S URGICAL T ECHNOLOGIST The Surgical Technologist possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation of instruments and technologies to facilitate a physician s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Jobs are plentiful with employment opportunities in hospitals, surgical centers, and doctors offices. The following physical requirements are necessary to safely and accurately carry out the surgical technician duties: 1. Full range of motion of body joints; ability to stoop, bend, reach, pull, and push 2. Ability to execute controlled motor movements to provide direct care and emergency treatment to patients; e.g. transferring, lifting, and turning patients; providing hygienic care; and providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation 3. Fine motor ability and visual acuity in order to accurately manipulate needles and sutures finer than a human hair 4. Good peripheral vision 5. Ability to examine closely images or other forms of output created by diagnostic equipment 6. Ability to stand unassisted for eight continuous hours 7. MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY PRE REQUISITE Student must be able to meet the below requirements or complete the Medical Terminology prerequisites for entrance into the Surgical Technology Program. If student has previous Medical Terminology background: Student will need proof with a transcript of successful completion of a 2 or 3 credit hour Medical Terminology college course within the past 2 years. (Introduction to Medical term or a quick on line course will not be accepted) OR If greater than 2 years the Medical Terminology pre requisite exam must be taken with a passing grade. Exam cost $25.00 Dates Pre requisite exam is offered: May 18, 2015 Wednesday 6 8 PM (review at 5 pm if you would like to attend). Attend the Medical Term Course offered at EHOVE: We offer a blended course which is 24 hours of classroom instruction and also online instruction, a computer is required. Pre-Entrance Exam (complete prior to interview ) A pre-entrance exam is required of all applicants. There is a non-refundable payment of $81.00 due at the time of testing. After the exam, an appointment will be made for you to review your scores with the school counselor. Physical Examination (complete prior to interview) An appointment must be made with Firelands Corporate Health (419-557-5052) for a physical examination. Drug Scren (complete prior to interview) An appointment must be made with Firelands Corporate Health (419-557-5052) for a drug screen. Health Record Requirements Tuberculosis (TB)Screening (Must be completed prior to first day of class) A. You must receive a 2-step Mantoux test for the Tuberculosis (T.B.) screening. Both injections and readings must be documented. Check with your local health department, corporate health department of local hospitals, or your physician for this screening. B. If you receive a yearly T.B. screening from your employer, you must provide documented proof of your previous 2-step and all following yearly readings. C. If you are not able to get the T.B. screening or have tested positive in the past, a chest x-ray will have to be done with negative results, documented for school admission. Chest X- rays are valid for 5 years from the date of the X-ray. D. You are required to maintain a negative TB test in your file annually throughout your schooling. E. If you are not in compliance you will not be allowed to begin your clinical training. Hepatitis B Vaccine (Must be started prior to beginning of class) The Hepatitis B vaccine series must be started prior to class. This is a three (3) injection series. The first injection is given, four (4) weeks later the second injection is given. The third injection is given six (6) months after the first injection. All injections must be documented. Two injections must be completed to begin clinical rotation. If you have received the 3 shot series in the past, it is not necessary to repeat them. However, you must provide proper documentation of the vaccination dates on a health record or provide results of a positive titer. If you are not in compliance you will not be allowed to begin the clinical experience. Check with your local health department, corporate health department of the local hospitals, or your physician for vaccinations. Tetanus (Tdap) (Must be completed prior to first day of class) Documentation of a Tetanus vaccination within the last 10 years must be submitted for your file. MMR Titer (Must be completed prior to first day of class) Documentation of two (2) MMR vaccinations in a lifetime or proof of current Measles, Mumps & Rubella titer must be submitted for your file. If the titer indicates no immunity, the student must have a MMR vaccination and show proof on a health record. If you are not in compliance you will not be permitted to attend required clinical experiences. Varicella Titer (Must be completed prior to first day of class) Documentation of a current Varicella Titer must be submitted for your file. If the titer indicates no immunity, the student will be required to have 2 Varicella vaccines and show proof on a health record. If you are not in compliance you will not be permitted to attend required clinical experiences. Influenza (Must be completed in the fall) Documentation of a fall flu vaccine must be submitted for your file. If you are not in compliance you will not be permitted to attend required clinical experiences. Medical Insurance Coverage (Highly Recommended) If any student is sent to a Cleveland Clinic as a clinical site, a copy of your current Medical Insurance card is needed for your file. Internet Access All students are required to have internet access, Microsoft Word and a working, valid e-mail address. School Uniform Classroom Dress code requires students to dress appropriately. Your EHOVE shirt must be worn on all classroom days. Jeans must be intact (no holes). No sweat pants, shorts above the knee or stretch/wind pants are allowed. Skirts must be knee length. All facial piercings, tongue rings, multiple earrings and artificial nails will be removed while in the program. Clinical Each surgical department will provide scrubs.
