Memory Performance Considerations General Guidelines Choose a CPU with support for highest memory channel speed Best memory performance can be obtained by using a balanced memory configuration Maximum Performance Considerations Use all available memory channels (4 per processor, 8 total per system) Use identical DIMM populations in size and speed across channels. Populate both processors with equal amounts of memory Ensure same number of ranks are populated per channel Have at least 2 ranks available on each channel Examples For optimal 2133MHz performance at a given capacity, populate up to 16 DIMM s (up to 8 per CPU). For optimal performance at the highest capacity, populate up to 16 sockets with LRDIMMs. Power Consumption Considerations Use fewer, higher capacity DIMM s. For example eight 16GB DIMM s will generally have lower power requirements than sixteen 8GB DIMM s. Populating more DIMM s per channel and using less channels (opposite of guidance above) will reduce overall system power, but at the cost of significant performance reduction. 31
Memory Population Rules Independent Mode DIMM capacities, frequency and rank may be mixed Mixing memory type (RDIMM, LR-DIMM) is not supported Populate DIMM farthest from CPU of any given channel first RAS Modes (Mirroring, Sparing, Lockstep) DIMM capacities, frequency, rank and type must be identical Populate DIMM farthest from CPU of any given channel first 32
