See New for OpenNMS v1.8.10 on page 3. (New) An upgrade utility that allows you to upgrade Avid System Monitor v1.1.1 installations to v1.2.1. The upgrade utility allows you to upgrade to Avid System Monitor v1.2.1 while maintaining many of the customizations that you have made such as naming nodes and adjusting threshold values. For instructions on using the upgrade utility and for information on backing up and restoring the PostgreSQL database, see the Avid System Monitor Setup and User s Guide. Full Discovery of services (as described in the Avid System Monitor Setup and User s Guide) is supported for the following systems: - (New) Avid AirSpeed Multi Stream v1.8.1 and higher - Avid Interplay Media Indexer - Avid Interplay Capture - System running the Avid Service Framework Lookup Service - Network switches All of the above systems, except for network switches, support HTTP monitoring via the Avid Monitoring Gateway service. OpenNMS uses SNMP monitoring for network switches. For additional information see the Overview chapter of the Avid System Monitor Setup and User s Guide. 2
New for OpenNMS v1.8.10 Custom SNMP agents and the discovery of specific services are supported on the following systems: - Interplay Engine and Interplay Archive Engine - Interplay Stream Server - ISIS 7000 and ISIS 5000 System Directors Besides the systems listed above, other servers can be monitored as an up/down status. Specific OpenNMS provisioning group templates are provided for this configuration. For more information about these features, see the Avid System Monitor Setup and User s Guide. New for OpenNMS v1.8.10 Avid System Monitor v1.2.1 supports OpenNMS v1.8.10. OpenNMS v1.8.10 has the following new features: The process for creating provisioning groups is different starting at v1.8.10. New for OpenNMS v1.8.10 in the Avid System Monitor Setup and User s Guide. The process for creating reports and graphs is also different. See Working with Resource Graphs and Creating Reports in the Avid System Monitor Setup and User s Guide. Maps are improved although they still have limitations. See Working with Maps in the Avid System Monitor Setup and User s Guide. Also see the Limitations section in this ReadMe. 3

Upgrading Avid System Monitor Minimum System Requirements for Avid System Monitor Server The following table lists the basic requirements for the server that runs the OpenNMS application. Category Operating System Processor Memory Description Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 R2. Windows XP is not recommended because it has a limit on the number of TCP connections that can be used. A 2 GHz processor or better. Avid System Monitor can also take advantage of multiple processors. A minimum of 2 GB of RAM but additional memory is recommended. When using Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit, at least 4 GB of RAM is required. n On a 64-bit system, install the 32-bit version of OpenNMS, Java, and PostgreSQL The 64-bit version of OpenNMS has not been qualified with Avid System Monitor. Upgrading Avid System Monitor There is an upgrade utility that allows you to upgrade your system from OpenNMS v1.1.1. The 580 upgrade tool upgrades any of the following builds to 580: v1.1.1.440 (official v1.1.1 release) v1.1.1.445 v1.2.0.525 (limited v1.2.0 release) v1.2.1.575 (v1.2.1 Beta release) See the Avid System Monitor Setup and User s Guide for details on using the Upgrade tool. Installing the Software (New Installations) Avid System Monitor consists of a number of different applications that are installed and configured on systems in your environment. You install the applications from the Avid System Monitor installer. The installer is available as a download. n To install Interplay Avid System Monitor software: t Follow the instructions in the Avid System Monitor Setup and User s Guide. The software should only be installed by qualified Avid personnel. 5
Fixed in OpenNMS v1.8.10 The following problems are fixed in OpenNMS v1.8.10: Bug Number: UDevC0013723. OpenNMS allows you to rename monitored nodes (systems you are monitoring) in the OpenNMS interface. However, if you name as many as 10 nodes during a browser session, it can slow down the OpenNMS interface and cause it to hang. The web browser will also hang. This has been fixed. Bug Number: OpenNMS Bug 3246. If you edit an OpenNMS threshold that contains a large value, you must re-enter the value during the edit session. For example, OpenNMS converts 5,000,000 to 5.0E6. If you edit that threshold a second time and don t reenter the value, OpenNMS saves it as 5.06. This has been fixed. Documentation Updates The following are important documentation updates: The Avid System Monitor Setup and User s guide describes how to perform an upgrade from an earlier version of Avid System Monitor to version v1.2.1. Before performing the upgrade, stop the Avid System Monitor service. This ensures that there are no open.xml files during the upgrade, For ISIS 7000 v2.4 and greater, the ISIS SNMP agent is located on the ISIS installation kit. Do not use the installer on the Avid System Monitor installer. Limitations If you encounter performance problems using Internet Explorer, make sure you are using the latest IE version. Also try using the latest version of Mozilla Firefox. Some performance improvements have been noted as well as improvements using maps as described below. OpenNMS maps have the following limitations: When creating and modifying maps, testing has shown that Mozilla Firefox works better than Internet Explorer. Use the latest version of Firefox for best results. Users can view maps with Internet Explorer but creating and modifying them in Firefox is recommended. Some maps created in Firefox cannot be viewed in Internet Explorer and display the following Java script runtime error: Object doesn t support this property or method. 6
Limitations The Node > Add Category and Node > Add Label commands do not work as expected. Adding nodes one at a time is more reliable. Rename and save a new map before you begin adding nodes. When you configure a node, if you encounter problems seeing the expected services and resource graphs. check the following: For the OpenNMS server and for monitored nodes, disable any unused NICS and make sure that the active NICs are at the top of the binding order. Make sure that forward and backward DNS lookup is working for any nodes that are not reporting the correct services or graphs. For systems running the Avid Service Framework, you can use the System Check feature in the Workgroup Properties tool. Bug Number: none. There is a known problem with configuring nodes with Provisioning Groups. Occasionally importing the provisioning group file (in the OpenNMS user interface) does not add the nodes to the OpenNMS database. Workaround: If none of the nodes in the group were added, you can delete the existing provisioning group file and replace it with a default template from the installers folder. The template files are in the \etc\imports directory and are named after the provisioning group. For example, the ISIS-SD template is \etc\imports\isis-sd.html. Delete the edited template file in the Program Files\OpenNMS\etc\imports directory. For example, delete ISIS-SD.html. The entry will be automatically removed from the OpenNMS Admin/Provisioning Groups window. Copy the corresponding template file from the \opennms_config\etc\imports folder on the Avid System Monitor Installer and paste it into the Program Files\OpenNMS\etc\imports folder. In OpenNMS, select Admin > Manage Provisioning Groups. The template file should now be displayed in the Admin/Provisioning Groups window. Edit the provisioning group as usual and Synchronize the file after editing. For additional information, see the Avid System Monitor Setup and User s Guide. 7
