Director's preface Sixteen years have now passed since the initiation of DRUID and the organization is thriving in every respect. As in many previous years the two highlights are the conferences organized by DRUIDs. The 2011 DRUID Academy Winter conference - once again splendidly organized by Christian Østergaard - attracted new groups of doctoral students from all parts of the world strongly supported by much merited senior scholars. The Bent Dalum Award for the most promising paper was introduced in memory of one of DRUIDs founding fathers who sadly passed away just after last year's Academy conference. The major DRUID Society Conference in June - with the embracing title: "Innovation, Strategy, and Structure: Organizations, Institutions, Systems and Regions" - was also a significant success. The full program is included in this report. Two Ph.D. courses in "Getting your research into the journals" were again in 2011 organized by DRUIDs - one in January back-to-back with the winter conference while the second took place in June. Both courses were overbooked and the geographical reach of the participants witnessed the broad demand for courses of this nature. DRUID has for many years benefitted from being an active network partner in DIME, generously sponsored by the 6th Framework Programme of the European Union. DIME is an acronym for Dynamics of Institutions and Markets in Europe, and the group is working on the economic and social consequences of increasing globalization and the rise of the knowledge economy and consists of more than 200 scholars working at more than fifty universities and business schools throughout the European Union. But even very good things must sometimes end and DIME was concluded with a grand final conference held Maastricht on April 6-8th with DIME's Scientific Officer: Bart Verspagen as a driving force. More details are available through DIME's website <http://final.dime-eu.org/>. Additional details of previous and subsequent activities within DRUID are available through our website: www.druid.dk. The present report only covers DRUID s activities for the period January - December 2011. As always, the main emphasis of the report is on presenting outcomes in terms of publications, PhD activities or communication and interaction with users, but a few additional points regarding the run of the year are also included. Peter Maskell Professor, MSc, Ph.D. Dr.Merc. Director of DRUID 3

Introduction: Coverage of the report defining DRUID participant The core of the report presents an overview of activities and outputs covering DRUID participants. They are divided into two groups: DRUID staff and DRUID PhD students. In order to define who belongs to each of these groups we have used the following criteria: Those who are included as staff fulfils all the four criteria: 1. They have confirmed that they regard themselves as part of DRUID 2. They have agreed to submit at least one working paper to the DRUID Working Paper Series every second year. 3. They have participated in the DRUID conferences or have helped organizing these. 4. They have agreed to contribute to the realisation of the DRUID research programme. Those who are included as PhD students fulfil all the following five criteria: 1. They have/have had a tutor among those registered as DRUID staff. 2. They have confirmed that they still regard themselves as druid participants 3. They have confirmed that their PhD thesis can be found on the DRUID homepage either by a direct link or by a pdf-file. 4. They have participated in the DRUID winter conferences. 5. They have worked on issues that fall within the DRUID research programme Some participants in DRUID have moved from the category PhD students to becoming staff. They will appear in the staff category but they will also appear in the schematic presentation, see Appendix 4. Visiting scholars belonging to the DRUID network and publishing some of their work in the DRUID Working Paper series have not been included among the DRUID participants. Their contributions to the programme will be reflected exclusively through the list of working papers in appendix 4. With these definitions, there are 47 persons registered as staff, whose activities are reflected in the report, and 29 PhD students have in 2011 been connected to the research programme. Over the whole period 1995-2011 no less than 73 PhD students have been active in DRUID; of these 48 have successfully defended their theses so far (See Appendix 4). SECTION II: DRUID PhD Activities DRUID was initially established without funds for PhDs. However, during the run of the DRUID program an increasing number of PhD students have participated in the activities and greatly benefited from close interaction with senior scholars from the international network. The DRUID network, which was accepted by the Social Science Research Council (SSF) in December 2000, had PhD training as an explicit task of high priority. DRUID's PhD activities were then anchored in a permanent institution called the DRUID ACADEMY, rather than in a temporary network. The DRUID ACADEMY is a long-term cooperation agreement between the departments of DRUID Department of Business and management at Aalborg University, Department of Innovation and Organizational Economics at Copenhageb Business School and Department of Marketing and Management at University of Southern Denmark. At present there are 29 local and non-local PhD students involved (See further in Appendix 4). An important element in the DRUID PhD training is the active participation of students in the annual DRUID Winter Conference where PhD students are expected to present work in progress and in the annual DRUID Summer Conference where they are also expected to present papers and act as discussants on papers by international scholars. The PhD students related to DRUID have been active in all these respects during 2011. The intention of the DRUID ACADEMY was and still is to create synergy and critical mass for PhD students participating in the activities of DRUID. As part of its mission the DRUID Academy offers a balanced and coherent package of premium PhD courses, subject to realistic financial constraints. Some of these constraints are overcome by joining hands with other organizations when relevant such as DIME or ESNIE or by accepting fees from participating foreign PhD students reacting on the course announcements. The course program reflects an attempt to align the description of DRUID's scientific focus with contemporary research communities and streams of literature. It also adds an explicit focus on strategy, management and organization, a large and important community for DRUID's future activities. Presently, the planned domestic courses include: Theory courses Strategy, management and organization. Industry dynamics. Methods courses Applied Quantitative Methods. How to get my Research into Journals They are supplemented by the 6 weeks program of the DIME-ETIC. Three sessions of two weeks (Spring, Summer and Fall) each year. Participants are expected to attend two sessions at least. Each session includes a series of seniors lectures, PhD presentations 18

discussed by one PhD and one senior, and various forms of Round Table or Summary Meetings. The objectives are to offer younger researchers a specific training in the new developments of the Dynamics of Institutions and Markets in Europe and to provide an opportunity for direct interaction between younger researchers and "seniors" known for their expertise in the field. The DIME-ETIC is for younger researchers, in particular PhD students at an early stage in their research work. DRUID DIME Academy Winter Conference 2011 The DRUID-DIME Academy Winter Conference 2011 was as usual held at Comwell Rebild Bakker in Rebild south of Aalborg from Thursday, January 20 until Saturday, January 22. 130 abstracts were submitted which were 10 more that last year. Most submissions was from European Universities, however, some were from other parts of the World eg USA, Brazil and Korea. As every year the level of the quality of these abstracts was very high, which is very promising for the future of the community. We chose 72 abstracts for paper presentation and with only a few cancellation 67 PhD students ended up presenting their work. Six invited international senior guests participating along with 16 DRUID faculty members attended the conference. All six of the international senior guests gave keynote talks covering a wide range of topics from firm strategy, technology and innovation at all levels. The high level of interaction between the students and the high number of senior faculty contributed to making this conference a successful experience for all participants. We will try for the coming years to keep the student/professor level as high as possible to maximize the gains from participation for all. In addition, this year s conference was fairly balanced concerning the topics of the keynote talks covering most of the topics also dealt with by the participating Ph.D. students. The Bent Dalum Award was established this year and Jörg Clausen from University of Munich won the award for the most promising paper. CBS Druid PhD Event The DRUID PhD event of November 17, 2011 was the first to gather exclusively PhDs belonging to the DRUID network, and allowing them to discuss their research. Every PhD member of the DRUID society has been made aware of this event and participants represented Copenhagen Business School, University of Aalborg and University of Southern Denmark. The day consisted of 6 presentations of 30 minutes each, during which participants discussed the various research topics and provided feedback and comments. Every presentation contributed to generate an interesting discussion and in some cases, the audience also raised some novel issues to be taken into account to further develop and improve the research that was being presented. The spirit of the event was indeed very successful, as the discussion among the various participants continued also after the presentations and during the breaks. At the end of the day, evaluation forms were handed in to the participants in order to obtain their feedback for the day and activities. They show a high level of satisfaction for 19

the event, with an average vote of 4,35 out of 5. Moreover, the majority of participants indicated that the day has contributed in some way to their PhD, and is willing to attend another similar event.
