March 2007 The following are some of the scholarships offered by a variety of institutions and corporations to assist eligible students finance their education. You will also find this Bulletin on the Counseling page of the school website. Visit this website regularly for updated information on scholarships, test dates, and college visitations. Also, check the expanded Resources section at the end of this Bulletin for reliable sources of information online. Scholarships and opportunities without specific deadlines February through June KeyBank Take 5 Scholarship Program Key Bank is giving away one $5,000 scholarship each month from February through June. Details available in the Counseling Office. Eastern Washington University College Assistance Migrant Program CAMP is a federally funded program designed to support students from migrant and seasonal farm worker backgrounds during their first year in college. The program provides students with both financial assistance and support services, with the goal of preparing them to continue their education at a four-year college or university. Applications available in the Counseling Office. No deadline. Whitman College Diversity-Merit Scholarships Need-based Financial Aid: These scholarships meet between 80 and 90 percent of a student s Whitman financial need with a gift aid. Renewable for the student s entire Whitman career. Merit-based Financial Aid: These scholarships range from $2,000-$25,000 per year and are renewable for a student s entire Whitman career. If you are interested in applying for one of these scholarships and visiting Whitman College, talk to Mrs. Bergman in the Counseling Office. Bank of America Financial Aid Sweepstakes Enter the Bank of America Financial Aid Sweepstakes for a chance to win $1,000 towards college tuition. Deadline: Now through August 2006 Washington Education Foundation Scholarships Program The mission of WEA is to provide college scholarships and mentoring to low-income, high potential students. The foundation administers several scholarship programs, including the Chateau Ste. Michelle Scholarship, The Achievers Scholarship Program, the Costco Scholarship Fund, the Governor s Scholarship Program, the Latino/a Scholarship Fund, etc. Visit the foundation website at www.waefoundation.org for information on individual scholarships and applications. Alert Scholarship Write an editorial on what your or community is doing, or what you would like to see them do to prevent drug and alcohol abuse. GPA 2.5+. You must be a senior. MARCH SCHOLARSHIPS Governor s Scholarship - Washington State Foster Youth To be eligible for this scholarship you must be (or have been until emancipation) a dependant youth in state, tribal or federally recognized foster, group, or kinship care in the state of Washington. Scholarships are expected to range between $1000 and $5000, and will vary depending upon each recipient's financial need. Applications available in the counseling office or online at: http://www.collegesuccessfoundation.org/gs/index.htm Deadline: March 1, 2007 Washington State Scholarship Foundation The Washington State Scholarship Foundation is awarding scholarships this year to graduates from Washington State public high schools beginning their freshman year of post-secondary educations. The scholarship will give primary consideration to the financial need of each applicant ($2,000 for attending a 4 year college or university and $1,000 for community college/vocational-technical or other accredited post-secondary school). Applications are available in the counseling office. Deadline: March 1, 2007 University of Idaho Space grant NASA Idaho Space Grant Consortium (ISGC) scholarships are available to students planning to attend initiations of higher education within the state of Idaho who plan to major in science, math engineering, computer science, or science/math education. Scholarship recipients are awarded up to $1,000 per academic school year (and is renewable for up to consecutive years). Applications available in the counseling office or online at: http://isgc.uidaho.edu (search website for scholarship ) Deadline: March 1, 2007 Junior Achievement: Excellence through ethics essay contest This is an essay contest that you fill out online. Scholarships to South Seattle Community College Are you a graduating high school senior planning on attending South Seattle Community College (SSCC) in the fall? The SSCC Foundation has scholarships for students who demonstrate strong academic performance, leadership qualities and involvement in school and community activities. Applications available in the counseling office or online at: http://www.southseattle.edu/foundation/support.htm Deadline: March 5, 2007 WASA and PEMCO: 21 st Century Educators Scholarship Any high school senior in Washington State who has a cumulative GPA of 3.0, exhibits leadership in a wide Varity of activities, and intends to pursue a career in education, is encouraged to apply for this award. There are three $4000 scholarships (spread out over 4 years) available. Applications available in the counseling office or online at: www.wasa-oly.org Deadline: March 9, 2007 The Robert J. Handy Memorial Scholarship The PEMCO Financial Center grants sixteen (16) Robert J. Handy Scholarships in memory of Robert J. Handy who founded the Washington State Teachers Credit Union, which was later expanded to PEMCO. These scholarships will be granted in the amount of $600 per year, renewable for a total of five years if grades, citizenship, self-reliance, etc., are maintained at acceptable levels. Applications available in the counseling office or online at: http://www.wssra.org/scholarshipform.htm Deadline: March 9, 2007 The Washington State School Retirees (WSSR) Foundation Scholarship The WSSR-Foundation grants eight (8) scholarships in the amount of $1,200 each, for one year only. Recipients of this scholarship will be selected from the first alternates for the Robert J. Handy Scholarships. Winners of all scholarships will be notified by May 1. An additional scholarship, the Don and Myrtle Bunt Scholarship will also be awarded to a recipient in SW Washington. Kelly Scholarship is designed to reward students who demonstrate good citizenship while striving to attain their academic goals. Each scholarship is worth $2,500, 50 scholarships were awarded last year! Applications are available in the counseling office. Deadline: March 10, 2007

SEMI Pacific Northwest Steering Committee Scholarship The SEMI Foundation and the NW Steering Committee of SEMI are offering three $2,000 scholarships that will be awarded to High School and University applicants for the 2007/2008 school year. To apply for this scholarship you must send in your resume, transcript, answers to their essay questions and letter of referral. The prompts for the essay and mailing address can be found in the counseling office or online at: http://wps2a.semi.org (search website for scholarship ) Deadline: March 15, 2007 Eastern Washington University: Chicano Education Program This scholarship is for Latino students intending on going to Eastern Washington University. There are 14 scholarship awards offering between $300 and $1,000. Applications available in the counseling office or online at: http://www.ewu.edu/x16144.xml Deadline: March 16, 2007 Blacks at Microsoft (BAM) The mission of the BAM Scholarship is to encourage and enable Black high school students to (a) go to college, (b) realize the impact technology has on the world, and (c) target a career in the technology industry. Offering (1) $2,500 scholarship, renewable for up to four years. Applications are available in the counseling office. Deadline: March 30, 2007 Washington Burglar & Fire Alarm Association Youth Scholarship The Washington Burglar and Fire Alarm Association, is a state trade association for licensed professional burglar and fire alarm companies. They work closely with law enforcement and fire service officials in the course of their business and strive to enhance their relationship to better serve the public safety and security needs. They are offers $11,500 in state and national awards. Applications available in the counseling office or online at: www.washingtonbfaa.org Deadline: March 30, 2007 BECU Foundation Scholarship Program The BECU Foundation was established in 1995 by BECU to encourage and administer contributions for educational scholarships. In 1996, BECU endowed the Foundation with $1,000,000 so that at least 25 $2000 scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors and undergraduate students each year. Two additional scholarships were then established in 2002 to honor the memory of past BECU leaders W. Jim Roller, former CEO of BECU Financial Services, and M. Bud Jewell, former BECU President and CEO. Scholarship awards recognize service in the community, leadership, and academic achievement. ** NOTE: you must have a BECU member. Seattle Association of Black Journalists (SABJ) The scholarship program is open to African-American students with a serious career interest in print, photo or broadcast journalism. Awards will be made based on scholastic achievement, financial need, and commitment to journalism and to minorities. Applications available in the counseling office or online at: http://www.sabjonline.org/scholarships.html Washington State PTA 2007 Financial Grant Application Each year, the Washington State PTA awards a limited number of financial grants to graduates from Washington State public high schools beginning their freshman year of post-secondary education. For the 2007-2008 academic year, grants of two thousand dollars ($2,000) will be given to recipients entering four-year post-secondary institutions. One thousand ($1,000) dollar grants will be awarded for community colleges, voc-tech schools or other accredited institutions. Applications available in the counseling office or online at: http://www.wastatepta.org/programs/financial_grant.htm Seattle Swedish Community Scholarships The Seattle Swedish Community Center has instituted a Scholarship Program and is offering 10 awards ranging from $750 to $6,000. You do not need to be of Swedish decent, to only requirements for applying to these scholarships are that you must be a high school senior, attend a high school in King County, and reside in King County, WA and have completed the STA or ACT (as they will need a copy of your scores). Applications are available in the counseling office. Southeast Chapter of Blacks in Government Scholarship Program Blacks in Government (BIG) was conceived by Department of Health, Education and Welfare s (HEW) Black Federal employees at the Parklawn Building in Rockville, Maryland because of a wide assortment of racially motivated problems faced by the HEW Black employees. BIG will be awarding three $1,000 scholarships to African American students who have/will graduate (or receive a GED) by June 30, 2007. Applications are available in the Counseling Center.
