The focus is on practical work and the development of professional skills. Graduates typically find work in national and international government and non-governmental organisations, such as the European Union, banks, translation agencies and multinational corporations. Applicants should have: an A-level or A-level equivalent qualification very good reading and writing skills in their two languages (they must be able to read/interpret complex texts taken from a range of subjects and registers, and produce equivalent complex language in their other language) an understanding of and interest in the cultural context/s of their two languages an interest in cultural difference and how language can be used to mediate such difference an interest in analysing texts and meanings an interest in learning about new topics and researching them the ability to work on their own, carry out research independently using a variety of resources (including the internet) Students of a high standard are awarded a certificate from the Chartered Institute of Linguists, and may be exempted from Paper 1 of the CIOL's Postgraduate Diploma in Translation.

Course structure Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) Assessment Further information and contact The focus is on the practice of translation and the development of professional skills. Full time study involves 4/5 modules per level. These include: Level 4 (year 1) Language, Communication and Culture; The Translator and Language; Practical Resources for Translators. Level 5 (year 2) Translation Process and Procedures; Translating Text and Culture; Electronic Tools for Translation; Managing Translation. Level 6 (year 3) Theoretical Aspects of Translation; Specialised Translation Domains; Working in the Professional Environment; Interpreting Skills; Translation Project. All students undertake a work placement at a translation agency in the UK or abroad. APEL provides students with the opportunity to have their prior experiential learning assessed and included within their BA Translation degree. The course is taught in dedicated IT labs and uses professional translation software found in the industry (Trados, Passolo, Swift). Candidates should normally have a first degree in translation, interpreting, modern languages or related fields. Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) English Law

Places on this course are limited. In order to secure a place please apply as soon as possible and no later than 15th August 2015. In the last five years the course has been available in the following languages: Arabic, Czech, Farsi/Dari, French, Hausa, Italian, Lithuanian, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian and European), Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Turkish and Urdu. If your language is not listed, please contact us. However, please note that new language pathways can only be opened for a minimum of three students. Please note: this is a preparatory course for the DPSI examination. London Metropolitan University is not an Examination Centre. Students will have to register for the exam with the Chartered Institute of Linguists. Check their website at: www.iol.org.uk English is the main teaching language. Language-specific tutorials are delivered in the respective languages. 10:00 15:00 every other Friday. 1,710 (includes a 10% discount) if paid in full by 16 September 2015 and 1,900 thereafter. Students will develop the required skills to work as professional public service interpreters in the legal field: Consecutive interpreting (in and out of English) Simultaneous interpreting (whispering into English and out of English) Sight translation (in and out of English) Written translation (in and out of English) Students will also learn about the professional legal settings applying to the DPSI English Law option (immigration, police, Courts) Morning sessions will be dedicated to learning interpreting skills applied to a specific legal setting. The sessions are interactive with the use of multimedia facilities. Afternoon sessions will be dedicated to language specific tutorials. Homework is set every session. Students will be able to use the London Metropolitan University s virtual platform to access teaching materials, exchange on forums and discussion, and be kept up-to-date with their tutors.
