Application Guide Surface Preparation Steel Surfaces Coating performance is dependent on the cleanliness of the substrate surface. All surfaces should be thoroughly degreased to remove oil and grease. Other surface contaminants should be removed by high pressure detergent washing and rinsed clean. Prior to blast cleaning any sharp protuberances, surface laminations, weld spatter, etc. shall be removed by thorough cleaning and grinding. Metal surfaces should be blast cleaned in accordance with NACE No. 2 SSPC-SP 10 ISO 8501:1, Grade SA 2 ½, near white finish using suitable abrasive to a profile of 3-4 mils (75-100 microns). Immediately after blast cleaning all dust, residues and debris left on the surface must be removed. If flash rusting occurs prior to coating, these areas must be re-blasted to the required standard. Concrete Surfaces Surfaces should first be high pressure water jetted to remove dirt and contamination. The surface should then be prepared by light abrasive wet blasting, hydro-blasting, or sponge blasting taking care not to expose the aggregate, to help ensure complete removal of contamination and any laitance which may be present. Immediately after cleaning, all dust, residues and debris left on the surface must be removed. Blow holes and damaged areas of concrete should be filled using a polymer modified mortar which should be allowed to cure for 72 hours prior to over-coating. The mortar/filler should be applied using a rag fill technique or scrap coat to provide a rough profiled surface. Depending on the condition of the concrete a full fairing coat of 1 mm to 3 mm may be required to fully satisfy the porosity of the concrete. Prior to coating the concrete should be dried and should have a moisture content of 7% or less. Concrete substrates should be sealed with 3M Scotchkote Urethane Sealer 165CS. Application Conditions Do not apply when the relative humidity exceeds 85% or when the surface to be coated is less than 5 F (3 C) above the dew point. Minimum temperature for application is 40 F (5 C). Plural Feed Hot Airless Spray Equipment Typical Equipment: 4:1 Base to Activator proportioning pump, fitted with recirculating Base and Activator lines of sufficient length to reach all areas to be coated with equipment located as close as possible to the work piece, the equipment should have 60 mesh inline filters, heated lines and in-line heaters. The heaters are to be capable of providing and maintaining a mixed temperature at the spray gun of 50 60 C. NOTE: With Scotchkote coating 165HB only the Base should be pre-heated. Spray Tip Size: 0.019" 0.027" Tip size and fan width will vary depending on caliper requirements and the geometry of the article to be coated. For example, if tanks contain any ancillary equipment the use of the smaller sizes to allow some control over film thickness is recommended. In-line filters: 60 mesh Tip Temperature: 122 F 140 F (50 C - 60 C) Tip Pressure: Typically 3000 psi When airless spray is being used, excessively high tip spraying pressures should be avoided. The minimum pressure at the pump conducive with good atomization should be used. The Base and Activator are pumped individually to the airless proportioning pump and recirculated either through the base and activator lines back into the heated tanks or via the in line heaters, through the lines, back into the base and activator containers or back into the heated tanks. Material in tanks should be continually mixed to prevent hotspots. In practice, the heated Base and Activator are kept separate throughout the system until they meet at the mixer head. To minimize temperature losses, the feed lines are insulated and the spray gun is attached by a single airless paint line to the mixer head. Since this line contains mixed coating at an elevated temperature the length of the line is kept to a minimum. In addition, the whip end line can also be insulated. When long lengths of product line are used, it is advantageous to use heated lines. During start up and when spraying stops, the Base and Activator are recirculated down the Base and Activator return lines and left on recirculation to ensure that the coating in the lines is maintained at a constant temperature. When any spraying stops for an extended time the solvent flush line is activated, this flushes out and cleans the mixer head and whip end line of mixed Scotchkote urethane coating 165HB. Application of 3M Scotchkote Urethane Sealer 165CS for concrete applications Scotchkote urethane sealer 165CS is designed as a sealer for concrete surfaces prior to the application of the Scotchkote urethane coating 165HB lining system. Concrete surfaces must be clean, dry and free from contamination and loose material. Scotchkote urethane sealer 165CS is a two component solvent free material which must be mixed together prior to use, the Activator component should be added to the Base component and then stirred until thoroughly homogeneous. Scotchkote urethane sealer 165CS should be applied by brush or roller working the material into the surface to give a uniform coating

and ensuring that the surface is completely wetted out. Scotchkote urethane sealer 165CS can also be applied by spray, however if spray application is used the applied material should be back rolled immediately after application to ensure correct penetration and wetting of the concrete surface as above. Scotchkote urethane sealer 165CS should be over-coated after a minimum of 3 hours and within 24 hours at temperatures of 20 C/68 F. See chart below for additional temperature parameters. 3M Scotchkote Urethane Sealer 165CS Overcoat Requirements Substrate Temperature Minimum Maximum 5 C (41 F) 8 hours 72 hours 10 C (50 F) 6 hours 48 hours 15 C (59 F) 4 hours 36 hours 20 C (68 F) 3 hours 24 hours 25 C (77 F) 2 hours 18 hours 30 C (86 F) 1.5 hours 12 hours Application of 3M Scotchkote Urethane Coating 165HB To maintain the specified film thickness at edges and around any sharp protuberances, a stripe coat should be applied to these areas prior to carrying out the overall application. The stripe coat may be applied by brush or plural feed hot airless spray. Note: In cold conditions brush application of a stripe coat may be difficult due to increase in product viscosity at low temperatures, and to aid in ease of application it is advisable to raise the temperature of the base component to a minimum of 10 C prior to mixing and application. The overall application, unless other methods are approved, will be by plural feed hot airless spray equipment. During application all crevices and deeply pitted surfaces must be completely penetrated and coated, regular checks of wet thickness with a wet thickness gauge is recommended to ensure the specified thickness is applied. Scotchkote urethane coating 165HB should be applied as evenly as possible to the specified thickness, excessive build up of coating should be avoided. Each area coated should be visually checked for misses or holidays. Any area found should be recoated prior to moving on to the next area. For steel applications the dry film thickness should be an average of 1mm. For concrete wastewater applications the recommended nominal dry film thickness for the system is 1.5mm (minimum of 1.25 mm). If required, a second coat of Scotchkote urethane coating 165HB can be applied after a minimum of 2 hours and within 24 hours at 20 C/68 F. See chart below for additional overcoat parameters. Where the maximum over-coating time is exceeded surface preparation procedures detailed for touch-up and repair should be followed. As soon as the Scotchkote urethane coating 165HB is applied all masking tape should be removed. Scotchkote urethane coating 165HB system achieves full cure after 7 days at 20 C. 3M Scotchkote Urethane Coating 165HB Overcoat Requirements Substrate Temperature Minimum Maximum 5 C (41 F) 6 hours 72 hours 10 C (50 F) 4 hours 48 hours 15 C (59 F) 3 hours 36 hours 20 C (68 F) 2 hours 24 hours 25 C (77 F) 1.5 hours 18 hours 30 C (86 F) 1 hour 12 hours

Touch Up and Repair Procedures using 3M Scotchkote Urethane Coating 165BG Scotchkote urethane coating 165 BG is the brushing version of Scotchkote urethane coating 165HB for use on applications where the use of plural feed hot spray equipment is not practical. Surface Preparation The coating surface should be examined and any damaged or loose material must be cut back to a sound edge. Surfaces should then be thoroughly degreased and detergent washed to remove contaminants. The damaged area should be thoroughly abraded ideally by abrasive blasting, but where blasting is not possible grinding or power sanding should be used. The abrading process should be extended for 50-75 mm onto adjacent sound coating. All resultant dust and debris should be removed from the surface and surfaces should again be degreased to remove any contamination resulting from the abrasion process. Application of 3M Scotchkote Urethane Coating 165 BG The prepared area may now be coated with Scotchkote urethane coating 165 BG to the specified thickness. Scotchkote urethane coating 165 BG is a two component material comprising Base and Activator components which must be mixed together prior to use. The Base component should be stirred, and while continuing to stir, the Activator component should be added and mixed until homogeneous. The mixed Scotchkote urethane coating 165 BG should then be applied by brush ensuring that all surfaces are thoroughly wetted out. Application of the wet film thickness should be checked to ensure the specified thickness is applied. If required a second coat of Scotchkote urethane coating 165 BG should be applied after 2 hours and within 24 hours at 20 C to achieve the specified thickness.
