Module Description In this module, students will learn the fundamental concepts of business intelligence, and how to carry out a business analysis of companies information needs, how to extract and collate data from multiple sources, analyse them and produce reports that meet these needs. Students will be taught different analytical information reporting techniques and use them to produce relevant reports Module Objectives Upon completing this module, students should be able to: Understand what is Business Intelligence and the BI environment Use the technologies supporting BI e.g. data warehouse, ETL tools and Reports Design and build different types of BI reports Design reports with filters, sorting, etc Extract, Transform and Load data Develop a simple dimensional model Following are the content related abilities strengthened by the curricular processes of the module: Importance of Business Intelligence Recognize the need and usefulness of business intelligence to organizations Understand the benefits of BI Identify the different information needs of different levels of management within an organization Explain what are the key components in a BI environment Understand the different technologies that support BI Examine and analyze how businesses uses the BI for decision making and strategic planning Describe and explain the different job roles in a BI environment. Enterprise Reporting and Data Analysis Recognize what are the different types of data analysis that are useful for BI reporting Analyze the information needs of management and how BI can assist in the decision making process
Understand the importance and purpose of visual presentation of information such as graphs, carts, tables Evaluate the different ways of summarizing data using BI tools Understand the importance of customizing reports t Enterprise Analysis and Statistics Identify, analyse business requirements and propose designs of possible BI solutions to business problems or opportunities Understand how to extract key information from a large volume of data Carry out basic statistics such as measures of central tendency Carry out business analysis of user requirements and use BI tools to analyse information to meet user needs Describe what is a dimensional model and the purpose of the model Understand the purpose of using a star schema for building a dimensional model Construct a dimensional model Compare the differences between OLAP and OLTP data models Describe what is an OLAP cube and create and analyse reports from an OLAP cube Module Assessment This module is assessed as follows: Daily Grade 40% Understanding Tests - 60 %
