Visual and Performing Arts Subject Template (Required Information needed to prepare for course submission) Course Purpose: What is the purpose of this course? Please provide a brief description of the goals and expected outcomes. (How these will be accomplished should be reserved for the Course Outline, Key and Written assignments, Assessments, and/or Instructional Methods.) NOTE: More specificity than a simple recitation of the State Standards is needed. Digital Design I is a course designed to engage art students in the use of a variety of contemporary design technologies that require unique and specialized media critical and problem solving skills. Students will begin with natural media explorations in their design journal, using brainstorming and idea generation techniques to develop projects best suited for electronic media output: graphic design, motion graphics and animation. Each project will use the elements of art and principles of design to structure their work around specific goals and content which in turn will be directed towards the creation of a portfolio of exemplary work as part of college and job applications. Students will design media projects for a variety of authentic experiences such as poster designs for school productions, web and print designs for local businesses and media public service announcements(psas) for nonprofit clients. Course Outline: A detailed descriptive summary of all topics covered. All historical knowledge is expected to be empirically based, give examples. Show examples of how the text is incorporated into the topics covered. A mere listing of topics in outline form is not sufficient (i.e. textbook table of contents or California State Standards). 15. Topic: Logo Design. Assignment: Create a series of logos for a variety of business types including our school, a local non-profit organization, and other companies. 16. Topic: Typography Project. Assignment: Sort specific fonts into correct categories. From a chosen piece of literature, create a concrete poem graphic focusing on aspects of scale, distortion, emphasis, and unity. 17. Topic: Photography and photo manipulation exercises. Assignment: Study the use of photography in contemporary design. Exercises in manipulation and distortion of photography using computer software to color correct, add filters, crop, and restore images. Compare manipulated with raw photos. Create a photo collage using a known work of art as a guide. 18. Topic: Digital Illustration project. Assignment: Examine contemporary digital illustration. Create original digital illustrations for poster projects combining natural and digital media. 19. Topic: Promotional Poster-project. Assignment: Create a promotional poster for a school performance. Research characters, event location, play content. Follow the design process, focusing on the design principles of emphasis and contrast. 20. Topic: Peer/Personal Critique. Assignment: Evaluate own and other student s work using the Feldman model of critique. Discuss the work s interpretation based on various points-of-view and theories of art. Rework the design based on this critical feedback. 21. Topic: Non-profit public service announcement (PSA) motion graphic-group project. Assignment: Create a 30 second PSA for a local non-profit organization using animated elements. Work with the client, research the topic/business, develop concept using the design process, focus on specific elements and principles of design. 22. Topic: Motion graphics show opening - project. Assignment: Create a show opening for a documentary, historical movie or film from literature using motion graphics software such as Adobe Flash. Use the design process and storyboarding techniques to create the sequence of elements. 23. Topic: Contemporary Music Video group project. Assignment: Based on a piece of music from another culture, a design team will produce a music video using a variety of digital and natural media elements. Student roles include art director, video director, designer, and storyboard artist. 24. Topic: Student Portfolio project. Assignment: Select work to be placed in portfolio. Refine the work to be mounted for presentation. Develop an artist statement, discussing personal focus and direction. 25. Topic: Student Web Portfolio project. Assignment: Examine effective web page design. Create a website portfolio to present print and media work. 26. Topic: Digital Art Show project. Assignment: Choose and present work for display at a year-end art event. Instructional Methods and/or Strategies: Indicate how the Instructional Methods and/or Strategies support the delivery of the curriculum. What portions of the Course Outline are supported by the methods and strategies? Students will use a design journal as part of their design process. They will address each unit using this process to create culminating studio projects. Students will receive direct instruction on computer graphic techniques. Each class will begin with a design prompt that will introduce the lesson s topics. Each project will have a rubric to help students evaluate and critique their own work and the work of others. Each project will receive personal, peer and teacher feedback including using the Feldman model of criticism. Each unit will also have a vocabulary quiz to support the specific language used in design critiques. Students will be required to present their work monthly to their peers for review and at the end of the year to a design panel when they present their completed portfolios. A list of instructional methods and strategies will include: Page 6

Direct instruction consisting of lecture, discussion, and demonstration Project-based assignments Reading, internet searching and research Individual and group presentations in class Design journal work which includes drawing, idea generation and work evaluation Design video and powerpoint instruction Vocabulary/reading quizzes Feldman method for writing critiques Presentation of a final portfolio of year s work Assessments Including Methods and/or Tools: Indicate the intent of each assessment and a brief description of how each relates to the Course Purpose and goals related to the development of critical thinking and other habits of mind skills. Using writing analysis, demonstrate a working knowledge of specialized graphic design vocabulary and terminology. Rubrics are used to evaluate creative work based on artistic choices and decisions. Individual assessment of all projects, writings, essays and quizzes. Students are required to keep a design journal of their drawings and written work. Journals include class notes, thumbnail sketches, personal reflections/observations, and reactions to art of other designers. Critical thinking skills are developed through class discussions, public critiques and the Feldman writing process. Tests and quizzes demonstrating a working knowledge of industry terms, operational commands, graphic design vocabulary and design elements and principles. Creative, project based assignments will be presented, completed and graded according to rubrics which will be presented to students before beginning work on project. Computer exercises and quizzes to assess students basic skill level. Artistic Perception: Courses must include processing, analyzing, and responding to sensory information through the language and skills unique to a given art. Describe in detail how the class satisfies the Artistic Perception requirement. Provide examples where this might appear in the outline and/or assignments/activities. 1. Identify and use the principles of design to discuss and analyze personal designs, known works of art and students work. Topic: Global Design / Local Design: How design is used in society. Assignment: Evaluate published designs from different societies and cultures by analyzing their effectiveness 2. Describe the principles of design as used in works of art focusing on dominance and subordination. Topic: Principles of Art exercises. Assignment: Identify the principles of art in selected works of art and design. Find works that focus on emphasis, contrast and unity. 3. Analyze how a composition of a work of art is affected by the use of particular principle of design. Topic: Critical analysis of design work. Assignment: Analyze a variety of effective, real world designs using the Feldman critique model to decipher their expressive qualities, use of specific principles of art and their effect on the overall design. 4. Compare and contrast similar styles of works of art done in electronic media with those done with materials traditionally used in the visual arts. Topic: Photography and photo manipulation exercises. Create a photo collage using a known work of art as a guide. 6. Analyze their works of art as to personal direction and style. Topic: Student Portfolio project. Assignment: Select work to be placed in portfolio. Refine the work to be mounted for presentation. Develop an artist statement, discussing personal focus and direction. 7. Select three works of art from their art portfolio and discuss the intent of the work and the use of the media. Topic: Student Portfolio project. Assignment: Select work to be placed in portfolio.
