The actual excavating in the Archaeological Park will be accompanied by guided tours of both Paestum and the local archaeological museum The Etruscans of the Frontier, and complemented by workshops aiming at the cataloguing and recording of the archaeological finds. The programme includes excursions to the Agro Picentino, which is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty characterized by villages and monuments that constitute a remarkable repository of history and tradition. Who is the school for? The Summer School Picentia is intended primarily for those who are currently graduates, undergraduates and postgraduates (including PhD students) studying Archaeology, History, Art and Architecture, but applications are also welcome from anyone with a strong interest in and no prior knowledge in the field. Teaching programme Participants will be involved in the excavations and fieldwork as well as in the post excavation process under the guidance of experienced tutors and professors of Archaeology.

The practical experience is combined with a series of lectures which focuses on both the methodology of archaeological excavation and the techniques for graphic and photographic surveys. Proposed subjects also include the application of geophysical methods in archaeological research. The programme provides the participants with an introductory visit to the Archaeological Park and to the Museum in Pontecagnano, but there will also be the chance to explore Paestum Museum and Paestum Excavations. As part of the programme, the participants are encouraged to join a trip to St. Lawrence Charterhouse in Padula and excursions within settings of great naturalistic value, such as the Picentino Hills, the dune oasis in Torre a Mare (Paestum), or the natural oasis in Persano. The site According to Strabo (5, 4, 13), Picentia was founded in the Agro Picentino in 268 BC by the Romans after deporting a large part of the Piceni people living on the Adriatic coast of Italy. The remains of the archaeological site have been discovered in the area now named the Archaeological Park : the main street (decumanus) orthogonally crosses a minor one (cardo), creating in this way an insula where the residential buildings and the handycrafts workshops overlap each other in a complex stratigraphy that dates back to the 3 rd century BC and the 5 th and 6 th century AD. The Roman town replaced a more important and extensive Etruscan settlement, whose remains now consist of only two sanctuaries, one dedicated to Apollo and to the Etruscan Manth, another one devoted to a divinity similar to Demeter. Other urban blocks dating back to the 5 th- 4 th BC are currently being explored in the Archaeological Park. The necropolis has revealed about 10.000 tombs, dating back to the early 9 th century BC and the first half of the 3 rd century BC: an important selection of the finds is now displayed in the Archaeological Museum where you can also admire the richly decorated tombs of the principles dating back to the 7 th century BC. Programme The internship will be carried out in two phases of 15 days each (June 30 July 14; or/and July 14 July 28). The excavation activities will take place from Monday to Friday from 7.30 am to 12.30 pm. After the lunch break, the training will continue with the data recording and the analysis of the collected materials which would be approximately from 3.30 pm to 6.30 pm. In addition to the field study, there will be a guided tour of the Archaeological Park and Museum in Pontecagnano. All participants will attend plenary lectures covering a wide range of subjects. Topic interests include: Methodology and techniques of archaeological excavation: principles of archaeological stratigraphy, data recording, graphic and photographic survey Application of geophysical methods to archaeological research Archaeological Aerial Photography Archaeological cartography and GIS (Geographic Information System) As part of the programme there will be the following excursions to: Paestum: visiting the Museum and Excavations, and excursions to the dune oasis of Torre a Mare St. Lawrence Charterhouse in Padula Olevano sul Tusciano: visit of St. Michael Archangel s Cave and to the Longbard Castle

Natural oasis of Persano Natural area Frassineto The initiatives proposed as well as the excursions will enable the participants to discover the cultural and gastronomic traditions of the Picentino area
