1 STUDENT LAPTOP RULES 1. Receiving Your Laptop - Laptops will be distributed each fall during LaptopOrientation. Parents & students must sign and return the Acceptable Use Agreement and Student Pledge documents before the laptop can be issued to their child. Laptops and ac adapter will be collected at the end of each school year for maintenance, cleaning and software installations. Students will retain their original laptop each year while enrolled at CHS. 2. Laptop Check-in - Laptops will be returned during final checkout on the last week of school. If a student transfers out of the School District during the school year, the laptop will be returned at that time. 3. Check-in Fines - If your laptop has been damaged or defaced, you will be fined for the damage at the end of the year during student laptop check-in or when checking out to transfer to another district. If a student laptop is not returned during year-end check-in or upon transferring out of District, the administration will be in charge of seeing this equipment is returned in a timely manner. If the administration is not successful, this matter will be turned over to local law enforcement. 4. Care of the Laptop - Students are responsible for the general care of the laptop they have been issued by the District. Laptops that are broken or fail to work properly must be taken to the Secondary Library Media Center (6-12). 5. General Precautions No food or drink is allowed next to or on top of your laptop at any time, particularly when it is in use. Cords, cables, and removable storage devices must be inserted carefully into the laptop. Students should never carry their laptops while the screen is open, unless directed to do so by a teacher. Laptops should be shut down before moving them to conserve battery life. Laptops must remain free of any writing, drawing, stickers, or labels that are not the property of the School District. Laptops must never be left in an unlocked car or any unsupervised area or in an area temperature will damage equipment. Students are responsible for keeping their laptop s battery charged for school each day. If you do not comply with the General Precautions, your laptop privileges may be suspended. 6. Carrying Laptops - The laptops have sufficient padding to protect the laptop from normal treatment and provide a suitable means for carrying the computer within the school. The guidelines below must be followed: Laptops should always be carried in school to each class. The laptop must be turned off before placing it in the carrying case. 7. Appearance of Laptops Students may not alter, decorate, personalize or in anyway mark the exterior of the laptop. This includes the application of stickers, tape, marker, pen, etc. All laptops must be returned in the same condition they were issued.
2 8. Screen Care - The laptop screens can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure on the screen. Do not lean on the top of the laptop when it is closed. Do not place anything near the laptop that could put pressure on the screen. Do not place anything in a school bag that will press against the cover. Do not poke the screen. Do not place anything on the keyboard before closing the lid (e.g. pens, pencils, or disks). Clean the screen with a soft, dry cloth or anti-static cloth. Do not use any liquid cleaners. Do not bump the laptop against lockers, walls, car doors, floors, etc as it will eventually break the screen 9. Using the Laptop at School - Laptops are intended for use at school each day. In addition to teacher expectations for laptop use, school messages, announcements, calendars and schedules may be accessed using the laptop computer. Students must be responsible to bring their laptop to all classes, unless specifically instructed not to do so by their teacher. 10. Laptops Left at Home - If students leave their laptop at home, they must use a laptop available in the building Secondary Library Media Center (6-12). If a student repeatedly (4 or more times as determined by any staff member) leaves their laptop at home, they may have their laptop privileges suspended. 11. Laptop Undergoing Repair - Loaner laptops may be issued to students when their laptop requires repair. 12. Charging Your Laptop s Battery - Laptops must be brought to school each day in a fully charged condition. Students need to charge their laptops each evening. Repeat violations (minimum of 4 days-not consecutively) of this policy may result in loss of laptop privileges. 13. Screensavers Inappropriate media may not be used as a screensaver. Any text or images advocating use of guns, weapons, pornographic materials, inappropriate language, alcohol, drug, gang related symbols or pictures, discrimination will result in disciplinary action in accordance with the District Code of Conduct. Passwords on screensavers are not to be used. Hard drive passwords are forbidden. If used, students may be responsible for the cost of replacement hardware and laptop privileges may be suspended. 14. Sound, Music, Games, or Programs Sound must be muted at all times unless permission is obtained from the teacher for instructional purposes. Do not save any music, games, or programs to the hard drive. All software must be District provided. Students should save files in Classlink on their home drives. 15. Printing - Students may use printers before/after school and during class with a teacher s permission via Classlink. 16. Home Internet Access - Students are allowed to set up dial-up, DSL and wireless networks on their laptops.
3 17. Managing Your Files and Saving Your Work Saving to the Home Directory - Students will be logging onto the District s network in order to back up their work. Students will have their own user account and folder on the network with ample space to back up any school-related work. Student server files size will be subject to disk quotas. When a student adds a document to their homedrive folder while working at home or away from school, that document will be copied automatically to the server when the student logs onto the network at school or home. Saving data to Removable storage devices - Students should also backup all of their work at least once each week using removable file storage. Removable memory sticks may be purchased at a local retailer. It is the student s responsibility to ensure that work is not lost due to mechanical failure or accidental deletion. Computer malfunctions are not an acceptable excuse for not submitting work. 18. Network Connectivity - The District makes no guarantee that their network will be up and running 100% of the time. In the rare case that the network is down, the District will not be responsible for lost or missing data. 19. Software on Laptops Originally Installed Software - The software originally installed by the District must remain on the laptop in usable condition and be easily accessible at all times. From time to time the school may add software applications for use in a particular course. The licenses for this software require that the software be deleted from laptops at the completion of the course. Periodic checks of laptops will be made to ensure that students have deleted software that is no longer required in class and that the school has not exceeded its licenses. Virus Protection - The laptop has anti-virus protection software. This software will scan the hard drive and floppy drive for known viruses on boot up. The virus software will be upgraded from the network. The District s servers are also installed with virus protection software. If a virus is found upon scanning, the student must turn in his/her laptop to the Secondary Library Media Center (6-12) BEFORE hooking it to the network the next day. Additional Software - Students are NOT allowed to load extra software on their laptops. Inspection - Students may be selected at random to provide their laptop for inspection. Procedure for re-loading software - If technical difficulties occur or illegal software is discovered the hard drive will then be re-formatted. Authorized software will be installed and the data files reinstated. The District does not accept responsibility for the loss of any software deleted due to a re-format and re-image.
4 Software Upgrades - Upgrade versions of licensed software are available from time to time. Students may be required to check in their laptops for periodic updates. 20. Acceptable Use - The District is pleased to be able to offer access to the District computers and technology which provide the necessary programs required by classes and the District network which provides access to student data storage, and the Internet. To gain access to these resources, students and parents must sign and return the Acceptable Use Form to the appropriate building administrator. While the laptops are provided to enhance educational goals and objectives, students may find ways to access other materials that may not be considered educational or find ways to use provided hardware and software beyond its educational intent. For this reason, it is extremely important that all policies and rules be followed. Misbehavior could result in temporary or permanent loss of access to the Internet, , or other technology privileges. Violations may also result in disciplinary action up to and including suspension from school in accordance with the District Code of Conduct. When applicable, law enforcement agencies may be involved. 21.
