1 «Disaster Recovery» A DOM Restore Guide for Thecus NAS This guide is applicable to the following NAS models N2800, N4800ECO, N5550, N4510U (PRO), N6850, N8850, 10850, N7510, N7710, N8810, N8900, N12000 (PRO), N16000 (PRO) Requirements: USB Drive (8GB or more) A computer with a Microsoft Windows Putty installed on your computer A sick NAS Before you begin To be able to boot via your USB Device, you need to modify the boot order using the BIOS menu. How to Modify BIOS Parameters: Please remove the HDD s, connect the NAS to a monitor (HDMI or VGA) and keyboard, and press F2 to enter the BIOS when prompted (this will usually occur a few seconds after powering on the device). In the BOOT section of the BIOS menu, confirm that the boot sequence has USB HDD in the first position (as in the picture below) and press F10 to save and restart the unit. Certain USB sticks might not be detected in the BIOS, this might not be a problem and in most cases the NAS will be able to boot from the USB stick anyway.

2 Restoring your DOM Step 1 : Create your restore USB Drive Download the DOM restore archive from: Once this file is uncompressed, install Win32DiskImager on your computer (the installation file is included in the archive). Insert your USB drive (at least 4GB) to begin creating a restore environment (be aware that all the data on your USB drive will be erased). Launch Win32DiskImager:

3 Select the USB image file included in the archive. 1 ) Select the Image File 2 ) Make sure that the drive selected is your USB drive 3 ) Start the write process Click on YES to confirm. Win32DiskImager will then begin creating your restore device.

4 Click on OK and unmount your USB device. You are now ready to move onto Step 2. Step 2 : Restore your DOM with SSH By default, the OS on the USB drive will request an IP from a DHCP server. In most cases this is no problem, as a router has DHCP enabled by default. If not, then you could modify the IP settings inside the OS. If you do so, make sure that your computer is on the same LAN subnet. Remove all HDD from your NAS and connect it to your network using LAN 1. Restoring an N5550 NAS with a corrupted DOM Insert the USB drive into a USB 2.0 port on your NAS. (Do not plug it into a USB 3.0 [blue] port, it will not boot)

5 Start your NAS and launch Putty on your computer, wait 1 to 2 minutes before opening an SSH session (this will give the server time to boot).

6 1 ) Enter the NAS Host Name (default is disaster) (or use the IP you assigned manually) 2 ) Confirm by clicking on Open

7 Enter in the login details as above (username: root). (And password: toor). The password will not be displayed, simply confirm it after typing by pressing Enter.

8 You are now connected to the NAS /root directory. The DOM images are available in /DOM Enter the directory (type cd /DOM ) and list the directory contents (type ls ):

9 There are 3 DOM Image files: Thecus_SATA_x86_64_DOM b Thecus_USB_x86_64_DOM b Thecus_SATA_x86_64_DOM b.cdv Thecus_SATA_x86_64_DOM b Is for the following NAS systems: N6850, N8850, N10850, N8900, N12000 (PRO), N16000 (PRO) Thecus_USB_x86_64_DOM b Is for the following NAS systems: N7710 (-G) N8810 (-G) Thecus_SATA_x86_64_DOM b.cdv Is for the following NAS systems: N2800, N4800ECO, N5550, N4510U (PRO), N7510 The NAS in this example is an N5550, so the appropriate DOM image is: Thecus_SATA_x86_64_DOM b.cdv To locate your NAS DOM, use the lsscsi command:

10 The NAS DOM can therefore be found in /dev/sda Now that we know where the NAS DOM is, we can begin restoring it with the dd command: dd if=$file_image of=/dev/sda bs=1k So for an N5550, you will need to type: dd if=thecus_sata_x86_64_dom b.cdv of=/dev/sda bs=1k

11 Press Enter. The process will take a few minutes. The DOM has now been overwritten with the new OS. Type: halt to shut down the unit. Once this is complete, you can remove the USB drive.

12 Remove the USB stick, insert the HDD s and boot the NAS. The NAS should be able to boot again using the factory settings. The default WAN/LAN1 IP will be Use the setup wizard to detect the NAS so you can assign the IP: Windows: MAC OSX:
