Cincinnati State Great Oaks School of Practical Nursing Practical Nursing Certificate (PNC) Program Overview The Cincinnati State Practical Nursing Certificate (PNC) program offers classes at our Main Campus and the Great Oaks Career Campuses. The PNC program is offered as a continuous 3-semester day or evening program. The program objective is to prepare students for a certificate in the field of practical nursing. Program graduates are eligible to take the NCLEX-PN exam for licensure as a Practical Nurse. The curriculum prepares students to share in the responsibility of patient care through correlated theory and clinical practice in the area of basic nursing skills in a variety of care settings. Accreditation The Cincinnati State Great Oaks School of Practical Nursing program is approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing (OBN), 17 S. High Street, Suite 400, Columbus, OH 43215-3413, (614) 466-3947. Credentialing Graduates must past NCLEX-PN, the national standardized practical nursing examination, to practice as a licensed practical nurse. Employment Outlook Graduates from the PNC program are prepared to work in a variety of settings including long term care, nursing and rehabilitation centers, clinics, hospice, home care, physician offices, and limited hospital settings. Tuition Rates For the 2013 2014 academic school years, tuition is $142.17 per credit hour for Ohio residents and $284.34 per credit hour for non-residents. Students will accrue additional expenses due to program cost and requirements. Getting Started Attend a Get There College Information Session hosted by the Office of Admission. Sessions are held at the Cincinnati State Technical and Community College main campus every Tuesday at 9:00am and at 6:30pm. During this session, prospective students will learn about the admissions and financial aid processes and tour the campus (campus tour 9:00am session only). Program Admission and Progression Practical Nursing Certificate Progression Requirements: To apply to the PNC program you must complete the college admission process and declare Practical Nursing Certificate as your major. Students will progress to the core curriculum once he/she has met the progression requirements. College Admission Process 1. Complete the application to Cincinnati State Technical and Community College online at https://swebapps.cincinnatistate.edu/apply/page_who_are_you.aspx. Declare Practical Nursing (PNC) as your major. There is no application fee. A $15 nonrefundable admission fee will be applied at your first registration. 2. Request that your high school guidance counselor and/or college registrar s office send high school and college transcripts (if applicable) directly to Cincinnati State, Office of Admission Records. Hand-carried transcripts are not accepted. If you have a GED, send a copy of the original transcript of GED scores to the Office of Admission Records. 3. All students seeking a degree or certificate must take the COMPASS TM placement test in the areas of mathematics, reading, writing, and keyboarding. If a student has taken prior English and/or Mathematics coursework from an accredited post-secondary institution with a grade of C or higher within the last 7 years, the student may submit a request to the Admissions office to waive the test. 4. All required Academic Foundations courses must be completed prior to being eligible to apply for progression into the Practical Nursing Certificate program Academic Advising Students who are required to enroll in Academic Foundations courses based on COMPASS TM test scores are seen by a pre-admit Advisor in the Advising and Counseling Center, Room 168 Main Building. To schedule an appointment with a pre-admit advisor, students should call the Advising and Counseling Center at (513)-569-1552. Program Advising Students who have completed all (or were not required to complete) Academic Foundations courses are seen by a program advisor in the Health and Public Safety division office, Room 312 Health Professions Building. Cohort Advising Students who have met all Practical Nursing progression requirements and have attended an orientation for a Practical Nursing cohort/class and those students currently in the Practical Nursing course sequence are seen by a cohort advisor at the Great Oaks Career Campuses. PNC Progression Requirements PNC Progression Process Attend Practical Nursing Information Session Curriculum GPA 2.0 and above: *Students must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or greater to remain eligible Math & Science GPA 2.0 and above: *Students must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or greater to remain eligible Appropriate WorkKeys score-to schedule call PTEC office at 569-4135 STNA State Tested Nurse Aide - All students entering the PNC program must verify that they are in good standing on a state Nurse Aide registry. Complete PNC Application If applicable, documentation of healthcare work history on company letterhead If applicable, documentation of military service on form DD-214 PNC Progression Application Process 1. Apply for the Practical Nursing Program during the open application period only by submitting a PNC Progression e-form. There will be a specific application period for each semester. Please refer to the Cincinnati State PNC website for dates. Once applications are reviewed, applicants are moved forward in the progression process based upon the applicant s PNC Progression worksheet scores. 2. Progressing applicants will be notified of these additional requirements and the deadline for submission. a) CPR Certification Certification must be for Healthcare Provider or Professional Rescuer for adults, infants, children and AED. Online certifications with hands on demonstration accepted. Cards must be signed. b) PNC Statement of Health Form with current Immunization Student must submit a completed PNC Statement of Health Form with current immunization records. c) Criminal Background Check Student must complete both a BCI&I and FBI background check when selected to progress. Background checks must be for the nursing profession and care of children and adults. The background checks must be received by the program chair by the established deadline. Failure to complete paperwork in appropriate timeframe will be ground for dismissal from the progression process. Students should be aware that many facilities also require drug screening and additional background restrictions. Background checks are offered in the Cincinnati State Public Safety office in the Main Building, Room 7. The cost as of November, 2011is $60.00. High school courses earning one full credit or college course with an earned grade of C or better for biology and chemistry. Biology and chemistry courses must include a lab. These courses must be completed within 7 years or less from the date of admission to the program. If you do not have these prerequisites, equivalent courses may be taken at the college: BIO 100 or BIO 111 (equivalent term courses BIO 4071 & BIO 4073); CHE 100 or CHE 110 (equivalent term courses CHE 2202 & 2203; or CHE 2204 & 2205). Cincinnati State Great Oaks School of Practical Nursing Tentative/Typical Start Dates and Class Times PNC Day Program 3 Semesters (approximately 1 year) Class Times: Monday Friday between 8:00am 5:00pm Clinical Times: Monday Saturday between 6:30am 11:30pm Semester 3 has 120 hours of role transition working the schedule of a Licensed Nurse PNC Evening Program 3 Semesters (approximately 1 year) Class Times: Monday Thursday between 4:00pm 10:30pm with the possibility of some open lab times occurring between 3:00pm and 4:00pm one or two days per week. Clinical Times: Monday Saturday between 6:30am 11:30pm Semester 3 has 120 hours of role transition working the schedule of a Licensed Nurse. WorkKeys Test All students entering the Practical Nursing Certificate (PNC) program are required to take the WorkKeys test. WorkKeys is a job assessment tool measuring real-world skills. The test is 4.5 hours and covers Applied Math, Locating Information and Reading for Information. Students must have a level 4 score in order to meet the requirements for PN Health Program Progression. Students can register for the test by calling the Pathway to Employment Center at 513.569.4135. The Center is located at 1916 Central Parkway (Super Jobs building).
