ C C- Part III Grade Definitions Excellent Good Adequate Achievement Strong evidence of knowledge and skills in the interpretation, analysis and problem-solving in energy Some evidence of knowledge and skills in the interpretation, analysis and problem-solving in energy Student has some understanding of the energy subject, and shows some analytical capability; evidence of interest in the material. D Marginal Sufficient familiarity with matters in the energy field to enable the student to progress without repeating the course. F Failure Little evidence of familiarity with the field of energy.
