3 Known Problems and Limitations It is possible when you run the IIS Log Archiver IIS may stop websites from starting up correctly. You also may not be able to manage IIS from computer manager; an error similar to the path specified cannot be used at this time may be displayed. This is a known bug and a fix is available from Microsoft, KB The update does require a server reboot to complete. We have seen this issue on both Windows bit and 64bit, we would advise installing the update provided by Microsoft before using the IIS Log Archiver. Dwebs Ltd 3

4 Installing Dwebs IIS Log Archiver Installing the IIS Log Archiver is a simple process and follows the same procedure as if you were installing any other Helm 4 module / extension. As the IIS Log Archiver is a Server Extension you need to install it on each of the servers you wish to use it on. The Log Archiver can only be installed on servers which have IIS 6 or 7 configured.. To install the Dwebs IIS Log Archiver please do the following 1.) Open the Helm 4 Configuration Tool either from the Desktop or your Start Menu 2.) Click the Installed Modules Button on the left Dwebs Ltd 4

5 3.) Scroll to the Server Extension Section 4.) Look through the list for a Server Extension labelled Dwebs IIS Log Archiver 5.) Select the Dwebs IIS Log Archiver and Click Install / Uninstall Modules 6.) This process may take up to 1 min while the extension is downloaded and installed. The more module changes you make the longer the install / uninstall process will take Dwebs Ltd 5

7 Manually run the IIS Log Archiver The IIS Log Archver can either be run as a scheduled task or manually from within Helm s interface. All though it is possible to run manually we recommend for the first run through you use a Scheduled Task as the process can take a considerable amount of time depending on number of domains and how many logs each domain contains. If you do decide to run the archiver manually your browser will remain in the page loading state until the task is complete To run the Log Archiver manually follow these steps 1.) Login to Helm as an Admin. 2.) On the left tree navigation menu Click Helm System. 3.) On the sub-menu Click Servers. Dwebs Ltd 7

8 4.) On the Servers sub-menu Click Your Servers Name. 5.) You will now be presented with a page showing details about the selected server including the Helm Version, Status and various other options. If you scroll to the bottom of the page you will be shown many icon s depending on how many Server Extensions you have installed. Click the icon labelled Archive IIS Logs 6.) To use the Log Archiver you have three fields to complete - IIS Version o Either Version 6 or 7 - Domains Folder o The root path of your domain store - Archive Logs older than (days) o The minimum amount of day s old the logs have to be before they are archived Dwebs Ltd 8

Once you have filled out the info like shown in the example below Click Archive Please remember if this is the first time you have run the IIS Log Archiver it can take a considerable amount of time and your browser may timeout. ** If you archive logs before they have been processed by the Helm Bandwidth Calculation task domains bandwidth usage figures may be incorrect. 10 IIS Log Archiver Scheduled Task The key feature of the Dwebs IIS Log Archiver is the ability to schedule a task to run at the time you desire to archive all website logs on the selected server. As with all Helm 4 scheduled tasks it is not recommended for multiple tasks to run simultaneously due to possible schedule task corruption and crash issues A server with 150 websites should complete a log archive task within 25mins if you run the task once a day and don t have an overloaded system. To setup a Scheduled Task please follow the steps below 1.) Click Helm System from the left tree navigation menu 2.) Click Scheduled Tasks from the sub-menu 3.) To create a new task Click Add Dwebs Ltd 10

11 4.) You will be shown the following page Task Start Date: This is the date you want the task to start. Start Time This is the time you want the task to start we would recommend setting this value to the time of day when your server is quiet this is because the Log Archiving task can be disk I/O intense depending on number of domains and files to archive. Run Every: The interval you wish the task to run at, you do not need to run this task more than once per day. Task Name: The friendly name you wish to give the task, as each of your web servers will needs its own IIS Log Archiver Schedule Task its recommended to put the server name IIS Log Archive so it is easier to understand what each task is doing. 12 5.) Select Server from the drop down box labelled Type. 6.) The page will refresh and from the Item drop down menu select the server you wish the task to run on. Dwebs Ltd 12

13 7.) From the Task drop down box select [IIS Log Archiver] Archive IIS Logs 8.) The page will refresh and similar to running the archiver manually you need to enter three values. IIS Version: This will be either 6 or 7 (Windows 2003 = 6, Windows 2008 = 7) Domain Folder: This is the Domain Store path by default Helm sets this to C:\Domains when you install the IIS Provider but you may have changed it to another path. Archive Logs older than (days): This value tells the system how many days old the logs have to be before it will archive them. We recommend a value of 30 Days. 9.) When you have filled in all fields as shown in the example below, Click Save. Dwebs Ltd 13

14 10.) The Scheduled Task will now run at the date and time you specified. You can always run a Scheduled Task manually by selecting the task and Clicking Run Selected. All archived logs are stored in a single ZIP Archive labelled OldLogs.zip this is located in the customers domain logs folder. ** If you archive logs before they have been processed by the Helm Bandwidth Calculation task domains bandwidth usage figures may be incorrect.
