SENSORIMOTOR PSYCHOTHERAPY INSTITUTE The Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute (SPI) is an educational organization dedicated to the study and teaching of a somatic approach to clinical psychotherapy practice. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is a body-oriented talking therapy informed by contemporary research on trauma, disassociation, neuroscience, attachment, and development. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy integrates traditional psychotherapy techniques with body-centered interventions specifically developed to treat the effects of both psychological trauma, attachment failure, grief and loss, and developmental arrest. Trainings and workshops in this approach are offered around the world for psychotherapists and allied health professionals. SPI also offers a training program for body workers. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy is a conceptually elegant, powerfully effective body therapy that involves a broad repertoire of somatic interventions specifically designed to help clients tap into the wisdom of their bodies. The SPI Training Program offers ingeniously taught intensive courses for clinicians seeking to deepen their understanding of the body. Martha Stark, M.D. author of Working with Resistance and Modes of Therapeutic Action Celia Grand, LCSW, BCD is a psychotherapist with a private practice in Portland, Maine, specializing in the treatment of adults and couples. Trained in both EMDR and Psychosynthesis, she is an EMDR facilitator and consultant. Celia is well-known throughout Maine and Southern New Hampshire for her expertise in trauma and the uses of both EMDR and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. Andrew Harkin, M.D. is a registered Medical Doctor (University College Dublin), and Psychotherapist. He has been interested in the relationship between psyche and soma for many years, and has a special fascination with the emerging rapprochement between neuroscience and psychotherapy. Andrew is currently works with the Institute of Psychosocial Medicine in Dublin, Ireland, teaches in the UK, Ireland, and Europe, and maintains a private practice. Brigitta Karelis, M.A. holds the degree of Diplom in Paedagogik, a study that combines social work, lifelong learning, and psychology, and an M.A. in Somatic Psychology. She has worked with drug-addicted youth, political refugees, mentally ill, and hospice clients. She serves on the faculty at Naropa, is an instructor in the Buddhist meditation, and maintains a private practice in Boulder, Colorado. Justine K. Polevoy, MFT is a licensed Somatic psychotherapist in Berkeley, California. She is on core faculty for the Somatic Psychology Program at John F. Kennedy University. Her private practice, Embodied Psychotherapy, in Berkeley, Ca, specializes in assisting individuals in their recovery from trauma and supporting their development of a somatically resourced sense of self. Anne Westcott, is a psychotherapist with over 20 years experience working with children and families. Her commitment to children and caregivers impacted by trauma has led her to explore new body oriented approaches to enhance arousal regulation in traumatized family systems. Anne provides education and consultation on trauma, dissociation, attachment, and arousal regulation and is a supervisor at the Trauma Center in Boston MA. Anne received her MSW from Columbia University in 1987. Ame Cutler, Ph.D. Candidate, is completing her doctoral studies in clinical psychology at Saybrook University. She is certified in the Hakomi Method and brings years of experience in a variety of body-oriented modalities to her work with individuals and couples. In working with those who suffer the aftermath of relational trauma, she combines interests in somatic psychology, mindfulness, and indigenous wisdom to assist them in building a safer relationship with their own bodies. BODYWORK FACULTY: Michael Broas, LMT is an instructor at the Florida School of Massage, in Gainesville, Florida, where he teaches various massage modalities and is also available for one on one counseling with the students. He completed the SPI Bodyworker Training in 2003 and shortly thereafter joined our staff. Michael also maintains a private practice in Gainesville, specializing working with trauma survivors.

SPI Faculty Pat Ogden, Ph.D., has been a pioneer in somatic psychology and the treatment of trauma and developmental issues since the late 1970's. Trained in a wide variety of somatic approaches, she is a Structural Integrator (Rolf Method), a co-founder of the Hakomi Institute. Pat is the founder and director of the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute and a frequent speaker at conferences internationally. Kekuni Minton, Ph.D., is a founding trainer of SPI and a faculty member at Naropa University. His doctoral thesis in clinical psychology focused on somatic relational therapy, and he has special interests in meditation and cultural trauma. He has presented at a variety of conferences nationally and internationally. Christina Dickinson, CACII, is a founding trainer of SPI, a certified addictions counselor in Colorado, certified in both Hakomi and Focused Expressive Psychotherapy. Trained in a variety of treatment modalities, she teaches internationally on the subjects of trauma and addiction, consults for The Meadows Treatment Center and The Life Healing Center for Trauma, and maintains a private practice in Boulder Colorado. Janina Fisher, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in Watertown, MA, an instructor and supervisor at The Trauma Center, an EMDR Approved Consultant, and past president of the New England Society for the Treatment of Trauma and Dissociation. Janina is has been an invited speaker at numerous conferences, including the Cape Cod Institute, Harvard Medical School Summer Series and Conference on Women, International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals, and the Psychotraumatology Institute of Europe. Janina is Assistant Director of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute and Director of SPI s Teacher in Training Program. Lana Epstein, M.A., LICSW, is an EMDRIA-approved consultant in EMDR, an ASCH-approved consultant in Hypnosis, a Consultant at the Trauma Center, and former Board member of NESTTD. Integrating a number of therapeutic models, Lana presents internationally and maintains a private practice in Lexington MA. focusing on adult survivors of childhood trauma. Joe Gillan, M.A. received his master s in Transpersonal Psychology from Naropa University and is a psychiatric consultant at Good Samaritan hospital in Lafayette, CO. serves on the faculty of Naropa University in the graduate department of Somatic Psychology, leads groups for cancer survivors, and maintains a private practice in Boulder Colorado. Since re-living of trauma often occurs in the form of physical sensations, which, in turn, precipitate intense trauma-related emotions of terror and helplessness, learning how to manage and uncouple physical sensations from trauma-based emotions has emerged as one of the essential aspects of the effective treatment of PTSD. Pat Ogden (originator of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy) is the undisputed master for teaching clinicians how to work with physical sensations to help people beyond their trauma. For me, her work has opened up a whole new dimension of effective therapy. Bessel van der Kolk, M.D. author of Traumatic Stress History of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy In the 1970's, Pat Ogden became interested in the correlation between her clients' disconnection from their bodies, their physical patterns, and their psychological issues. As both a psychotherapist and body therapist, she was inspired to join somatic therapy and psychotherapy into a comprehensive method for healing this disconnection. SPI offered its first course in the early 1980's under the name Hakomi Bodywork. Influenced by leaders such as Emilie Conrad, Ruth Lanius, Peter Levine, Peter Melchior, Ellert Nijenhuis, Stephen Porges, Allan Schore, Dan Siegel, Martha Stark, Kathy Steele, Onno van der Hart, Bessel van der Kolk, Ed Tronick, Philip Bromberg, Jaak Panksepp, and Ken Wilber, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy draws from somatic therapies, neuroscience, attachment theory, and cognitive approaches, as well as from the Hakomi Method, a gentle psychotherapeutic approach pioneered by Ron Kurtz. SPI conducts trainings throughout the world, and has gained international acclaim over the past twenty-eight years.

SPI Advisory Board Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Training The training program consists of three levels, each a prerequisite for the next. However, since each is a comprehensive training in its own right, students may take only Part I, or just Parts I and II, or all three. Treatment of Trauma Trauma can result in a bewildering array of symptoms: emotions of fear, shame and rage; numbing; intrusive feelings and images; affect dysregulation; negative beliefs about the self. Research findings indicate that trauma is largely 'remembered' non-verbally and that its effects reflect a body and nervous system primed for future threat. Narrative processing techniques can be helpful but insufficient in resolving these body-based effects of trauma. The Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Training for the Treatment of Trauma presents simple body-oriented interventions for tracking, naming and safely exploring trauma-related autonomic dysregulation, creating new competencies, and restoring a somatic sense of self. Students learn effective, accessible interventions for working with the legacy of trauma in the body: with the lost capacity for effective action, blocked cognitive and emotional processing, and with the fragmented sense of self experienced by so many traumatized individuals. The length of this training is approximately 90 hours. David V. Credit is awarded on a session-by-session basis, with full attendance required for the sessions attended. Partial session credit is not available. The processing fee is $50.00 per person and covers all scheduled sessions of the Course. Application forms and other information will be available at the initial training session. Development, Attachment and Trauma Sensorimotor Psychotherapy identifies two general kinds of interrelated psychological issues: developmental and traumatic. Developmental issues result from disturbed early attachment relationships that lead to limiting beliefs about oneself and the world, while post-traumatic stress disorder results from overwhelming experience that remains unintegrated. When combined with unresolved trauma, early attachment disturbances can lead to a wide variety of adult relational problems. This course builds on the curriculum of the Training for the Treatment of Trauma, emphasizing the interactive relationships between traumatic, attachment, and developmental issues and how to provide effective treatment given their inevitable intertwining. The length of this training is approximately 185 hours. Prerequisite: Training for the Treatment of Trauma Curriculum Reading Assignments: Each training has it's own training manual to accompany course material. Writing Assignments: Workbooks are provided that contain study exercises and written homework designed to facilitate application of course content. Peer Partner Assignments: Students team up with one other student in the training for educational purposes to practice elements of the method. Study Groups: Students form study groups for the purpose of studying together and supporting each other s learning. Translating the Language of the Body How Attachment Experiences are Organized in Mind and Body Working with State-Specific Memory Therapeutic Use of States of Consciousness Body Reading Characterological Barriers to Adaptive Action Somatic Transference and Countertransference Working with Cognitive, Emotional and Sensorimotor Action Tendencies Attachment Issues: Dependency and Differentiation Early Attachment and Character Strategies Modulation Patterns and Correlation with Trauma Somatic Resources for Character and Attachment Issues Working with Regressed Ego States The Therapeutic Relationship, Attunement, and the Body Systems Theory: Developmental and Traumatic Restoring a Somatic Sense of Self Only one therapy I know of reaches as deeply into the body as it does into the mind, and by reaching for both, touches the soul. Certification Skills Training leading to Advanced Practitioner certification Teaching Methods used in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Trainings Lectures: Didactic material is taught through lectures accompanied by slides. Exercises: Roleplay and practice exercises are designed to give students the opportunity to learn somatic techniques experientially. Demonstration: Faculty members demonstrate techniques through client role-play, student vignettes, and review of video sessions with clients. Discussion: Both large and small group discussion offer opportunities to explore topics in depth and ask questions. Consultation: Case consultation is provided by instructors to facilitate integrating Sensorimotor Psychotherapy interventions into clinical practice. Faculty provide consultation regarding Sensorimotor Psychotherapy interventions only, not comprehensive client or case consultation or supervision. Feedback: Faculty observe practice exercises and offer feed back to increase student mastery of skills Online Video Library: Tapes of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy therapy sessions and trainings with Pat Ogden as instructor are available for students to review at home. The focus of this training is the refinement of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy skills at each stage of the therapy process, leading toward certification as an Advanced Practitioner. Certified Advanced Practitioners may apply to become Approved Consultants, enabling them to provide individual and group consultation to graduates of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy trainings. Each module includes experiential exercises, practice sessions, video assessment, review of homework assignments, demonstrations and group and 1:1 feedback for each student. The length of this training is approximately 140 hours. Certification is an individualized process for each trainee, and attainment of all the necessary skills for certification status may require work beyond this training. Pre-requisite: Training for the Treatment of Trauma and Development, Attachment and Trauma Training. Curriculum Refinement of technical skills through demonstration, exercises and roleplay. Consultation: group and individual consultation. Written assignments, including video tape analysis, self-assessment of skills, and other individualized assignments as needed. Attention to each student's character strategies, countertransference tendencies, and trauma-related patterns as they affect certification. Experiential exercises, individual processing, as well as relevant didactic material and discussion, will be included. Monthly videotape review of each student's sessions. Conference with faculty to assess progress. An advisor from the SPI faculty will be assigned to each student for the duration of the training.

Training for Body Therapists: The Body as a Resource for Healing Trauma and Character Strategies This course emphasizes developing somatic resources and is designed for body therapists, including those who practice massage, Rolfing, structural integration, acupressure, acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, movement, Trager, and physical and occupational therapy. Skills for understanding developmental and traumatic issues and their impact on the body will be addressed. Interventions are both taught didactically and experientially with both table and floor practice. The length of this training is approximately 108 hours. Curriculum Identifying or developing somatic resources that help to heal the aftereffects of trauma, such as: fear, anxiety/panic, pain, etc. Developing somatic resources that strengthen resiliency in the wake of traumatic world events, such as terrorism and war. Utilizing specific somatic resources for particular kinds of trauma, such as sexual abuse, accidents, war, disasters, etc. Identifying character strategies through body reading, and learn to implement missing body resources. Creating a therapeutic relationship utilizing psychodynamic principles, tracking and contacting skills, contracts, boundary work, somatic transference and countertransference. Maintaining contact: containing and supporting the client's emotional This training is the most transformative process in which I have participated since I studied with Fritz Perls and Ida Rolf, thirty years ago. Peter Melchior Senior Instructor, Guild for Structural Integration TRAUMA AND THE BODY: A Sensorimotor Approach to Psychotherapy By Pat Ogden, Kekuni Minton, and Clare Pain Forewords by Daniel J. Siegel, M.D. and Bessel van der Kolk, M.D. In Trauma and the Body, Pat Ogden and her colleagues offer us deep experiential insights that can awaken our minds to the wisdom of the body...with beautifully articulated applications of neurobiology extensively referencing state-of-the-art scientific literature, the authors create an exquisite theoretical framework...[they] have taken on the important challenge of putting words to a world without words. -Daniel Siegel, author of The Developing Mind. "This is the book the field of psychotraumatology has been waiting for! Clinicians at last have a major practical and theoretical source for more fully understanding the central role of fixed sensorimotor patterns in survivors...ogden and her colleagues masterfully demonstrate how to use the survivor's physical fixation in traumatic experiences as an essential avenue to effective trauma treatment. Onno van der Hart, PhD Professor of Psychopathology of Chronic Traumatization, Utrecht University, The Netherlands "Pat Ogden's outstanding work in sensorimotor psychotherapy focuses not just on the devastating effects of trauma-induced alterations on mind, but also on body and brain. Asserting that the body has been left out of the "talking cure," she offers a scholarly review of very recent advances in the trauma, neurobiology, developmental, and psychodynamic literatures that strongly suggests that bodily-based behaviors, affects, and cognitions must be brought to the forefront of the clinical encounter. Amply filled with extremely interesting case material, this gifted therapist's creative work on somaticallyfocused treatment is essential reading for clinicians of all schools of psychotherapy." Allan N. Schore, Ph.D., Dept. of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine "Therapists of all orientations will find in this volume a range of methods that will expand their capacity to offer a more embodied healing to traumatized patients. I highly recommend this work." -Christine Courtois, Ph.D., author of Healing the Incest Wound, Recollections of Sexual Abuse, and co-author of Treating Complex Stress Disorders
