(1) NEW APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR POSTGRADUATE COURSES WITH RELEVANCE TO DEVEL- OPING COUNTRIES The DAAD has recently announced new application deadlines for the scholarship programme Postgraduate Courses with Relevance to Developing Countries. Scholarship applicants from developing countries can apply at the German embassy or at the DAAD regional office, or directly to the university. The general deadlines for applications are as follows: German Embassy/DAAD Regional Office: 31 st July University: 30 th September or 15 th October Applicants must check information regarding application closing dates directly with the individual universities, since they may vary from the general deadlines listed above. The selection process generally takes place at the universities in the period from November to February.

(2) INTERNATIONAL DAAD-ALUMNI SUMMER SCHOOL ABFALL UND WASSERWIRTSCHAFT The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) provides financial means to organize an International DAAD Alumni Summer School on Abfall und Wasserwirtschaft which will be held in Siegen (Germany), from 5th to 12th September, 2010. Subsequent to the Summer School in Siegen the participants of the summer school will travel to Munich on 12th September, where a special program is organized by DAAD in co-operation with the German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste (DWA). A visit to the world largest international trade fair IFAT (on Water, Wastewater and Recycling) is part of the program. The entire Summer School is scheduled from 5th September to 18th September 2010 (5th September day of arrival, 18th September day of departure). The main topic of the Summer School in Siegen is Abfall und Wasserwirtschaft. Papers of participants and invited guests, as well as group discussion will cover various subtopics, such as integrated management of resources, wastewater treatment and materials cycle, waste management and legal aspects of waste and wastewater. The participants of the International Summer School should be Alumni of a German university from a developing country, working in the field of water and waste management or in the field of renewable energies (including environmental and water management, wastewater management, agriculture, economy, energy sector), preferably with contacts to German enterprises or interested in those contacts. They should be multipliers, e.g. people who are in a position to spread the acquired knowledge and experience and/or decision makers, able to take decisions in the water, waste and energy sector. All Alumni interested in giving a presentation during the summer school are requested to send abstracts. The summer school will be held in German and English, sufficient knowledge in both languages is required to participate in the summer school, enabling you to follow the presentations and discussion rounds. Application deadline: 30 th April 2010 For further information contact ingrid.althoff@uni-siegen.de The application form can be downloaded at http://www.gawn.de/applicationform.pdf (3) DAAD RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS: CONFLICT STUDIES AND MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME AT WILLY BRANDT SCHOOL OF PUBLIC POLICY IN ERFURT, GERMANY The Willy Brandt School in Erfurt launches a research programme in conflict studies and conflict management focusing on (policy) issues relevant to regions of conflict. Research fellowships will commence in winter semester 2010 and Master and doctoral students will enroll. The CSMP aims at preparing students who want to pursue a career in relevant organisations and seeks to produce applicable knowledge in the area of conflict studies. At the time of their application, applicants for CSMP Fellowships must 1. be able to prove their outstanding study or research achievements. 2. hold a doctorate/ph.d., have proven research experience of at least 2 years in a relevant field and institution and be currently working in institutions of higher education or at a research institute; positions are open to outstandingly-qualified academics and scientists. 3. have an excellent knowledge of English; knowledge of German is advantageous, but not required. Applicants cannot be considered if they have been in Germany for more than one year at the time of application.

This is accomplished by reports and interviews with experienced professors, students and representatives of science and industry. The publication presents an overview of the different forms of doctoral research - from traditional individual supervision to the structured programmes offered at graduate schools, research training groups and the International Max Planck Research Schools. It provides valuable information on the formal requirements as well as various forms of funding. A collection of links is provided for further information and individual searches. The brochure was published by the German Academic Exchange Service and funded by the German Federal Foreign Office. It is available in English and German and can be downloaded as a PDF file under www.research-in-germany.de/downloads (5) JOIN THE ALUMNIPORTAL DEUTSCHLAND The Alumniportal Deutschland is an useful internet platform for all Germany trained alumni. Whether you were trained in Germany over a period not less than 3 months or trained in Ghana under German sponsorship, you are a Germany Alumnus / Alumna and therefore welcome to join the Alumniportal Deutschland. ADVANCED COMPUTATIONAL AND CIVIL ENGINEERING STRUCTURAL STUDIES (ACCESS) TU DRESDEN ACCESS is designed to develop knowledge and competences in the field of computational mechanics and structural analysis in close combination with advanced civil engineering design. Technical innovations for challenging engineering tasks rely heavily on numerical simulation tools. Thus, the goal of the programme is to provide the skills for modeling, analysis and understanding of these approaches in the broader context of application and design. Engineers with a strong computational background are highly needed in international companies, consultant agencies, engineering offices, construction enterprises and research.

It is designed to provide students with the required expert-knowledge, skills and methods as well as interdisciplinary key-qualifications, taking into account the requirements and changes in the professional world; to enable them to work scientifically, to classify and utilise scientific discoveries in a critical manner and to act responsibly. Applicants have to hold a Bachelor s degree in Computer Science or a related subject. For detailed information on the application requirements, applicants are asked to carefully read the guidelines on the program s website: http://master.cs.uni-bonn.de (8) FREE UNIVERSITY OF BERLIN: INTERNATIONAL MASTER S PROGRAMMES 2010 The web-based Master's program in International Relations or East European Studies is hosted by the Free University of Berlin s Center for Global Politics. The two award-winning M.A. programs in East European Studies and International Relations use blended study formats, combining in-house and online sessions. Each degree confers 120 ECTS credits. Applications for fall 2010 are now being accepted. East European Studies Online ( www.ees-online.org ) EU expansion and rapid political, social and economic changes mark some of the latest developments in the dynamic region of Eastern Europe and provide the background for East European Studies Online. The accredited interdisciplinary M.A. programme prepares students for high-level Eastern Europe-related assignments in business, media, non-governmental and international organizations, and the public sector. East European Studies Online was recently named one of the Top Ten International Master's Degree Courses in Germany. International Relations Online ( www.ir-online.org ) With globalization on the rise and a multitude of issues affecting today's world politics, individuals with international expertise and a thorough understanding of global political, economic, and communication processes are in high demand. Candidates in the M.A. program gain in-depth, analytical knowledge of International Relations and global politics, enabling them to tackle global issues with a balance of hard and soft-skills. The degree provides candidates with top-tier academic credentials for the international job market. Applicants need to hold a Bachelor s degree, need good English language proficiency and prior professional experience. (9) CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL HEALTH S (CIH LMU ) PHD-PROGRAMME The Center for International Health s (CIH LMU ) at Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU), Munich primary objective is to promote educational and research activities within developing countries, in order to establish and enhance a generation of scientists that will be able to contribute to the resolution of local and regional development-related problems, particularly in the field of health. The CIH LMU -PhD-Program offers academic education and a research environment to scientists from developing countries, with special focus on the Millennium Development Goals. The duration of the programme is three years explicitly, starting in October every year, the program language is English. PhD-Students at CIH LMU are required to propose their own research project, as well as a local supervisor from their home institution or university. The research should take place preferably in a developing country, or within co-operations between LMU and the home institution or university of the applicant. CIH LMU assists applicants in finding a scientific co-supervisor at LMU. Sufficient funding and support for the proposed project should be available from the applicants home institution or from outside funds. CIH LMU does not provide research funding on its own but may assist in applications for outside funding. Generally, applicants are advised to develop their project plans and build up contact to a potential local supervisor well in advance, and to contact CIH LMU prior to the application. CIH LMU offers particular expertise in the following subjects: Infectious diseases and inflammatory disorders, Occupational health, Epidemiology, Health systems research, Mother and child health, Noncommunicable diseases, Clinical trials and Medical education. However, scientists focusing on other issues are encouraged to apply for the PhD-Program as well, since LMU provides sound expertise in the whole spectrum of health research. Selected outstanding candidates from low-income-countries and from official CIH LMU -Partner-Institutes are eligible for the CIH LMU -PhD-Scholarship, covering travel and a monthly allowance. Please refer to the CIH LMU -website at: www.cih.lmu.de (10) SLE PLUS SHORT TRAINING PROGRAMMES IN RURAL DEVELOPMENT SLE plus is designed to meet the needs of professionals working in the area of development cooperation in government and non-government organizations. SLE plus offers three short-term training courses at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin in the summer of 2010: - Decentralized Management of Regional Development (9 th 20 th August 2010) - Management of Development Projects (23 rd August 3 rd September 2010) - Conflict Transformation and Peace Building (6 th 17 th September 2010) A framework programme provides participants with the opportunity to become familiar with scholarly discussions in the field of development cooperation and to meet representatives of the relevant German government and non-government organizations and institutions. Course language: English Fee for each course: 500 (Partial) Scholarships will be available to qualified foreign alumni of German institutions of higher education and to alumni of universities who received a German sur-place-scholarship in their home country or a third country.

The master course Urban Agglomerations at the University of Applied Sciences, Frankfurt am Main is a 4 semester programme completely taught in English. It is interdisciplinary and has an international orientation. Its target group includes graduates with a first academic degree in architecture, civil engineering, urban, regional, landscape or environmental planning, geoinformatics or other planningrelated disciplines as well as some professional experience. Together with international partner universities, for example in Sweden, Australia, Chile and Brazil, the course structure aims to impart a profile of knowledge in the domain of urban, regional or landscape planning, transport and mobility as well as GIS, data analysis, social and cultural connotations.
