FOREST MANAGEMENT IS THE KEY 1
2 Florida Forests Forests cover more than 16.1 million acres of Florida. More than 300,000 private landowners own over 60% of Florida's forest lands. Forestry provides a $16.7 billion annual economic impact for Florida s economy. Eighty-nine thousand Florida jobs depend upon forestry. 61% of Florida s Timberland area is owned by Private Landowners. We depend upon for the vast majority of forest products and renewable energy production. Pine Tree Planting in Florida Has Declined Since the 1980 s 2

5 Forest Stewardship Program Thru FFY Prepared 2,791 plans covering 826,567 acres Certified 483 properties covering 231,613 acres accomplishments: 152 new plans on 64,041 acres. 77 new Certified properties covering 44,066 acres. Funding from the USFS: 2007 = $600, = $492, = $387,818 Environmental Quality Incentives Program FFY 2009 Working with NRCS to write forest practice plans for landowners working to accomplish forest conservation practices $750,000 to Florida landowners to install forest conservation practices Conservation Reserve Program The Farm Services Agency makes annual rental payments and provides cost-share assistance for the participant's costs to establish long-term conservation practices on eligible farmland. Participants enroll in CRP contracts for 10 to 15 years. CRP protects millions of acres of American topsoil and improves groundwater, lakes, rivers, ponds, and streams; and contributes to increased wildlife populations. DOF provides technical assistance for forestry practices 2
6 Biomass Crop Assistance Program BCAP provides financial assistance to producers that deliver eligible biomass material to designated biomass conversion facilities for use in energy creation. Initial assistance will be for the Collection, Harvest, Storage and Transportation (CHST) associated with the delivery of eligible ibl materials. Biomass planting projects will follow DOF will cooperate with Farm Services Agency (FSA) to write forest biomass practice plans for landowners working to supply energy biomass demands Emergency Forest Restoration Program Update of the Emergency Conservation Program Authorizes a program to private non-industrial forest landowners to carry out emergency measures es to restore e the land after the land is damaged by a natural disaster Tree cover must have been on the land immediately before the natural disaster Cost share may not exceed 75 percent of the cost of the emergency restoration measures DOF provides technical assistance Southern Pine Beetle Prevention Program Incentive Payments to Reduce the Threat of Southern Pine Beetle: Longleaf Pine Plantings First Pulpwood Thinning Pre-Commercial Thinning Prescribed Burning Mechanical Brush Treatments Funding provided by the USDA Forest Service 3
7 Longleaf Pine Ecosystem Restoration Incentive Program Incentive Payments to Complete Longleaf Pine Restoration: Longleaf Plantings Native Understory Establishment Prescribed Burning Invasive Exotic Weed Control Timber Stand Improvement Mechanical Brush Treatments Funding provided by the USDA Forest Service through the 2009 American Recovery & Reinvestment Act. Cogongrass Treatment Cost-share Program Reduce the spread of Cogongrass to new areas by helping private landowners control or eradicate existing infestations. The program offers non-industrial private landowners up to 75% reimbursement toward the cost of approved herbicide treatments of cogongrass infestations over a 2-year period. Funding provided by the USDA Forest Service Other Duties CFA Foresters are often called upon to assist with many extra duties because of their technical forestry training Other duties may include: State Lands assistance Florida Wildfire Risk Assessment Forest Inventory & Analysis Fire Prevention Programs Urban & Community Forest assists Tree Farm Program assists 4
