Alta Loma Christian School Acceptable Use Policy 1:1 ipad Program Revised January 20, 2014 Alta Loma Christian (ALCS) recognizes that access to technology in school gives students greater opportunities to learn, engage, communicate, and develop skills that will prepare them for work, life, and citizenship. We are committed to helping students develop 21 st century technology and communication skills. In addition to the provisions of the ALCS Acceptable Use Agreement, the following additional items apply to students participating in the 1:1 ipad program. This Acceptable Use Policy outlines the guidelines and behaviors that students are expected to follow when using technologies in school or when using their ipad off campus. The ALCS wireless network is intended for educational purposes ONLY. All activity over the network or using school technologies will be monitored and retained. Access to online content via the network is restricted in accordance with the school s Acceptable Use Policy and federal regulations, such as the Children s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). Students are expected to follow the same rules for good behavior and respectful conduct on and offline. Misuse of school resources will result in disciplinary action as well as a possible loss of privileges. ALCS makes a reasonable effort to ensure students safety and security online, but will not be held accountable for any harm or damages that result from student use of school technologies. Users of the ALCS network or other technologies are expected to alert school faculty or administration immediately of any concerns for safety and security. Using the ipad at School ipads are intended for use at school each day. In addition to teacher expectations for ipad use, school messages, announcements, planners, calendars and schedules may be accessed using the ipad. Students who fail to bring the ipad to school or fail to maintain an operationally-charged battery will lose the privilege of the ipad for that day, will need to write in the Red Book, and will still be accountable to complete any required work via alternate means without the ipad and without extra time. Wireless Connectivity, Hot Spots and 3G Students using an ipad will be connected to the ALCS network. Students are NOT permitted to connect to the Internet using an outside connection, detected hot spot or 3G account while at school. Charging Your ipad s battery ipads must be brought to school every day in a fully charged condition. Students need to charge their ipads each evening. Fully charging an ipad can take up to five hours, depending on the percentage of battery life remaining. Please also note that the ipad uses a considerable amount of battery power even in sleep mode; in order to ensure power is preserved, students should power their ipads completely off when not in use for an extended period of time. Passwords Students should not share their assigned password, or attempt to discover the school Apple Id. Screensavers/Backgrounds Students may choose their own backgrounds and screensavers for their ipads. However, they will be consistent with their commitment to love God and love others, and must be approved by a teacher. Photos All technologies provided by or used at Alta Loma Christian School are intended for educational purposes. Students are expected to follow the Biblical mandate to honor the Lord Jesus Christ in all that they do. Therefore, students are expected to use technology in a way that is safe, appropriate, careful and kind. Any photo that is found on a student s 1 Page
ipad to be inappropriate will be immediately deleted, and disciplinary action will be taken based on the nature of the photo, and may include temporary or permanent loss of the student s ipad. Sound, Music Students may not download music from itunes or any other music sharing site unless directed by or with the permission of a teacher. On all ipads, sound must be muted at all times unless permission is obtained from the teacher for instructional purposes. Gaming Students are NOT permitted to use gaming apps during class time. Students may use gaming apps outside of class as long as it is not disruptive to other students and permission is obtained from a teacher or staff member. Teachers reserve the right to order students to close their gaming app or perform random flip checks at any time. Saving Work It is the student s responsibility to ensure that work is not lost due to mechanical failure, failure to back-up files or accidental deletion. ipad malfunctions are not an acceptable excuse for not submitting work; therefore, students should back up their saved work on a daily basis, such as by saving it to a personal computer or emailing it to themselves. Downloading apps Teachers may require apps or ibooks that have an application to their specific course content to be downloaded, and the cost of such apps will be covered by the school. If a student wishes to purchase/download an app that is apart from the class curriculum, he/she may do so only with administrative approval and parent approval. If approved, an appointed staff member will download the app for the student and a bill (if necessary) will be sent home for the application. Students will be eligible to submit a request for approval for downloading a personal app only after the students has successfully passed three (3) ipad weekly inspections. ipad inspection results will be emailed to parents via Renweb. Inspection Each week, a minimum of ten students will be selected at random to provide their ipad for inspection for security and policy purposes. In addition, any student s ipad can be searched at any time for any reason, with or without cause or reasonable suspicion. If a student s ipad is requested by a faculty or staff member for inspection, the student must submit his/her ipad immediately. Any saved content apart from classwork may be viewed and deleted if deemed necessary by school administration. Students should not delete their website browsing history, which will also be checked. Deleting the browsing history will result in a Red Book entry, and may also result in disabling browsing capabilities. Appropriate discipline consequences will be applied if anything is found that violates any school policy. The first occurrence of inappropriate or unauthorized content will incur loss of the ipad for 1 school day, demerit, and parents will be informed, second occurrence loss of the ipad for 5 school days, demerit, and parents will be informed, third occurrence loss of the ipad privileges for 15 school days and 1 day suspension. Further instances of inappropriate content will be dealt with on an individual basis. Web Access ALCS provides students with access to the Internet, including web sites, resources, content, and online tools. That access will be restricted in compliance with CIPA regulations and school policies. Web browsing may be monitored and web activity records may be retained indefinitely. ALCS makes no guarantee that the school s wireless network will be fully operational at all times. Users are expected to respect that the web filter is a safety precaution, and should not try to circumvent it when browsing the Web. If a site is blocked and a user believes it should not be, the user should follow ALCS protocol to alert a member of school faculty or administration. Browsing capabilities may be restricted at the discretion of the middle school teachers or at the request of the parent. 2 Page
Social Networking Accessing Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social networking sites and apps is prohibited using the school ipad. This applies on and off campus, with the ALCS network and outside connections off campus. Email ALCS provides students with email accounts for the purpose of school-related communication. Availability and use may be restricted based on school policies. If students are provided with email accounts, they should be used with care. Users: Should not send personal information; Should not attempt to open files or follow links from an unknown origin; Should use appropriate language at all times; and Should only communicate with other people as permitted by ALCS policy or teachers. Users are expected to communicate with the same appropriate, safe, mindful, and courteous conduct online as offline. Email usage may be monitored and archived at any time. Security Users are expected to take reasonable safeguards against the transmission of security threats over the school network. This includes not opening or distributing infected files or programs and not opening files or programs of unknown or untrusted origin. If a user believes a computer or mobile device at school is malfunctioning or might be infected with a virus, he/she should inform a teacher immediately. Users will not attempt to remove viruses or threats themselves. Netiquette Users should always use the Internet, network sources, and online sites in a courteous, respectful, and God-honoring manner. Users should always recognize that along with valuable content online there is also unverified, incorrect, or inappropriate content. Users should use only trusted sources when conducting research via the Internet. Users should not post anything online that they would not want parents, teachers, or future colleges or employees to see. Once something is online, it is accessible to the world and is never deleted, and can be shared and spread in ways that were never intended. Plagiarism Users should not plagiarize (or use as their own, without citing the original creator) content, including words or images from the Internet. Users should not take credit for things they did not create themselves, or misrepresent themselves as an author or creator of something found online. Research conducted via the Internet should be appropriately cited, giving credit to the original author. Personal Safety Users should never share personal information, including phone number, address, social security number, birthday, or financial information, over the Internet without adult permission. Users should recognize that communicating over the Internet brings anonymity and associated risks, and should carefully safeguard the personal information of themselves and others. Users should never agree to meet someone they meet online in real life. If a user sees a message, comment, image, or anything else online that makes him/her concerned for his/her personal safety, the student is required to bring it to the attention of an adult (teacher or staff member if the incident occurs at school, or parent if at home) immediately. Cyber Bullying Cyber-bullying will not be tolerated. Harassing, disrespecting, denigrating, impersonating, pranking, excluding, and cyber-stalking are all examples of cyber-bullying. Students will not send emails, post comments, or share information with the intent of scaring, hurting, or intimidating someone else. Engaging in such behaviors, or any online activities intended to harm (physically or emotionally) another person, will result in disciplinary action and an immediate loss of 3 Page
privileges. In some cases, cyber-bullying can be a crime. As a reminder, all student online activity is monitored and retained. Parent/Guardian Responsibilities Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about values and the standards that children should follow on the use of the Internet, just as should be discussed in regards to the use of all media information sources such as television, cell phones, videos, movies, and music. The $149 service fee/deductible must be paid by the parent to ALCS at the time the ipad is surrendered to ALCS to be repaired. If a second claim is needed in the same school year by the same student, the ipad will need to be replaced and the parent will be billed the current replacement cost. ipad Case Students are required to provide their own ipad case and protective sleeve. At the end of the ipad use period, students will keep the case and sleeve they purchased. All cases should be God honoring and must be approved by the school prior to issuance of the ipad.
