Lot 1 - Buccheroid Oinochoe Medium and technique: brown buccheroid paste; impressed, incised and relief decoration. Size: 15.5 cm high. Description: the oinochoe is characterised by oval, somewhat elongated, body, with one handle and height ranging from 20 to 40 cm. This oinochoe is wheel-thrown, with quite thin walls, slightly flaring rim, short cylindrical neck and carinated pear-shaped body, which narrows towards the ring-shaped bottom. The looped handle runs from rim to carination, with relief and impressed ribbing decoration along it and an animal protome at the rim joint. Presence of large encrustations, while the somewhat imperfect reduction firing has resulted in the bronzed colour of the surface. The upper part of the body, from neck to carination, also shows a rather deep impressed ribbing decoration. On the side opposite the handle, a round boss is placed above the carination, in quite high relief. The lower part of the body, below carination, is grooved by an array of incised horizontal and parallel lines. Style and remarks: this oinochoe, according to carinated body and impressed and relief decoration, can be ascribed to the light-bucchero type dating to the early seventh century BC. Dating: early 7th century BC. Referens: Bianchi Bandinelli R., Torelli M., Etruria Roma, 1992. Briquel D., La Civilisation Étrusque, 1999. Lot 2 - Buccheroid Kantharos Price: 300 Euros Medium and technique: dark brown buccheroid paste; impressed and relief decoration. Size: 5.5 cm high. Description: this kantharos is wheel-thrown and has a short cylindrical neck, quite thin walls and two couples of handles that cross near the rim joint, standing a little above the latter. The carinated body is flattened and has a flat bottom. Presence of large encrustations, while the somewhat imperfect reduction firing has resulted in the bronzed colour of the surface. The two couples of handles of the kantharos, each with the handles crossing each other near the rim, show a sculptural moulding, while a decoration runs along the flattened carinated body: specifically, two symmetrical bosses in relief set between two impressed decorations each consisting of three vertical grooves, which form a not so deep ribbing decoration. Style and remarks: according to flattened carinated body and impressed and relief decoration, this kantharos can be attributed to the light-bucchero type dating to the early seventh century BC. Dating: early 7th century BC. Referens: Bianchi Bandinelli R., Torelli M., Etruria Roma, 1992. Briquel D., La Civilisation Étrusque, 1999. Lot 3 - Villanovan Vessels 1 Villanovan Beaker Medium and technique: coarseware. Size: 6.5 cm high, 12.5 cm wide. Description: beaker with coarse paste and truncated conical body. Decorative band on the shoulder, with geometric 'sawtooth' motifs. It has three sub-triangular grips. The different colours are due to the imperfect firing as typical of the Villanovan period. Style and remarks: the functional shape, paste and decoration attest to a prehistoric manufacture. Dating: 2nd millennium BC. Referens: Bianchi Bandinelli R., Torelli M., Etruria Roma, 1992. Briquel D., La Civilisation Étrusque, 1999. Die Etrusker und Europa, Mostra/Exhibition, Altes Museum, Berlin, 28.02-31.05 1993. Hencken H., Tarquinia and Etruscan Origins, 1968. Torelli M., Die Etrusker. Geschichte, Kultur, Gesellschaft, 1988. Saucer-Bowl (Late Bronze-Age) Medium and technique: ceramics. Size: 15.5 cm high, 12.5 cm wide. Description: this ceramic vessel is composed of a cup, the body of which shows a double-slope, so-called "carination". Its lip is everted and the looped handle is attached to the rim and to the widest part of the body. The surface is polished by "stralucido" technique. It was used during banquets for libation. Style and remarks: the shape of carinated saucer-bowl is typical of the Bronze-Age "Castelluccio" facies. Dating: 8-7th century BC. References: Bianchi Bandinelli R., Torelli M., Etruria Roma, 1992. Torelli M., Die Etrusker. Geschichte, Kultur, Gesellschaft, 1988. Grey-Paste Goblet Medium and technique: grey ceramics. Size: 8 cm high; diameter 10 cm. Provenance: southern Etruria. Description: this chalice-shaped goblet has a high and flared foot. It was decorated while throwing it on the wheel. The grey paste is a specific pre-bucchero technique and it was obtained by a "reduction firing" (that is, lack of oxygen in the atmosphere). Style and remarks: goblets were generally used at banquets for drinking wine. The specific paste of this vessel may suggest a manufacture of southern Italy. Dating: 6th century BC. Lot 4 -Hut-Shaped Cinerary Urn Medium: ceramics. Size: 28 cm high, 29 cm wide, 32 cm long. Description: Round hut-shaped urn with sloping ribbed roof, on the top of which the V-shaped structures probably represent the protruding shindles. Opening with door; no decoration. Interpretation: Hut-shaped urns are typical funerary containers of Villanovan period (around 9th-8th century BC), before the proper Etruscan Age, which especially developed in the central Italian areas. From these very regions several matches for this artefact actually come, although with a certain variety in terms of decoration and architectonic details. One can mention some examples from Vetulonia, Castel Gandolfo, from the necropolis of Osteria dell Osa in Latium, which allow one to date the object in question to the 9th or (probably not late) 8th century. State of preservation: fragmented. Dating: c. 9th-(early) 8th century BC. References: Amann P., Die Etruskerin. Geschlechterverhältnis und Stellung der Frau im frühen Etrurien (9.-5. Lot 5 - Ritual ceramic Helm Medium: ceramics. Size: 19 cm high, 19 cm wide, 21 cm long. Description: Presumably a lid with the typical shape of crested helm for covering a male cinerary urn. On the body, swastika decoration, dotted inside and framed within a double square, also dotted. Four unbroken lines run along the lower rim of the artefact, with small circles just above them. Interpretation: This artefact appears to belong to the so-called crested-helm-shaped lids for the typical male biconical cinerary urn, considered an index fossil of the Villanovan period (c. 10th-8th/7th century BC). The best comparisons in terms of shape and decoration seem to come from southern Etruria (southern Tuscany and northern Latium), not only from Etruscan contexts (Faliscan too). These parallels also support the dating to the last Villanovan time (around 8th-early 7th century BC), that is, on the verge of the Orientalising period, which progressively brought about the disappearance of such objects as a consequence of the spread of inhumation under the Greek influence. State of preservation: complete; with one abrasion on the surface. Dating: c. 8th-early 7th century BC. References: Bianchi Bandinelli R., Torelli M., Etruria Roma, 1992. Lot 6 - Illyrian Helm Medium and technique: bronze; casting and hammering. Size: 22 cm high. Description: this is a bronze combat helmet of Illyrian culture. It is made out of cast bronze foil worked by hammer. The spherical cap shows carination in the lowest part, whilst on the top of it, there are two ridges in relief with ribs at the side, in order to attach the crest, but also for strengthening the metal and making it more resistent to blows. The two cheek plates (paragnatides) are angular and with a sharp vertex. The helmet has a rectangular frontal opening that extends between the forehead and the cheek pieces. The neck guard is everted and with narrow horizontal brim, in order to protect the back of the head and neck. The bronze foil shows two old repairs, one carried out by a partial re-casting and the other by adding another metal foil. This helm was certainly used for more than one combat. Bronze is heavily affected by oxidation because of weathering, as shown by oxidised-green bubbles on the surface. State of preservation: excellent; the helm is complete, with two ancient repairs. Dating: 7th-6th century BC. References: Adorno, 1985,L'arte italiana. Antike Helme. Handbuch mit katalog edito da Römisch- Germanisches Zentralmuseum, Mainz 1988). Lot 7 - Cuman-Etruscan Red-On-White Oinochoe Medium and technique: ceramics; white paint; red paint. Size: 26 cm high, 14.5 cm wide. Description: this oinochoe has a flattened ovoid shape that recalls the Proto-Corinthian or Eastern Greek culture. it has a distinct foot and a cylindrical and elongated neck. The handle is ribbon-shaped with hollow. Decoration is made of red engobe and displays a repertoire featured by geometric motifs, specifically lattice- and line-filled triangles alternating with orientalising patterns like fish, as is shown on the shoulder of the vessel. Style and remarks: all this array of forms and decorations are well-known amongst the Proto-Corinthian and Eastern Greek Geometric pottery. However, the Cuman mediation can well be inferred from the preference for motifs widespread in the Italiot colony, such as sinusoids and fish. The dating of this artefact is established according to parallels with Hellenic materials. It belongs to the red-on-white category. Dating: early 7th century BC. References. Price: 700 Euros Lot 8 - Stralucido - Polisched Kantharos Dating: 7th-6th century BC Medium and technique: ceramics. Size: 18 cm high, 13.3 cm wide. Description: the kantharos was a vessel used during banquets for holding wine. This vase is made out of a coarse ceramic paste and shows an extremely fine polishing that creates the glowing effect. The shape is globular, slightly carinated, with handles that run from belly to rim, where they form vertical shafts. The lower part of the vessel is decorated by vertical grooves in relief. Style and remarks: its shape, the very fine surface polishing and the relief decoration suggest a product of Magna Graecia, in particular between the seventh and the sixth century BC. Lot 9 - Etruscan Antefix Medium and technique: ceramics; black paint; red paint. Size: 20 cm high, 13 cm wide; 15 cm long. Description: this antefix is made out of ceramics and painted. The shape is a female head. Her black-painted hair flows down the neck from the centre of the forehead, gathered in large braids that end in curls. Her forehead is spacious and the eyebrows are directly painted on it, with no difference in terms of plane. She has disc-shaped earrings decorated with seven red polka dots. Her eyes, also painted black, are large and stretched as typical of archaic expression. Her nose is small and slightly tip-tilted. Her mouth is also small, with the lips markedly highlighted by red paint. Her face is thin and the neck is clearly covered by a puckered dress drawn on it. Style and remarks: antefix is an architectonic element largely used during the Etruscan period, especially for adorning the ends of temples' roofs. The pleated hair at the forehead suggests a Ionic provenence for this terracotta sculpture. The style is archaic Etruscan. Her smile and stretched eyes belong to the same cultural trend as the korai. State of preservation: complete, with abrasions on the paint. Dating: late 6th century BC. Lot 10 - Etruscan Skyphos Medium and technique: ceramics; red paint. Size: 6 cm high. Description: this skyphos is made out of pinkish ceramics and decorated by a light beige paint. Its shape is a cup with loop handles slightly turned up. In the central scene, hounds chasing one another are painted on the ceramic surface. These animals are outlined by stylised strokes taken from geometric forms. The vase is divided into three decoration sections. The lowest part displays red-painted triangles, while the top one is decorated by vertical lines that reach the rim of the vessel. Style and remarks: this is a red-on-white skyphos (corsivo anche qui in italaino) of Etruscan manufacture; it can be attributed to the 7th-6th century BC on the basis of comparisons. The outer side of the cup is adorned in the upper part with scenes of lions that chase one another, painted black over a spared band. It is an unbroken pattern which runs all round the vessel. In the part below carination, a swan is depicted with its wings unfolded, which is also painted black and red on a spared band (c e un cigno? se no da togliere questa frase). Style and remarks: the decoration carried out on a light ground and the rooster's stylised and elongated shape indicate an Etruscan-Corinthian manufacture of the second quarter of the sixth century BC. State of preservation: paint. complete, with some abrasions on the Dating: second quarter of the 6th century BC. References: Bianchi Bandinelli Paribeni, 1976, classica, Grecia, Utet, Torino. Lot 16 - Attic Black-Figure Amphora Medium and technique: ceramics; black paint; red paint. Size: 21.3 cm high. Description: this amphora has a globular body and belongs to the group with non-distinct neck. It has a flared foot, loop handles and a thick and straight rim. It is painted black and the main decoration is composed of two parts with black figures against red ground. The frontal picture displays a man with long and braided hair held back by a crown with small leaves. He has a dilated eye and a round pupil; besides, he has a full-grown beard painted red. One can also distinguish a dress decorated with maze motifs and his hand that is definitely sketched naturalistically. On the backside, a horseman is portrayed. The subject wears a simple tunic and wields a spear in his right hand, while the left one holds the bridles to direct the horse. A decorative red line runs round the neck, foot and the lower part of the vase. Style and remarks: this amphora is a manufacture of Magna Graecia. Lot 17 - Attic Black-Figure Lekythos Medium and technique: black-painted ceramics. Size: 16.3 cm high. Description: the body of this vessel has an elongated shape and shows strong discontinuity between neck and body. The rim is high and thick. Decoration is made of black paint on red ground. Black paint covers the whole vessel except for the main scene and the shoulder. The central scene depicts a male figure wrapped in a chiton sitting on a bipartite seat. The character holds a horn of plenty in his right hand. His face is characterised by a long beard, pronounced nose and is crowned by vine shoots. This scene is probably about a Bacchanal. The main figure is completed by an essential ornamentation composed of vine shoots. The shoulder of the vase is decorated with a hunt scene displaying a hound chasing a running hare. These figures are alternated with palmettes. Style and remarks: the shape of this lekythoswith its body clearly separate from the neck by a pronounced carination suggests a dating around the first quarter of the sixth century BC. Lot 18 - Attic Black-Figure Lekythos Medium and technique: ceramics; black paint. Size: 15 cm high. Description: this lekythos belongs to the category of vessels with elongated pear-shaped body and distinct shoulder. Its shoulder and almost the whole body are polished, the other parts are painted black. The varnish of the drawing is black-dark brown and dull-red. The decoration at the base of the neck depicts a scene with a subject between two palmettes. In the main scene below the shoulder, three warriors are portrayed only in the front part of the vase. The central character is a horseman (seen in profile), who wears a long shirt and wields a spear that is turned towards the figure on the right. The second warrior is portrayed as parrying the blow from the spear. He wears a Corinthian crested helm. His weapons are the hoplite round shield and a spear, which he holds turned upwards. The left warrior is symmetrical with the right one; he bears the same weapons and is turned towards the opposite direction. The lower part of the vase is decorated with a homogeneous black-painted band. Style and remarks: the shape of this lekythos with its body separate from the neck by a pronounced carination suggests a dating around the first quarter of the sixth century BC. This is crowned and bearded and holds a cup in his right hand as the servant facing him is pouring probably some wine in it. The main character is wrapped in a long dress decorated with white flowers painted over it. To the sides, two figures with white skin are depicted wrapped in long robes, too. Their hands are tentacular and stretch out toward the "seated deceased". The upper part is composed of squares painted black, which are alternatively placed against either of the two red lines located below the rim. The bottom of the vessel is decorated with red lines and black varnish. Style and remarks: the black-figure decoration of this vase and the subject here represented indicate a manufacture of Magna Graecia, which may be dated to the end of the sixth-beginning of the fifth century BC. State of preservation: put back together and with a missing portion close to the rim. Dating: end of 6th-beginning of 5th century BC. Lot 20 - Attic Black-Figure Lekythos Medium and technique: ceramics; black paint. Size: 16.5 cm high. Description: this lekythos (corsivo anche in italiano) belongs to the category of vessels with elongated pear-shaped body and distinct shoulder. Its shoulder and almost the whole body are polished, the rest is painted black. The varnish of the drawing is black-dark brown and dull-red. In the main scene, four female figures wrapped in a peplos are portrayed as picking grapes from vine shoots that frame them. Drapery is stylised, in bands that fall down slantwise along their body. An essential decorative band is just below the shoulder, composed of stylised maze motifs. The shoulder of the vessel is decorated with strokes that converge on the neck with dot-shaped ends. The lower part of the vase is decorated with homogeneous black-painted bands. Style and remarks: the shape of this lekythos (corsivo in italiano) with its body clearly separate from the neck by a pronounced carination suggests a dating around the first quarter of the sixth century BC. State of preservation: fragmented, with added parts by restoration. Dating: early 6th century BC. Lot 21 - Bucchero Oinochoe Price: 1000 Euros Medium and technique: bucchero; incised decoration. Size: 22.5 cm high; 14 cm wide. Description: this oinochoe, thrown on a fast wheel, has a trefoil rim with a single protrusion close to the handle, since the other one on the opposite side is fractured. The handle is ribbon-shaped and runs vertically from rim to shoulder. The high and cylindrical neck is flared in the upper part and separate from the body by a small collar slightly in relief. The body is slightly ovoid and the foot is shallow and disc-shaped. This oinochoe shows on the shoulder decorative patterns arranged at close intervals and composed of thin incised dotted lines that start from a single point and expand like a fan. In addition, a band runs all round the central part of the body, marked by two incised horizontal lines and decorated with thin vertical linear incisions. Style and remarks: according to the three-foiled rim, the truncated conical neck flared in the upper part, the presence of a small collar in relief between neck and body, the ovoid body that slightly narrows towards the bottom and also the discshaped foot, this oinochoe belongs to the light-bucchero type, which is dated to the early seventh century BC. State of preservation: good; one fractured protrusion to the side of the handle. Dating: early 7th century BC. References. Lot 22 - Bucchero Oinochoe Medium and technique: ceramics. Size: 25.5 cm high; 16 cm wide. Description: the oinochoe is characterised by oval, somewhat elongated, body, with one handle and height ranging from 20 to 40 cm. This oinochoe, thrown on a fast wheel, has a trefoil rim with two protrusions to the sides of the handle. The latter is ribbon-shaped and runs vertically from rim to shoulder. Style and remarks: the oinochoe is a vessel similar to jug, which served the purpose of pouring wine or water. It was used as early as pre-hellenic time and some examples are known either made out of metal or terracotta, within the great variety of shapes that have characterised such a vessel from the Geometric through the Orientalising period, until the Attic black figures and finally red figures. According to the three-foiled rim, the truncated conical neck flared in the upper part, the presence of a small collar in relief between neck and body, the ovoid body that slightly narrows toward the bottom and also the disc-shaped foot, this oinochoe can be ascribed to the light-bucchero type, which is dated to the early seventh century BC. For the great spread and success of this shape, examples of bucchero are also found; namely, a type of pottery produced by the Etruscans, which is distinguished by a completely monochrome black surface that was obtained by a specific reduction firing. Buccheri were used in Etruria from the second quarter of the seventh century BC until the early fifth century BC and especially some forms of them were exported over the Mediterranean area (oinochoai, kantharoi, goblets), reaching the climax between the seventh and the sixth century BC. Dating: early 7th century BC. References. Bianchi Bandinelli Paribeni, 1976, L'arte dell'antichità classica, Etruria Roma, Utet, Torino. Boardman 1990;. Martinelli (a cura di) 2000. Lot 23 - Bucchero Kyathos Medium and technique: black bucchero polished by a wooden tool; incised and relief decoration. Size: 34 cm high; diameter 21.5 cm. Description: this kyathos has rather thick walls, a high and flaring flattened rim that is arranged by an offset onto the large truncated conical cup, a large trumpet-shaped foot with double ring in relief and a curving ribbon-shaped handle that vertically runs from lip to basin. The most decorated part is the handle, which, apart from its sagging shape to the top, shows, on the side facing the basin, an incised geometric ornamentation made of zigzag patterns comprised between two incised grooves. Two moulded claw-shaped apophyses are applied astride the rim, arranged at the same distance from the handle. Style and remarks: the first known examples of kyathoi amongst Greek pottery were made around 530 BC, following similar forms of Etruscan buccheri and perhaps original bronze models as suggested by the handle, which appears to be somewhat incongruous in respect with the usual shapes of terracotta ware. Dating: Early 6th century BC. References: Bianchi Bandinelli Paribeni, 1976, L'arte dell'antichità classica, Etruria Roma, Utet, Torino. Boardman 1990;. Martinelli (a cura di) 2000. Lot 24 - Bucchero Kyathos Price: 1500 Euros Medium and technique: black bucchero polished by a wooden tool; incised and relief decoration. Size: 34 cm high; diameter 21 cm. Description: this kyathos has rather thick walls, a high and flaring flattened rim that is arranged by an offset onto the large truncated conical cup, a large trumpet-shaped foot with double ring in relief and a curving ribbon-shaped handle that vertically runs from lip to basin. It is also provided with two clawshaped apophyses that are placed astride the rim at the same distance from the handle, slightly going into the basin. This kyathos shows two rings in relief on the lower part of the trumpet-shaped foot; besides, a carination slightly in relief and horizontal bands incised with a zigzag motif close to the rim of the cup. The most decorated part is the handle, which, apart from its sagging shape to the top, shows, on the side facing the basin, an incised geometric ornamentation made of two overlapping squares divided by diagonals into four triangles of same size and surrounded by zigzag patterns. Style and remarks: according to the relief and incised decoration of handle and rim as well as to the simple shape of cup and foot, this kyathos is to be ascribed to the light-bucchero type dating to the early sixth century BC. State of preservation: some portions of the foot are missing. Dating: early 6th century BC. References: Bianchi Bandinelli Paribeni, 1976, L'arte dell'antichità classica, Etruria Roma, Utet, Torino. Lot 25 - Bucchero Goblet Medium and technique: black bucchero polished by a wooden tool; incised and relief decoration. Size: 17.5 cm high; diameter 16 cm. Description: this goblet has very thin walls especially close to the rim. The shape of the body is a truncated cone and the rim is high, set on the cup by an offset. The trumpet-shaped foot is high and large with a ring in relief. The goblet has a plain, thin lip and has no decoration until just before the offset, whereat two parallel grooves have been incised, while the offset itself is adorned with a kerb-like pattern in relief. Style and remarks: according to carination's simple relief and incised decoration and for the trumpet shape of foot with ring in relief, this goblet can be ascribed to the light-bucchero type dating to the late seventh century BC. State of preservation: a portion of the foot is missing. Dating: late 7th century BC. References. Bianchi Bandinelli Paribeni, 1976, L'arte dell'antichità classica, Etruria Roma, Utet, Torino. Lot 26 - Alabastron with Winged Genius Medium and technique: ceramics; black and red paint. Size: 12.5 cm high. Description: in terms of ornamentation, the alabastron follows the natural evolution of Greek decorativism actually adapted to object's shape and size. This example, thrown on a fast wheel, has disc-shaped mouth, very short truncated conical neck, pear-shaped body and rounded bottom, which is slightly flattened to maintain its vertical position. This alabastron is characterised by a black decoration with purple elements and etched details. The disc-shaped mouth and the bottom are decorated with flaps, the short and narrow neck with an array of petals. The rest of the body is dominated by the figure of a genius, with wings unfolded, who proceeds leftwards. This genius is painted black with some purple details of wings and body that are etched into the surface. The rest of the field shows also large rosette patterns. Style and remarks: according to the disc-shaped mouth and the pyriform body that enlarges towards the slightly-rounded bottom, this alabastron can be attributed to the Etruscan-Corinthian type dating to the end of seventh-beginning of sixth century BC. State of preservation: complete, with abrasions on the paint. Dating: End of 7th-beginning of 6th century BC. The rest of the body is dominated by the figure of a standing siren, with wings unfolded, who proceeds rightwards. The siren, mythological animal connected with the myth of Ulysses and depicted on vases with bird body and human, generally female, face, is painted black with some details of wings and body that are purple and etched. The rest of the field shows also large rosette patterns. Over the body, a zoomorphic pattern is framed by two thin parallel brown lines and displays a grazing four-footed animal turned to the left, probably a caprid according to the long horns, which is painted dark brown and purple with some anatomical details of muscles that are white and etched. To the side of this animal there is a bird with long beak, perhaps a swan proceeding leftwards, also painted dark brown and with some white and etched details. The field around the animals is entirely filled with large dots, in the upper part, and flowers painted dark brown, probably for depicting a natural setting. Style and remarks: according to its globular shape and decoration with zoomorphic patterns, namely, grazing caprid and swan, this aryballos can be dated to the sixth century BC. Dating: 6th century BC. References: Bianchi Bandinelli Paribeni, 1976, L'arte dell'antichità classica, Etruria Roma, Utet, Torino. Lot 30 - Globular Aryballos with Hoplites Medium and technique: globular ceramic shape with chamoiscolour paste; dark brown paint with strokes of purple and white varnish and some etched details. Size: 11.1 cm high. Description: this wheel-thrown example has disc-shaped mouth with small groove on top of the flat part, short and narrow truncated conical neck, ribbon-shaped handle vertically running from rim to shoulder, globular body and rounded bottom. This aryballos shows dark brow-painted radial flaps on top of the rim's flat part as well as on the lip, shoulder and at the base of the neck, whilst some parallel lines are found on the handle. Over the body there is a procession of warriors, framed by dark brown parallel dotted lines, who proceed leftwards and wear a crested helm, a large round shield with white and purple finishings, a spear, the end and blade of which emerge from the shield, and greaves. The field around the warriors is completely covered with dark brown-painted dots. Style and remarks: according to its globular shape and decorative pattern with train of warriors, this aryballos can be dated to the early sixth century BC. Men's iconography and evidence from vases' depictions indicate that athlets used these vessels for holding oil, which served the purpose of cleansing after playing, as it was probably also the case with soldiers after fighting. These jars have at times been found amongst votive deposits near acropolises, temples and wall groundworks, probably being offered by young men who were reaching adulthood. State of preservation: complete with abraded. Dating: 6th century BC. References: Bianchi Bandinelli Paribeni, 1976, L'arte dell'antichità classica, Etruria Roma, Utet, Torino. Lot 52 - Bracelet with anthropomorphic head Medium and technique: ceramics; red paint. Size: 7.1 cm width; 6.1 cm lenght; Medallion: 2.5 cm high; 3.3 width Description: Gold openwork bracelet composed of a line of overlapping S framed by two straps. Reach decoration around the joint, specifically granulated geometric motifs (triangles, lozenges, and rosettes on the back side, as well as lines running all along the outside), spirals, flowers and an anthropomorphic head. Style and remarks: The openwork technique was quite widespread in Etruscan contexts, although precise comparisons for the S-motif have not emerged from the research (the best match is perhaps that of fig. 3 from Vulci, significantly dating to the fourth century BC). The other decoration elements, in particular granulation and spiral motif, are typical of the Orientalising period; nonetheless, for this artefact, the comparison with manufactures from Taranto (source of inspiration for the Etruscan workshops) appears to be crucial. These are characterised by spirals, flowers and anthropomorphic faces, and their manufactures were widespread throughout the fourth century BC, significantly coming to an end by the end of that century. It is anyway the anthropomorphic head that seems to prove such a dating, according to finds from Populonia (fourth century BC) and Vulci (around 350 BC), which may bring to identify the head of the bracelet in question with a Gorgon or rather the Etruscan daemon Tuxul-xa. Dating: half 4th century References: Ori delle alpi quaderni della sezione archeologica del castello del buonconsiglio - sezioni archeologiche. Lot 53 - Etruscan earrings of amphora shape Medium and technique: Gold, fusion, granulation. Size: 6 cm high. Description: Pair of gold ear-rings, composed of a two-handled-amphora and a sphere above it, which is directly fastened to the hook. On the body of the objects, granulated decoration featured by linear, S-shaped, rosette, triangular and anthropomorphic motifs. Style and remarks: Some typological characteristics and details allow one to contextualise this artefact quite precisely, in terms of dating and manufacturing workshop. As from the late fourth century BC, one can note a certain influence, probably through Taranto, of Hellenistic patterns on the Etruscan goldsmith s art, besides a revival, especially in the first half of the third century BC, of granulation, which was typical of the orientalising period (especially seventh century BC). The very ear-rings with granulated amphora are particularly representative, which were made at Vulci and Cerveteri throughout the third century BC and beyond. The latter seems to be the most probable time for the manufacture of the objects in question, also according to the progressive disappearing of granulation in late Hellenistic and Roman times. Nevertheless, at least the early decades of the second century BC cannot be excluded, specifically for the technique of clasping the pendant directly to the hook, which, at Taranto, appears to have started in this century.
