REPORTING CAPABILITIES Desire2Learn offers robust and insightful reporting capabilities within Desire2Learn Learning Environment in the following ways: Reporting via the Reporting tool Reporting within individual tools The features and benefits of each of these reporting capabilities are highlighted on the pages that follow. Desire2Learn Learning Environment Reporting Capabilities The Reporting tool provides a useful interface through which Park Hill administrators can create reports which detail system activity. The Reporting tool enables users to select a wide variety of data on which to report. These reports can be shaped through the use of filters and other parameters. Reporting Three sample reports produced by Desire2Learn Learning Environment The data available for Desire2Learn Learning Environment to report on is contained in datasets. Datasets are predefined categories of data. 1
Desire2Learn Learning Environment DataSets Examples of these categories are users or sessions. Once a user has chosen a dataset to report on, they can then select a render type. Render types define the format of a report, the available render types are: Area graph Bar graph Line graph Pie graph Preview table Users can also narrow down reports by adding custom filters. Filters constrain the information to only show specified and relevant results. Datasets Include: User Sessions: how long users have been logged in for. Users: lists users and enrollment information User Auditors: lists parent or guardians for each student Roles: types of roles in the learning environment Tools: which tools are active in courses Org Unit Types: types of departments, schools, master courses Org units: Shows all courses in the system Login Attempts: shows number of logins by day, week, month Enrollments: enrollment information for every user Enrollment Log: changes to enrollments and by whom Final Grades: list of all final grades in all courses 2
Tool-Specific Reports Reports can also be generated for the following tools or features within Desire2Learn Learning Environment: Content For each topic, course content statistics display the number of unique visitors and average time spent by each visitor. A user who visits multiple times is only counted once. Content Statistics Discussions Statistics give you an overview of user activity in your discussion topics and forums. You can use this information to determine which topics are stimulating conversations and which are not, or who is posting frequently and who is hanging back. As the semester unfolds, you can use statistics to pinpoint topics in need of conversation-starters and to follow the participation levels of different users, so you can send email reminders to users who have not been participating, or ask overly vocal users to slow down and give others a chance to contribute. When the semester is finished, statistics help you identify the topics that were most effective and the ones you might want to omit or modify for the next course. 3
Discussions Statistics Quizzes Inside the quizzes tool, teachers can access tool-specific Reports and Statistics to view statistics and class averages based on individual tests, and these statistics can even drill down to the individual question level to see question by question statistics, and even how frequently wrong answers are selected. The quiz statistics tool is also equipped with search functionality so that data can be retrieved based on individual students. You can export quiz statistics and reports to a CSV file for data analysis. These reports can also be viewed online (such as the quiz image shown further below) or exported to a csv file for external manipulation. The CSV file contains all pertinent information on the quiz so that you can query, sort and evaluate the data without being connected to the learning management system. USER STATS User Stats CSV files contain performance data by user, including: the user s Org Defined ID, username, first name, last name, quiz score, the value the quiz was graded out of, the user s score as a percentage, and the class average. QUESTIONS STATS Question Stats CSV files contain data about the average score on questions by points and percentage. The question title, text, bonus status, and difficulty level are included in the CSV file so that data can be analyzed without referring back to the learning management system. QUESTION DETAILS Question Details CSV files contain detailed information about each question in the quiz, including a list of 4
all of the answers provided for each quiz attempt, how many users chose each possible answer, the total number of responses, and the average score on the question. Question Details reports can help you evaluate trends in answers and look for questions that were unclear or difficult for a number of users. The question title, text, bonus status, and difficulty level are included in the CSV file so that data can be analyzed without referring back to the learning management system. Detailed reports can be generated that show class results from quizzes All reports can be exported to a CSV file for offline analysis. Survey You can export survey statistics and reports to a CSV file for data analysis. The CSV file contains all pertinent information from the survey so that you can query, sort and evaluate the data without being connected to the learning management system. You must set up survey reports from the Reports Setup tab for the appropriate survey before you can view or export reports. SUMMARY REPORT The Summary Report includes all of the questions and answers provided for each survey attempt, how many users chose each possible answer, feedback messages, total number of attempts, and details of responses. Teachers can also set a release date for this report. INDIVIDUAL ATTEMPTS REPORT This report includes the Org Defined ID, username, first name, and last name of each user. These elements can also be hidden for anonymous survey results. Detailed information about each question, the 5
number of attempts, including how long each attempt took is also presented. As in the Summary Report, teachers can also set a release date for this report. When surveys are conducted, the results can be easily viewed and compared in a report Class Progress The User Progress tool features a dashboard view of all reporting pages across Desire2Learn tools for a given student s activity within an organizational unit (e.g. course, department or institution). Desire2Learn tools or items that students and teachers can view progress on include Checklist, Competencies, Content, Discussions, assignments (Dropbox), Grades, Quizzes, Surveys or system login history: 6

This capability allows users to access and analyze grades data outside Desire2Learn Learning Environment. Advanced Reporting in Desire2Learn Learning Environment The Reporting Tool is not limited to the numerous standard reports presented. Custom reports based on specified data, application of filters, and an array of different formatting options are also features of the Reporting Tool. Furthermore, Park Hill can take advantage of existing third party reporting tools. Desire2Learn Learning Environment's Reporting tool uses predefined datasets and output formats.
