About the Congress Following the Fire Brigades Union report on firefighter fatalities, the difficulties of safeguarding firefighters in demanding operational environments has been brought into sharp focus. Against a backdrop of dwindling resources, increasingly complex problems presented by the built environment and the need to transform service delivery, has firefighter safety become a reduced priority or fallen off the radar altogether? As firefighters face a growing threat from extreme climatic events alongside a range of potential terrorist threats, are they trained and knowledgeable enough to meet these demands? Are the dangers presented by modern methods of construction beyond the capability range of those attending such incidents? Do the oft overlooked risks of fading building stock present an even bigger danger as traditional firefighting skills have not been passed on? Or, are we overlooking the technological and intellectual knowledge base at our disposal? What of research, training and shared knowledge? What can institutions, organisations and the supply industry add to the collective understanding of the firefighter? The Congress is not intended to dwell on perceived failures but to recognise opportunities for sharing knowledge and understanding across the whole fire sector. Public and firefighter safety will not just be considered in terms of firefighting operations and personal protective equipment (although pivotal), but in wider terms of passive and active fire protection in buildings, improving regulations and standards, and interacting with the fire engineering and wider fire research community. Delegates can also attend Fire Crucible is a consultation concept led by former CFOs Charlie Hendry and John Bonney offering suppliers seeking access to the fire sector high-level feedback from a panel of distinguished Fire Service experts. Delegates and exhibitors of the Fire Congress can also sign up to take part in a round table briefing on Fire Crucible, taking place in the afternoon of the main conference. This conference is designed for Chief Fire officers, Principal officers, and Brigade members Also highly relevant for: Local authority councillors Incident command Civil servants from Communities and Local Government Health and safety professionals and suppliers Chief executives and system developers from command and control system providers As the bigger picture comes into focus, what emerges is that firefighter safety is a fundamental prerequisite for public safety and as brigades such as Greater Manchester have shown, the future of firefighting and fire protection lies in a convergence of traditional firefighting operations with understanding and insight coming from industry innovation, plus a wide range of expert input on the built environment. The Congress is unique in that speakers will give short, sharp briefings followed by a question to challenge the audience. A short discussion will follow each presentation which in turn will set up the afternoon s panel debate. There is ample opportunity for strategic networking with key stakeholders and decision makers across the day. Continuous professional development Professionals within the social care sector are required to undertake Continuous Professional Development (CPD). FireCrucible: A Test of the Most Decisive Kind The fire market is a challenging place made all the more so by often fragmented and inconsistent customer demands. Whether you are an established supplier or entering the market for the first time, gaining clear, coherent and client-oriented feedback on your offering is crucial in gaining a competitive advantage. Until recently this was hard to come by, but the emergence of FireCrucible changes that. FireCrucible is an opportunity for companies who either have a product or service, or wish to test a concept at an early stage, to receive structured feedback and advice from a panel of informed subject matter experts. Good research and development advice from the sector is hard to come by wouldn t it be good to have direct and focused access to some of the leaders in the field who could turn out to be your customers? This is what FireCrucible can do for you. The FireCrucible is a process of analysis and inquiry. In an allotted period of time companies are invited to present their ideas or solutions to the Expert Panel. The Panel uses a structured approach that looks at five elements: Problem Identification Solution Building Customer Value Substitution & Competition Target Markets The Panel looks at the distinctiveness of the solution, whether it represents incremental change or a whole new approach to a problem, and the overall value created by the synergy between the five elements. Following the inquiry the company receive both immediate verbal feedback from the panel and also a structured report which provides more detailed analysis and recommendations. FireCrucible was conceived in the UK but is now assisting companies in North America to improve their offering and add value to their customers. FireCrucible presented by Charlie Hendry Director, Alchemy Management Solutions Ltd John Bonney Director, Alchemy Management Solutions Ltd
