Business Delivering banking services in Chile Founded in 1855, BancoEstado provides financial services to individuals and legal entities. As the largest banking institution network in Chile, BancoEstado also has the largest customer base. Its efforts to grow coverage meant the bank reached a total of 341 branches and 1,891 ATMs by the end of 2011. The network is complemented with 4,707 private ATMs, 919 balance inquiry terminals and 265 teller counters across its Chilean operation. BancoEstado is committed to pursuing its goal of providing access to banking services across the country; this is also fundamental to its overall mission as an enterprise. In the mid-term, the bank aims to establish access to financial services in a sustainable manner, reaching an increasing number of people and improving its efficiency and profitability rates. In order to become a global enterprise, a financial institution needs to be able to rely on the operations underpinning capital transfers and to identify and meet the needs of its customers. To achieve its goal of providing world-class services, BancoEstado has established eight divisions that are independent enterprises with their own objectives and strategies but share the corporate mission of the group. Challenge Greater data knowledge to provide better services BancoEstado needed to optimize the administration and management of the data defined in its systems in order to provide new technology solutions and improve service delivery. As part of a corporate transformation program, the System Architecture Sub-Management of BancoEstado established a project in 2009 aimed at optimizing its data architecture. We seek to share data knowledge and definitions in a unified manner so as to promote a common understanding within the institution, explains Gonzalo Vallejo, Head of the Data Architecture Department at the System Architecture Sub-Management of BancoEstado. Our role in the data architecture field is to ensure the governance of all the essential components of information particularly the handling of data that interacts with the bank systems, adds Vallejo. For many years, the financial institution had been using a modeling solution that automates system design tasks regarding data. However, the new demands for better services and greater efficiency led BancoEstado to update its existing solution CA ERwin. As part of the project, the company discovered exactly how its data is organized. This means the IT department can create new products aligned to customers needs and expectations, as well as develop more efficient systems and mitigate redundancy. 02
We needed an effective way of collaborating across roles and departments so as to manage their intricate infrastructure in a simple and profitable manner. In order to optimize service delivery, especially of its development teams, BancoEstado needed a solution that would enable the improvement of its data architecture. We needed to optimize administration and management of the data defined in our systems. Gonzalo Vallejo Head of the Data Architecture Department, System Architecture Sub-Management, BancoEstado Solution Collaborative development for business-aligned solutions As part of the project, BancoEstado decided to incorporate CA ERwin Modeling, which is used to automate system design tasks, the latest releases of CA ERwin Data Modeler and CA ERwin Data Modeler Navigator, together with a new data governance model. We examined other market options but learned that CA Technologies had developed new versions of its product, says Vallejo. The new solutions met our needs completely. CA Technologies offered the best added value and, by maintaining our existing solution, we obtained a better synergy with other tools and our solution providers, explains Vallejo. Towards the end of 2010, BancoEstado partnered with CA Technologies and its solution partner Quinaria to commence with the implementation. The solution has been in full operation since mid-2011. The CA ERwin suite delivers collaboration and optimization functionalities that enable BancoEstado to offer business-aligned solutions based on planned deadlines, budget and goals. Many of our suppliers currently use this tool, which enables them to work in a more aligned and integrated manner with our teams and methodology, explains the head of data architecture. CA ERwin Data Modeler helps organizations design data models that not only support high-level business needs but also ensure efficient database development and deployment across multiple platforms. 03
CA ERwin Model Navigator inquiry tool offers read-only access to a wide range of users who are not modelers, and has proved to be an excellent tool for business analysts. CA ERwin Data Modeler helped us to design data models that met our business needs. Gonzalo Vallejo Head of the Data Architecture Department, System Architecture Sub-Management, BancoEstado Benefits Improved data knowledge and governance The implementation of the new releases of CA ERwin Data Modeler and CA ERwin Data Modeler Navigator enabled BancoEstado to improve data knowledge and governance among its system developers. Any person who joins our teams can access the tools and have data architecture in a simple manner, says Vallejo. In addition, the financial institution obtained: Greater knowledge and data sharing Higher efficiency rates for development More agility in system development and maintenance Skills to share knowledge among departments and development teams, mitigating redundancy. In Vallejo s opinion, CA ERwin Data Modeler delivers a global view of data, as it allows systems to be designed as shared data repositories. This way, data is seen as a transferrable and useful asset to the whole organization, he points out. CA Technologies solutions not only contribute to the maintenance of the systems, but also support their development, and enables clients to take advantage of new products and technologies, making it easy for them to manage their financial products in a safe and efficient way. Vallejo points out that the tool is very stable and established in the market, which is why BancoEstado has had no difficulties with its utilization. 04
We have deployed the model in such a comprehensive way that we need frequent consultancy in order to ensure we make the most of the different functions available. We can rely on direct and efficient support from both CA Technologies and Quinaria. They understand the product very deeply, as well as its contribution to the business, he concludes.
