One that will allow you to work in the great outdoors, help protect and wisely manage our renewable natural resources, and really make a difference in the world? Forests are one of the world s most important resources. They cleanse the air, contribute to water quality, protect the soil, provide wildlife habitat, offer a wide variety of recreational opportunities, and produce renewable raw materials for energy, shelter, and paper products. Louisiana Tech s School of Forestry offers several degree programs that will help you realize your full potential to meet society s ever increasing need for commodities, services, and a healthy environment, all of which comes from our forest ecosystems. A degree in Forest Management might be for you if you have an interest in managing forests to provide the amenities and products that are essential to life. A Message From the Louisiana State Chairman On behalf of the 2007 Executive Committee of the Louisiana Society of American Foresters (LASAF), I am pleased to present our effort to publish a list of professional foresters living in Louisiana. LASAF last published a directory of all LASAF members in 1984. For the purposes of this directory, professional foresters are defined as those people who successfully graduated with at least a four year degree in forestry from a college or university having a specialized curriculum in forestry. We decided to list all graduate foresters in this directory who submitted information to us, as opposed to limiting the directory to Louisiana members. We made repeated efforts to contact foresters known to us, but not did include information from unresponsive foresters or those who were somehow missed. We apologize to those foresters we missed. If you qualify for inclusion in this directory but do not appear in it, please contact us so that we can include you in future updates. We plan to distribute this directory to all of those foresters included in the directory as well as to various agencies where landowners go to seek professional forestry assistance. We also plan to publish the directory on our website: http://lasaf.homestead.com We hope you find this directory useful for contacting forestry professionals in Louisiana. Sincerely, Steven K. Templin, A.C.F., C.F., R.F. 2007 President, Louisiana 2

A Message From the Executive Director It s been twenty years or so since a directory of foresters was published in Louisiana. There are several issues that encouraged the SAF to invest time and money in this task. Urban areas are merging into forest areas as many people have chosen to buy acreage and build homes in the country. This places new demands on forest management, especially on fire protection and forest harvesting and regeneration. Like any construction job, forest management activities are not pretty. Building a new forest is aesthetically costly, whether nature is the force behind the change as with fire and hurricanes or if it is as a result of active forest management. Forest land owners need the specialized skills of foresters to protect and restore forests whether they have come to the forest from cities or grew up there. There have also been changes in the forest industry that have made it more difficult to locate foresters. Industrial foresters were once active as extension foresters, helping landowners with management of private lands in hopes that this would increase the quality and quantity of wood available to the industry. In the past few years many of these companies have sold their lands to management organizations that do not have all the same goals as the industry once had. As a result foresters are managing more acres that have many different uses. Lands are being sold for real estate development, others are in long term recreational and hunting leases and some are still managed for wood products but foresters are not as available as they once were for landowner assistance. This directory will help forest landowners find a forester with the skills for which they are looking. Foresters have a great variety of skills, from knowledge of the best varieties to plant, how to control exotic and invasive species, or how to protect endangered species these skills are displayed in this publication. I hope the information we are making available will be used to improve the forests and lives of the people of Louisiana. Regards, Michael T. Goergen 3

SAF Code of Ethics Preamble Service to society is the cornerstone of any profession. The profession of forestry serves society by fostering stewardship of the world's forests. Because forests provide valuable resources and perform critical ecological functions, they are vital to the well being of both society and the biosphere. Members of the have a deep and enduring love for the land, and are inspired by the profession's historic traditions, such as Gifford Pinchot's utilitarianism and Aldo Leopold's ecological conscience. In their various roles as practitioners, teachers, researchers, advisers, and administrators, foresters seek to sustain and protect a variety of forest uses and attributes, such as aesthetic values, air and water quality, biodiversity, recreation, timber production, and wildlife habitat. The purpose of this Code of Ethics is to protect and serve society by inspiring, guiding, and governing members in the conduct of their professional lives. Compliance with the code demonstrates members' respect for the land and their commitment to the long term management of ecosystems, and ensures just and honorable professional and human relationships, mutual confidence and respect, and competent service to society. On joining the, members assume a special responsibility to the profession and to society by promising to uphold and abide by the following: Principles and Pledges 1. Foresters have a responsibility to manage land for both current and future generations. We pledge to practice and advocate management that will maintain the long term capacity of the land to provide the variety of materials, uses, and values desired by landowners and society. 2. Society must respect forest landowners' rights and correspondingly, landowners have a land stewardship responsibility to society. We pledge to practice and advocate forest management in accordance with landowner objectives and professional standards, and to advise landowners of the consequences of deviating from such standards. 3. Sound science is the foundation of the forestry profession. We pledge to strive for continuous improvement of our methods and our personal knowledge and skills; to perform only those services for which we are qualified; and in the biological, physical, and social sciences to use the most appropriate data, methods, and technology. 4. Public policy related to forests must be based on both scientific principles and societal values. We pledge to use our knowledge and skills to help formulate sound forest policies and laws; to challenge and correct untrue statements about forestry; and to foster dialogue among foresters, other professionals, landowners, and the public regarding forest policies. 5. Honest and open communication, coupled with respect for information given in confidence, is essential to good service. We pledge to always present, to the best of our ability, accurate and complete information; to indicate on whose behalf any public statements are made; to fully disclose and resolve any existing or potential conflicts of interest; and to keep proprietary information confidential unless the appropriate person authorizes its disclosure. 6. Professional and civic behavior must be based on honesty, fairness, good will, and respect for the law. We pledge to conduct ourselves in a civil and dignified manner; to respect the needs, contributions, and viewpoints of others; and to give due credit to others for their methods, ideas, or assistance. The ' Bylaws specify processes through which a member's violation of the code may lead to reprimand, censure, expulsion from the Society, or other disciplinary action. Any two persons, whether or not SAF members, may charge a member with violation of the code. Such a charge must be made in writing to the SAF President and must refer to the specific Pledges alleged to have been violated. 7
