1 POWER BI FOR BUSINESS ANALYSTS AND POWER USERS 3 DAYS PBI365: Data Analytics and Reporting with Power BI AUDIENCE FORMAT COURSE DESCRIPTION Business Analysts, Statisticians and Data Scientists Instructor-led training with hands-on labs Data Analytics and Reporting with Power BI is a fast-paced 3-day training course designed to get students up to speed on building and deploying custom solutions using Microsoft s Power BI platform. Students will work through in-depth, hands-on lab exercises to reinforce the benefits of using a project-based approach for creating custom BI solutions. The course also teaches students about the tools and techniques that are used to move a Power BI project through its lifecycle to the point where the project can be deployed into a production tenant in the Office 365 environment. Students will learn what can be accomplished with the Power BI service using just a browser as well as which types of project work must be completed using. Students will learn how to use Power Query to import and transform data as it loads into a project s data model. The course also teaches students how to use Power Pivot and the DAX programming language to extend the data model to support rich data analytics and reporting. Students will additionally learn how to create reports and dashboards as well as how to deploy a project using dashboard sharing and using organizational content packs. STUDENT PREREQUISITES Along the way, students will learn how to create and manage custom Power BI solutions which analyze and report on data extracted from SQL databases and SharePoint lists in an on-premises environment. Students will also learn how to create reports and dashboards which target mobile devices. The course concludes by examining how to integrate Power BI together with Excel 2016 and Excel Online and introducing students to Course Modules the new preview support for using the R programming language to build custom visualizations for the reports and dashboards in a custom Power BI solution. Students should have prior experience working with Microsoft Excel and be familiar with navigating around within the Office 365 and Excel Online environment. 2 MODULE 01: Introduction to the Power BI Platform MODULE 02: Creating and Publishing Projects using Power BI Desktop MODULE 03: Using the Power Query Features of This module introduces the basic terminology and Business Intelligence features supported by the Power BI platform. Students will learn about the Power BI service and the self-service BI tools including, Power Query, PowerPivot and Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) Language. The module discusses how to create an isolated development environment for building and testing project that target the Power BI platform. The module explains the fundamental concepts in Power BI and the role of workspaces, dashboard, reports and datasets. Students will learn how to get up and running in the Power BI service by importing datasets and creating reports and dashboards. Introduction to the Power BI Platform Creating a Power BI Test Environment Introduction to the Power BI Service Understanding Power BI Workspaces Creating Datasets, Reports and Dashboards Loading a Sample Content Pack Hands-on Lab: Getting Up and Running with the Power BI Service Exercise 1: Create a new Office 365 Trial Tenant Exercise 2: Upload a Workbook with Sample Data to OneDrive for Business Exercise 3: Configure Multiple Users with Power BI Pro Licenses Exercise 4: Use the Power BI Service to Import a New Dataset Exercise 5: Create a New Power BI Report with Multiple Pages Exercise 6: Create and Share a Power BI Dashboard This module provides an introduction to and discusses where this tools is used within the lifecycle of a Power BI project. Students will learn how to use Power Query to import data into a project as well as how to get started with data modeling using Power Pivot and DAX. The module provides an introductory look at creating reports with the report designer and explains how Power BI Desktop relies on the PBIX file format to publish datasets and reports to the Power BI service. The module concludes with a discusses of Power BI Gateways and explains the scenarios where it s necessary to use a gateway to enable the refreshing of datasets which have been created from onpremises databases and SharePoint lists. The Power BI Project Lifecycle Getting Started with Using Power Query to Import Data Using Power Pivot to Model Data Publishing Projects with Configuring Auto Refresh with Power BI Gateways Hands-on Lab: Working with Exercise 1: Installing and Configuring Exercise 2: Importing Data into using Power Query Exercise 3: Modeling Tables in a Dataset using Power Pivot Exercise 4: Create a Report using Exercise 5: Publishing a PBIX File to the Power BI Service This module introduces the core concepts of creating and designing queries in using the features of Power Query. Students will learn how to use Power Query to import data from a variety of sources including databases, Excel spreadsheets, web pages and SharePoint lists. Students will also learn how Power Query can be used to reshape data during the import process by splitting a column with delimited values and combining multiple columns into a single column. You will also learn to perform powerful table operations such as merging columns and appending rows from multiple data sources as well as transposing, pivoting and un-pivoting the rows and columns in a source table. 3 MODULE 04: Using the Power Pivot Features of This module introduces students to the PowerPivot features and data modeling tools available when working with. Students will learn about the various ways that can be used to model data for richer analytics and reporting. The module discusses how to get up and running with the DAX programming language as well as how to extend tables in a dataset with Calculated Columns and Measures. Data Modeling with PowerPivot and DAX Creating Calculated Columns Integrating Lookup Tables Creating Measures Hands-on Lab: Using the Power Pivot Features of Exercise 1: Hiding and Formatting Columns in the Data Model Exercise 2: Extending the Data Model by Creating Calculated Columns Exercise 3: Extending the Data Model with a Lookup Table Exercise 4: Extending the Data Model by Creating Measures MODULE 05: Extending Datasets to Support Time Intelligence This module begins by introducing concepts and terms used when modeling a dataset using time dimensions. Students will learn why and how to create a specialized calendar tables to track time dimensions as well as how to design a time-dimensional hierarchy which allows users to drill down into more specific regions of time while analyzing data. The second half of the module focuses on writing DAX expressions which provide rich analytic capabilities to calculate year-to-date totals and rolling averages and to provide drill down capabilities to the level of month, week or day. Understanding Evaluation Contexts Creating a Time Dimension Table Understanding DAX Time Intelligence Support Working with DAX Time Intelligence Functions Hands-on Lab: : Extending a Data Model with Time Intelligence Exercise 1: Adding a Calendar Dimension Table Exercise 2: Creating Visuals using the Calendar Table Exercise 3: Creating Measures using DAX Time Intelligence Functions Exercise 4: Creating Measures to Monitor Growth in Sales Revenue MODULE 06: Designing Reports in Power BI Desktop The begins by explaining the purpose and usage of each of the visualization types that are built into the Power BI platform. Students will learn how to apply filters to visuals, to report pages and to an entire report. The module also discusses how to design interactive reports by using slicers and by using other visuals that allow for interactive cross filtering. The module also examines the intermediate to advanced aspects of report design within a project including writing the underlying DAX expressions and creating visuals to display a ranked list such as the top 5 selling products or the top 10 customers. The module concludes by explaining how to publish projects to deploy reports and their underlying dataset to a workspace within the Power BI service. 4 MODULE 07: Designing and Deploying Dashboards This module explains the process of designing dashboards by adding dashboard tiles using visuals in a report. The module also explains the Power BI dashboard support for natural language queries as well as when and how to make use of the Q&A search box. Students will two different techniques for deploying dashboards in a production environment. First, students will learn how to use dashboard sharing make dashboards accessible to other users in the organization. Students also learn how to create and manage Organizational Content Packs which provide a richer mechanism to deploy dashboards, reports and datasets in a production environment. Creating and Designing Dashboards Natural Language Queries and the Q&A Search Box Sharing Dashboards with Other Users Deploying Dashboards using Content Packs Hands-on Lab: Creating and Deploying Dashboards in Power BI Exercise 1: Create the Product Sales Analysis Dashboard Exercise 2: Share the Product Sales Analysis Dashboard Exercise 3: Create the Regional Sales 2015 Dashboard Exercise 4: Deploy a Dashboard using an Organizational Content Pack MODULE 08: Designing Dashboards for Mobile Devices One of Power BI s greatest strengths is the ease of which you can create dashboards that are instantly accessible to tablets and mobile devices such as iphones, ipads, Android devices and Windows 10 phone. This module explains how the Power BI platform supports tablets and mobile devices using an architecture based on device-specific apps. Students will learn which mobile platforms are currently supported as well as the steps involved with installing the Power BI app on a mobile device in order to access a dashboard. The module concludes with a discussion of dashboard design principles that are important to keep in mind when targeting mobile devices such as an iphone, Android or Windows 10 phone. Students will learn about the integration points between Power BI, Excel 2016 and Excel Online. The module also includes a discussion of creating charts and graphs on top of an Excel data model as well as common practices in creating Excel workbooks which provides interactive dashboards. 5 MODULE 10: Using R to Create Custom Visualizations In December of 2015, Microsoft introduced preview support in the Power BI platform to integrate custom scripts written in the R programming language into a custom solution. This module begins with a quick primer on R and an explanation of why R has become so popular due to the growing number of libraries available for statistical analysis and the generation of high-quality graphics. Students will learn how to install the R runtime environment as well as how to use the report designer in to create visuals which execute R scripts and display the execution results on reports and dashboard. The module concludes with a discussion of how to configure automatic refresh for datasets that have been created through the execution of R scripts.
