1. INTRODUCTION The objective of this document is to explain how to enter a new key in an appliance when there is no Internet connection. 2. REQUIRED MATERIALS It is compulsory to have a license file sent by the AlienVault Support Department for entering a new key in an appliance. This file (alienvault-license.deb) can be sent through an email or through a USB flash drive. 3. HOW TO PREPARE THE USB FLASH DRIVE The instructions below should be followed: 1. Insert the USB flash drive into a PC. 2. Format the USB flash drive as FAT32. See APPENDIX A - HOW TO FORMAT THE USB FLASH DRIVE AS FAT32 where there is an explanation about how to do it in Windows, Mac and Linux. 3. Copy the file (alienvault-license.deb) into the root directory of that USB flash drive. 4. HOW TO INTRODUCE THE LICENSE FILE INTO YOUR APPLIANCE 1. Insert the USB flash drive into the appliance you want to update. 2. Open a console terminal and write the following command: ssh root@ip_address IP_address refers to the default IP of your appliance. 3. APPENDIX A - HOW TO FORMAT THE USB FLASH DRIVE AS FAT32 A.1. HOW TO FORMAT A USB ON A LINUX 1. Install the dosfstools package in your Linux to be able to format disk using FAT32 file system. sudo aptitude install dosfstools 2. Insert your USB drive in the USB slot of your computer and check it by writing the following: fdisk -l 3. The last line indicates where the USB thumb drive was connected. 5. Write the following to format it: sudo mkfs.vfat F 32 n My_Memory /dev/sdc1 6. Replace My_Memory with the device name you want. To execute this operation, the device must be unmounted. A.2. HOW TO FORMAT A USB ON A MAC 1. Put the USB into your Mac. 2. Open the Applications folder, which can be located in the Finder - or by pressing cmd and space-bar keys together, then typing "applications". 3. Select the Erase tab, which is found at the top of the large column to the right of the window. 6. Make sure the format drop down box is displaying MS-DOS (FAT). Figure 5. How to format a USB on a MAC: Erase tab 7. Press the erase button and you will have formatted your USB stick - it will then go back to displaying its full capacity as being available. A.3. HOW TO FORMAT A USB ON A WINDOWS 1. Connect the USB flash drive to your computer. 2. Wait for your computer to detect the flash drive. 3. Open the Start menu from the bottom-left of your screen and click on Computer/My Computer. 4. Right-click on the flash drive that you have just connected to your computer. It should appear in the list titled "Devices with Removable Storage" as a removable disk with the drive letter that appears later in the alphabet. 5. Click on Format from the pop-up menu.
