5 Enrollment Specialist Information Accepted as a Pre-surgical technology student Assigned to the Advising Center advisors while pursuing acceptance requirements to the program Office located at Main Campus- Room Walk in times & scheduled appointments available MUST attend an Advising Session once a semester to receive access code to register for classes
6 Admission Information: 2 nd Step Students must apply on-line to the Surgical Technology Program Surgical Technology applications are available on-line at our website: technology Applications are accepted on Dec. 1 st until Feb. 15 th of the following year. Check SCTCC web page to see when application is officially opened. Students are notified of acceptance to the program by mail sometime in April. Students NOT accepted will be placed on an alternate list in the event a spot opens. Those students not accepted will need to reapply on-line the following year.

8 The Surgical Technologist: Nature of the Position Stand, bend and or sit for long periods of time on 1 location with minimum breaks Lift a minimum of 20 lbs. Refrain from nourishment or rest breaks for periods up to 6 hours Demonstrate sufficient visual ability to load fine (10-0) suture onto needle holders with/without corrective lenses & while wearing safety glasses Demonstrate sufficient peripheral vision to anticipate & function while in the sterile surgical environment Hear & understand muffled communication without visualization of the communicator s mouth/lips & within 20 feet Hear activation/warning signals on equipment
9 The Surgical Technologist: Detect odors sufficient to maintain environment safety & patient needs Manipulate instruments, supplies, & equipment with speed, dexterity, & good eye-hand coordination Ambulate/move around without assistive devices Assist with and/or lift, move, position, & manipulate, with or without assistive devices the patient who is unconscious Communicate & understand fluent English both verbally & in writing Be free of portable communicable diseases & chemical abuse Demonstrate immunity to Measles, Mumps and Rubella, TB, Diphtheria- Tetanus, Hepatitis B, Chicken Pox or be vaccinated against these diseases. Receive annual influenza shot Nature of the Position

13 Fall Semester Courses SURG 1420 O.R. Techniques (3 credits) SURG 1424 O.R. Techniques Lab (4 credits) Attendance requirements O.R. Lab is 94% SURG 1404 Surgical Pharmacology ( 2 credits) SURG 1400 Medical Microbiology ( 2 credits) Study time open lab hours (minimum of 2 hrs. per week required) and homework Working approx. 20 hrs. per week, most students are not successful if they work full-time Past students have stated they didn t realize how much of a time commitment the program requires.
14 Fall Semester: O.R Lab Class Nails cut short, no artificial nails or nail polish No jewelry-includes earrings, rings, necklaces, watches Ear lobe stretchers and tongue piercing are unacceptable Open toe shoes are not permitted, socks must be worn with shoes Hair must be natural colors Visible tattoos may be required to be reasonably covered at all times. Good personal hygiene. No perfume or strong cologne. No gum chewing
15 Requirements for Clinical Emergency Cardiac Care EMSC 1480 or current American Heart Association Health Care Providers Basic Life Support card must remain current during clinical experience from January to June. CPR must be completed by the time you apply to program. Proof of CPR must be submitted with your program confirmation to reserve your spot in the program. Drug and Alcohol Acknowledgement of Policies (signed) Clinical sites retain the right to test students for drugs and alcohol Health care facilities typically drug test employees
16 Requirements for Clinical Background Checks: by Minnesota statue, background checks are required for all health students before entering clinical. May lead to dismissal from the program. Cost fee is $20 to student. Fee is applied when you register for Surg Electronic finger printing: starting Fall Will be able to do here at SCTCC in computer lab. Cost to student is $ Payment can be online with credit card, by check or money order- due at time of the printing. Cash will not be accepted as payment. If you have been arrested, charged or convicted of any criminal offense, you should investigate the impact that the arrest, charge or conviction may have on your chances of employment in the field you intend to study or on your chances to obtain federal, state, and other higher education financial aid.
17 Requirements for Clinical *Physical Exam Required prior to entering clinical. *DO NOT have the physical before Fall semester because mantoux must be current for clinical. Make appointments for Sept. *Mantoux needs to be a 2 step process. *Also need Hepatitis B (series of 3 shots) & Annual Flu shot. Need clinical documentation of Diphtheria-Tetanus/Pertussis, Chicken Pox/ Measles, Mumps and Rubella *Proof of current health insurance *Forms are due October 15, of the year you start the program. *No student will be given a clinical assignment if the physical or immunizations are not up to date.
18 Clinical Sites Students will spend the clinical experience at two of the following institutions: St. Cloud Hospital St. Cloud Surgical Center Princeton Willmar Hospital Glencoe Willmar Surgical Center Brainerd Brainerd Lakes Surgical Center Little Falls Mora Alexandria VA Medical Center Centra-Care Plaza Buffalo
19 Clinical Sites No specific clinical site can be guaranteed The student is responsible for his/her own housing and transportation Gas is very expensive-plan ahead Clinical may start as early as 6:00 am Students must maintain 80% average in Fall semester courses to enter their clinical rotation
20 Cost Tuition: Please visit SCTCC website for current tuition cost Fees $29.10 background check/ electronic finger printing Gasoline - $1500-$2000 Scrub Suit - $40 ( any color is fine, you will need it by 1 st week of class) / long sleeved snapped warm up jacket for scrub suit- $20 SCTCC ID may use as an ID badge for certain clinical sites Physical $200/varies depending on health insurance coverage Lab Supplies- $105 -disposable gowns, gloves, mask, cap, shoe covers, mayo cover,& scrub brushes (Latex free gloves more expensive) Any Color Leather Shoes cost varies, can cost up to $100 Books and printing of material Diploma $720 /AAS $720 AST Membership - $35 Certificate Exam Fees - $160 (requirement for graduation) AST Study Guide $45/ Practice certification exam-$40

22 Placement Placement office at SCTCC is available to assist you As a graduate, you have lifetime service from placement office Check with placement office for current statistics Employment may be found in small communities in Minnesota as well as in the Metropolitan area. Students have found jobs in other states as well. A WILLINGNESS TO RELOCATE WILL INSURE GREATER OPPORTUNITY FOR EMPLOYMENT!
23 Financial Aid Check with the Financial Aid Office as to when you should apply. You may need to apply more than once. Financial Aid office: (320) Scholarships available through SCTCC
24 Rubric Guidelines A point system is used for applicants considered for the Surgical Technology Program. Applicants considered for admission to the Surgical Technology program must have successfully completed all the acceptance requirements prior to the start of the program. (A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required). Preference will be given to students with all the acceptance requirements complete by Feb. 1st of the year applying for. Rubric scores can be enhanced by attending an information session, prior college degrees, successful completion of nursing assistant course, completion of 11 or more credits at SCTCC.
25 Limit of 1 repeat of course and only one course may be repeated. This means you will want to take your courses serious as grades will affect selection into the program. A helpful course to take is Introduction to Computers
