Republic Polytechnic School of Information and Communications Technology C355 Business Intelligence Module Curriculum This document addresses the content related abilities, with reference to the module. Abilities of thinking, learning, problem solving, and teamwork, communication, debating and defending are addressed by the system wide curricular practices at the institute. Module Description In this module, students will learn the fundamental concepts of business intelligence, and how to carry out a business analysis of companies information needs, how to extract and collate data from multiple sources, analyse them and produce reports that meet these needs. Students will be taught different analytical information reporting techniques and use them to produce relevant reports Module Objectives Upon completing this module, students should be able to: Understand what is Business Intelligence and the BI environment Use the technologies supporting BI e.g. data warehouse, ETL tools and Reports Design and build different types of BI reports Design reports with filters, sorting,etc Extract, Transform and Load data Develop a simple dimensional model Following are the content related abilities strengthened by the curricular processes of the module: Importance of Business Intelligence Recognize the need and usefulness of business intelligence to organizations Understand the benefits of BI Identify the different information needs of different levels of management within an organization Explain what are the key components in a BI environment Understand the different technologies that support BI Examine and analyze how businesses uses the BI for decision making and strategic planning Describe and explain the different job roles in a BI environment. Enterprise Reporting and Data Analysis Recognize what are the different types of data analysis that are useful for BI reporting Analyze the information needs of management and how BI can assist in the decision making process

Understand the importance and purpose of visual presentation of information such as graphs, carts, tables Evaluate the different ways of summarizing data using BI tools Understand the importance of customizing reports t Enterprise Analysis and Statistics Identify, analyse business requirements and propose designs of possible BI solutions to business problems or opportunities Understand how to extract key information from a large volume of data Carry out basic statistics such as measures of central tendency Carry out business analysis of user requirements and use BI tools to analyse information to meet user needs Describe what is a dimensional model and the purpose of the model Understand the purpose of using a star schema for building a dimensional model Construct a dimensional model Compare the differences between OLAP and OLTP data models Describe what is an OLAP cube and create and analyse reports from an OLAP cube Module Assessment This module is assessed as follows: Daily Grade 40% Understanding Tests - 60 %

graphs and charts Understand the importance of business requirement which provide the basis for creating queries for reporting Understand the concept of a query. Able to create simple queries - filtering and sorting data - creating new columns with an expression - grouping and summarising data in a query Understand the business requirement for providing summarised reports Able to create summary table using new computed column with a BI tool Understand the business requirement for the need to create reports from different data tables Understand the concepts of data table joins (inner, left outer, right outer) and its applications Understanding the importance of customising reports for business users Able to transform data into more user-friendly format and categories using Recoding technique Understand how the extract key information from the large volume of data

Understand the concept of Measures of Central Tendency (eg, Mean, Mode, Median, Standard Deviation) and use them to analyse key information about the profile of large volume of data. Understand the need for interactivity in Business Intelligence reporting Able to create reports with prompts that provide different perspective for analysis. Describe the process of gathering user s requirements for organizational reporting needs Able to analyze information in a systematic manner Define what a dimensional model Understand the purpose of a dimensional model Able to describe the concepts of facts and dimensions in a dimensional model Understand the Star schema of Dimensional Model and concept of data mart Able to construct a dimension models using Kimball s 4 step

design process Understand the meaning of OLAP as compared with OLTP Describe what is OLAP cube Able to create and analyse reports from a OLAP cube Able to apply what they have learnt about different analysis techniques to analyse a small case study. Total = 15 Problems = 90 hours 60 30 0
