MSBM Newsletter Volume 1 Issue 1 October - December 2012 Rushane Ellington right (Top photograph) and Christopher Yeung left- ( photograph at left) proudly received their awards as top students of the MBA class of 2012 from Professor Paul Simmonds. Both students were awarded the Executive Director s Award for Best Overall Performance in the MBA.. Rushane also copped awards for achieving a distinction in the programme, best performance in the part time (Sundays) group, and outstanding performance in the Banking and Finance Concentration. Christopher walked away with awards for outstanding performance in the Banking and Finance Concentration, best performance in the for the MBA full time group and for achieving a distinction in the programme Congratulations Rushane and Christopher. The presentations were made at the recently held Awards Ceremony (for MBA, EMBA, Diploma, MBM and M.Sc. TPM Graduates) at the Mona Visitor s Lodge on Thursday December 11, 2012.
Page 2 MSBM Newsletter October-December 2012 The Department of Management Studies (DOMS), and The Mona School of Business (MSB) of The University of the West Indies, have merged to become Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) effective August 1, 2012--- a single business school within the Faculty of Social Sciences. The UWI Mona now hosts a first of its kind business school within the region; as it is the only Business school of this size and quality, offering programmes at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. An event to launch the merged entity was held on Monday September 24, 2012. The occasion was also used to introduce the new Executive Director, Professor Paul Simmonds. The event was well attended with a cross section of guests including representatives of the UWI community, business community, Government, alumni, media, staff and students. The evening s proceedings were chaired by Dr Densil Williams, Deputy Director of MSBM and other participants included, Prof Evan Duggan, Dean of FSS, Prof Gordon Shirley, Pro Vice Chancellor and Principal UWI Mona, Mr Don Wehby, Group CEO, Grace Kennedy Ltd and Distinguished Alumnus who brought the main address, Rev the Hon Ronald Thwaites, Minister of Education who brought greetings and Mrs Patsy Latchman Atterbury, another distinguished alumnus. The media was well represented at the event and subsequently three articles appeared in the print media and the story was also carried in the electronic media. The feedback received from the attendees indicated that the event was well received including, the ambience, entertainment and smooth flow of the proceedings. A new look for a new entity The new MSBM website was launched on November 24, 2012. Scotiabank s Small Medium Enterprise division has proudly partnered with Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) to facilitate our UWI Venture Challenge competition 2012. Through this competition final year UWI students are given the opportunity to formulate and pursue their entrepreneurial endeavours. Near Earth Delights Limited the winning team of this year s competition will be a manufacturing company which produces Giggles, a line of organic baby food purees and juices, for children 6-9 months old and solid foods and juices for children 9-48 months old. The baby food line is distinctive because it's made from organically grown fruits and vegetables found in the Jamaican diet. The idea for the baby food line came about while we were doing an individual Idea Generation Assignment for our New Ventures course. Each team member pitched their ideas to the group with a view to selecting one for that particular group project. After much deliberation, an idea was selected, and that was to produce an organic baby food line. The team work began and the idea was further developed through numerous hours of individual and collective work. Additionally, we can never forget the jokes in between when we trying to come up with a brand name. Alas, the name Giggles was conceptualized and since then it's been evolving into a project we are all exceptionally proud of and as is popular quoted the rest is history. Submitted by Aundre Moore

Page 7 Mona School s Business April June 2012 A new Centre of the University of the West Indies has been launched in the Mona School of Business and Management, The Mona ICT Policy Centre. The Ceremonial Launch took place on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 in the UWI Undercroft. The Mona ICT Policy Centre however is not exactly new. It represents the evolution of the Telecommunications Policy and Management (TPM) Programme, a former unit in the Mona School of Business, led by Prof. Hopeton Dunn. The TPM Programme has been leading in research and teaching in ICT policy since its inception seven years ago. The Programme will now transition into a much stronger, more permanent and stable institution, The Mona ICT Policy Centre. The Launch featured speeches from Professor Evan Duggan, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, UWI Mona; Major General Robert Neish, Executive Vice Chairman, Digicel Foundation and Professor Paul Simmonds, Executive Director, Mona School of Business and Management. The guest speaker was Honourable Julian Robinson, Minister of State, Ministry of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining. The logo (see image below) of the new Centre was also unveiled.

CONGRATULATIONS Prof Dunn A new book on Telecommunications and ICT Policy has been released by MSBM Lecturer and Director of the Mona ICT Policy Centre, Prof. Hopeton Dunn. The edited volume, Ringtones of Opportunity: Policy, Access and Technology in Caribbean Communications was published by Ian Randle Publishers and was launched late last year in separate ceremonies in Kingston and in Montego Bay. Ringtones of Opportunity is a compilation of academic literature from TPM s major research studies from 2006-2012 as well as contributions of related research from the Caribbean and the wider developing world. It is one of the first books to present scholarly research on the liberating opportunities offered by information and communications technologies in the Caribbean and the global south. The book is a key input into policy and management discussions on policy implementation and technology adaptation. It identifies a range of empowering development options in media literacy, e- fisheries, m-banking, mobile telephony, m-agriculture, teleworking, techno-driven environmental strategies and intellectual property reforms. The edited volume is available in the University Bookshop and on Amazon (both in paperback and on Kindle). ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Hopeton S. Dunn is Professor of Communications Policy and Digital Media in the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus and is Academic Director of the University s Master s Degree Programme in Telecommunications and Policy Management. Professor Dunn is Chairman of the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica. He sits on the editorial or advisory boards of several academic journals, including Telecommunications Policy and Critical Arts, where he is an Associated Editor. Professor Dunn is the Director of CARIMAC as well as Director of Mona ICT Centre in the Mona School of Business and Management.
