COURSE SYLLABUS HIWD 560 HISTORY OF THE ATLANTIC WORLD COURSE DESCRIPTION This course examines the social, cultural, political and economic exchanges and interactions of the Atlantic World circa. 1492 circa 18. RATIONALE This course provides a foundation for understanding hemispheric exchanges that took place following Columbus voyage to the Americas. Students will gain a better understanding of European, African, Latin American, and North American history since 1492. I. Identify major periods and themes in the social and political development of the Atlantic World. B. Describe the cultural and economic interactions of Atlantic World inhabitants. C. Evaluate and compare the construction and deconstruction of New and Old World social, political, and cultural identities. D. F. Create pedagogical tools for teaching Atlantic World History. V. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS A. Textbook readings and lecture presentations/notes B. Course Requirements Checklist After reading the Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1. C. Discussion Board Forums (3) There will be 3 Discussion Board Forums throughout this course. The student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided topic for each forum. Each thread must be 400 words in length and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 3 other classmates threads. Each reply must be 2 words in length. D. PowerPoint Submissions (4) The student will submit 4 PowerPoint presentations that are chosen from an approved listing of topics. The presentation must be between 12 15 slides and include presentation notes. E. Movie Review The student will write a 4 5-page (approximately 1,200 words) critical response essay in current Turabian format to The Mission. F. Slave Trade Database Exercise The student will complete a research exercise utilizing the assigned websites. The student will also construct a teaching exercise (video, PowerPoint lecture, etc.) based on the information obtained from the assigned websites. G. Book Analysis The student will write a 1,000-word critical response essay in current Turabian format to Jon Sensbach s Rebecca s Revival: Creating Black Christianity in the Atlantic World. H. Research Proposal The student will write a 3 5-paragraph proposal in current Turabian format for the Research Project. The proposal must be approved by the instructor before the student may move forward with the project. I. Research Project The student will write a 12 15-page research-oriented paper in current Turabian format on a student-chosen topic regarding Atlantic World History. The paper must include at least 20 references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. J. Quizzes (8) Page 2 of 4

Each quiz will cover the Reading & Study material for the modules/weeks in which it is assigned. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes; contain 28 true/false and multiple-choice questions and 2 essay questions; and have a 1-hour time limit. VI. COURSE GRADING AND POLICIES A. Late Assignment Policy If the student is unable to complete an assignment on time, then he or she must contact the instructor immediately by email. Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the instructor will receive the following deductions: 1. Late assignments submitted within one week of the due date will receive a 10% deduction. 2. Assignments submitted more than one week late will receive a 20% deduction. 3. Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the class will not be accepted. 4. Late Discussion Board threads or replies will not be accepted. Special circumstances (e.g. death in the family, personal health issues) will be reviewed by the instructor on a case-by-case basis. D. Quizzes/Tests/Exams For timed quizzes/tests/exams, students are required to complete the exam within the assigned time (for students who exceed this time limit, a penalty of 5% will be deducted for each minute in excess of the assigned time limit). Students must take the quiz/test/exam during the assigned module/week (a 5% point deduction per day Page 3 of 4

is assigned for late assignments). No quiz/test/exam will be accepted seven (7) days after original due date without written approval from the instructor (this approval must be sought prior to assignment due date). E.
