User Manual for dcmobile Mobile Data Centre Analyser Application
GENERAL INFORMATION 1 GENERAL INFORMATION The General Information section explains the application in general terms, and the purpose for which it is intended. 1.1 Application Overview dcmobile is a platform and processor independent mobile data centre analyser application. It is used by Data Centre managers to display the real time power profile for a datacentre or datacentres, allowing the user to view power usage of an datacentre as a whole, or more specifically the power usage of a floor, rack or server within a datacentre, as well as the proportion of power that is being used by specific applications at server level. The application also facilitates the setting of alarm thresholds whereby designated personnel are notified of the occurrence of any event that is set to trigger an alarm, such as a spike in power usage on a designated rack. Further functionality is included with the application whereby reports can be generated that analyse the implications of the power profile of a datacentre and its assets. 1.2 Organisation of the manual The user manual consists of four sections: General Information, System Summary, Getting Started and Using the System. The General Information section explains in general terms the application and the purpose for which it is intended. The System Summary section provides a general overview of the system. The summary outlines the uses of the application s hardware and software requirements, the application s configuration and user access levels. The Getting Started section explains how to get the dcmobile application and install it on a device. The section describes the application landing page. The Using The System section provides a detailed description of the application functions. dcmobile User Manual Page 2
APPLICATION SUMMARY 2 APPLICATION SUMMARY The System Summary section provides a general overview of the application. The summary outlines the uses of the application, hardware and software requirements, the application s configuration and user access levels. 2.1 Application Configuration dcmobile operates on mobile devices running Android, Windows or OS X operating systems. The application is fully device responsive with optimal viewing and navigation experience provided to the user across the full range of devices, including desktop computer monitors, laptops, tablets and mobile phones. The application requires an internet connection in order to access the master server on which the database that stores power and energy related data for the datacentre(s) is located. The application has been designed and built for use on all major internet browsers, and after installation on a device, the dcmobile application can be used without any further configuration. 2.2 The Papillon System dcmobile is a mobile application designed to be used in conjunction with the Papillon energy management system for datacentres that has been produced by Stratergia Ltd. Papillon (Profiling and Auditing of Power Information in Large and Local Organisational Networks) is a software based system that measures energy and power consumption at datacentre, floor, rack, server and application level in real time, providing human readable data that assists data centre managers in identifying potential energy saving actions. The dcmobile application has been developed to increase the functionality of the Papillon system, whereby datacentre managers and engineers have the facility of having a mobile interface with the Papillon system that has been installed on their datacentre(s), allowing for real time monitoring of the performance of the datacentre and assets within the datacentre out of hours and while in transit or offsite. The application has been designed and implemented by Nishant Casey, Garrett Coleman, Mike Finn, Thomas McAllister and David O'Connor as part of the Agile Software Development Group project module of the Master of Science (MSc), Computer Science (Conversion) 2013-2014 at University College Dublin. dcmobile utilises a PHP based implementation of Stratergia's RESTful Papillon API, more detailed information on the Papillon system can be found at www.stratergia.com and is outside the scope of this user manual. 2.3 User Access Levels As the application has been designed for datacentre managers wishing to monitor the performance of datacentres remotely and while in transit, the application can only be accessed by registered users. dcmobile User Manual Page 3
GETTING STARTED 3 GETTING STARTED The Getting Started section explains how to get the dcmobile application and install it on a device. The section describes the application landing page. 3.1 Logging In User names and password are provided to the user as part of the installation of the Papillon system on a family of servers. Once the application has been installed the user arrives at the login page: If the user has forgotten their password they can click on the 'Forgotten Password' link and then are brought to a change password page: Upon successful login the user is brought to the application's landing page: dcmobile User Manual Page 4
