SAA Simulator 1. Introduction Figure 1.1: SAASim. Measurand s SAA Simulator (SAASim) was designed and developed to provide a low cost accessory to verify Data Logger programs. The SAASim simulates one to many SAAs allowing customer program verification when physical SAAs are not available. SAASIM simulates models 1, 2, and 3 SAAs as well as magnetometers and Measurand PZs. It is not uncommon for the purchased SAAs to be in the field while the Data Logger or Earth Station are at the office waiting to be setup. The SAASim allows the Earth Station or Data Logger to be verified for the specific SAAs before going out to the field. 1.1 Description The SAASim comes with five 5-pin terminal blocks representing up to 5 SAAs. If more SAAs need to be simulated, then more simulators will be needed or more wires can be added to the SAASim wiring harness. When using an SAA232 or SAAFPU only one 5-pin terminal block is required. When using an SAA232-5, all 5-pin terminal blocks can be used at once. When there are several SAA232-5s for one setup then more SAASims or expanding the current SAASim will be required. Contact Measurand for further information on expanding the current SAASim. Measurand encourages the practice of labeling all SAA232s and SAA232-5 channels with the SAA Serial Numbers as they were setup in the Software. For further assistance with Measurand Applications and Utilities please review the SAA Software manual available on Measurand s website. February 2015 1
2. Using SAASim There are several related uses for the SAASim. Its primary function is to allow for the setup, testing and verification of LoggerNet and SAACR_FileGenerator. In turn, this allows for the testing of the auto recording and conversion. SAACR_DataChecker can be used to verify good data is received with the LoggerNet setup. The SAASim can also be used to practice using Measurand s Applications and Utilities without using real data. 2.1 SAACR_FileGenerator & LoggerNet Have the Earth Station connected to a PC. Plug an SAASim 5-pin terminal block into both SAA232s as shown. The SAASim will work with any setup available from Measurand. Figure 2.1: SAASim connected to two SAA232s in an Earth Station with a CR800 Logger. 1. Open SAACR_FileGenerator and create a file for the two SAAs. Check the COM ports, the Data Logger type (for this example: CR800). Physically label where the specific SAAs are setup to be read from so that in the field the appropriate SAA is connected to the appropriate SAA232. In the field, if the wrong SAA is connected to any of the SAA232s then no data will be recorded. If the SAAs are already installed then it is vital to know what SAA is where. 2 February 2015
SAA Simulator Figure 2.2: The SAA232 with SAA1 (Serial Number 67091) must be connected to COM Port 1 on this Earth Station while the SAA232 with SAA2 (Serial Number 62189) must be connected to COM Port 2 on this Earth Station. 2. Click Generate File, name the file and click OK. 3. Now continue to the SAACR_Raw2DataConfigurator tab. The SAAs from the previous screen are already inserted. Don t forget! The Data Logger Name entered here MUST be the same name given to this CR Data Logger in LoggerNet. (Step 4) Complete filling out the information and click Generate Config File. Figure 2.3: These settings are for Auto Conversion and can be changed. February 2015 3
4. Open LoggerNet. (For assistance see SAA Software Manual Section 4) Setup the CR Data Logger. Compile the Main Program created in SAACR_FileGenerator. Upload program files to the CR Data Logger. File Management. 5. Test data collection from the CR Data Logger. SAA Software Manual Section 4.2.1 6. Test the Automated Data Collection. SAA Software Manual Section 4.2.2 7. SAA Simulator A. Troubleshooting Due to the SAASim s nature, if any issues arise they would be from the Hardware or Software setup. The SAASim is unable to provide bad or no data. To check that data is being captured by the Data Logger, the.dat file can be reviewed in either a spreadsheet program, SAACR_DataChecker (SAA Software Manual Appendix B) or LoggerNet s View Pro. In a spreadsheet, all of the column data for the SAA segments should be non-zero, except those segments that include magnetometer data. Figure A. 1: Opened as a comma delimited file. In SAACR_DataChecker, there should be colored columns, no black. If the SAA contains one or more magnetometers, make sure that the Hide Magnetometer Data checkbox is checked as the data from magnetometers typically contains some zero values. Figure A. 2: Can open several SAA.cal files at once. If there are zeros (or black lines) in the SAACR_DataChecker view, check the Hardware setup and then check the Software setup. In LoggerNet s View Pro, as in the spreadsheet, there should be no zeros for all segments without magnetometers. February 2015 5
