EDITORIAL Attention: More comfort in modern mobility! HASE BIKES. We ve been building trikes and tandems for more than 20 years, the last 13 in Waltrop. Can we really keep bringing out new products every year? Yes, we can. And how: in 2015, many of our new products and new features for existing products will be focused on comfort. Comfortable seats, easier pedaling, ingenious solutions for transporting things. The issue of comfort is nothing new for us at HASE BIKES. But in many ways, the next editions of several models have taken comfort to a whole new level. See for yourself! 2 For companies, youthfulness is defined not by age, but by their passion for innovation. And for Marec Hase, this passion is just as strong now as it was 25 years ago, when he was building his first bikes in his parents garage and winning the state youth science and technology competition Jugend Forscht. Since then, his Pino has become the absolute dream tandem for globetrotters and pedal-happy parents. And the Kettwiesel has long since earned the status of cult trike. The Hase Bikes staff has grown from two to more than 40 employees, and the manufacturing headquarters have moved from the garage to a historic coal-mine complex, where the company recently added a modern building. It houses a showroom, storage, and workshops, as well as the laboratories of the well-known EFBe institute, where all Hase Bikes models are tested for safety, durability, and reliability. And our range of applications continues to grow, with rehabilitation, commuting, daily errands, and cargo transport gaining importance. With our Klimax models, we became pioneers in the field of e-motorized, all-weather mobility, and last year s Pino Porter not only revolutionized cargo transport: it also proved like all of our products how versatile a bike can be with the right design. In early 2014, the Pino Porter was honored with the famous Red Dot Award, following in the tread marks of our Klimax 2K. Hase Bikes now sells its tandems and trikes over half the globe: in addition to the European market, with Germany, Belgium, France, the UK, Norway, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, we ve established our own sales network in the US. We ve also shipped products to Denmark, Finland, Italy, Austria, Sweden, Slovenia, Spain, and Hungary. And there are even Hase Bikes rolling through Indonesia and South Africa. Our virtual presence is growing as well: in April, we launched a new blog on the German version of our website. Here, we post information on the latest developments at Hase Bikes, as well as user stories and articles from the interesting and sometimes freaky world of cycling. We also let you in on the Waltrop buzz and keep you up to date with current events from the bicycle industry. Come check it out! For this year s catalog, we covered a lot of ground, traveling all over Germany and beyond, hearing personal stories about how our bikes and trikes offer new freedom and mobility, or even change lives. For two of the portrait stories, Kirsten Hase and our photographer, Holger Wens, flew all the way to South Africa a trip that was worth every mile.

EDITORIAL A team of strength and willpower In February, we received an email from Kevin Garwood and knew almost instantly: this was someone we just had to meet. Kevin is a sports-crazed South African from Johannesburg, known affectionately as Joburg by the locals. And he had a dream: to do sports and have adventures with his son, Nicholas. Nikki shared this dream. But they faced a challenge: Nikki has a handicap that actually makes it impossible for him to actively participate in sports. With a lot of passion and dedication, the two of them had found a way around this actually, and that was something we had to see for ourselves. So in May 2014, Kirsten and Holger headed off to South Africa, where they met Kevin, Nikki, and his mother, Cheryl. A warm-hearted family who immediately captured their hearts. The next few days were full of great experiences and photo shooting in the beautiful scenery of South Africa. Kevin and Nikki actually take part in major triathlon events as a team and are training for the famous and infamous Ironman Hawaii. A team of strength and willpower. And already celebrities in their field, as we noticed when they were greeted at their hotel. And then there s Rodger, whose ambitions are also impressive, but completely different. Not only is he a special bikes aficionado, as the only Hase Bikes dealer in all of Africa, he s also creating a new home with his family and friends: a small farm in the countryside. A few mud houses are already standing. And happy chickens roam free. But there s no running water. And Rodger s version of luxury is the new Kettwiesel. Rodger and his downhiller friend Justin Fiske test it at the nearby bike park. But the new trike is just as happy on the gravel roads that lead to Rodger s ranch. The stories about Team Garwood and Rodger can be found on pages 18 and 28. The following pages will be devoted to the new Kettwiesel models and the Shimano Steps bottom bracket motor. But there s so much more that we ve been busy developing and redesigning. And most products will have a whole new look: Paulo Mesquita, the brilliant designer who has already earned Hase Bikes several awards, came up with a fresh relaunch of the frame graphics and lettering. Even more important is the standardization of the front booms, which will be outfitted in a velvety matt black for all models. Its special markings are not only stylish but also practical: they make it easier to adjust the front boom to the rider s leg length. The Pino s new CNCmachined aluminum dropouts will be a real treat for bike techies: they optimize the tandem for the Rohloff hub and even provide torque support. Small details, but important: the new Children s Crankset now comes with rubber pads to keep the front boom scratch-free. And even more comfort: the NuVinci hub is now available for the Lepus and Kett wiesel: continuously adjusting the ratio to your personal riding style. In any case, our catalog is full of new and optimized products. We hope you enjoy reading about and, of course, riding our new models if you ve already been infected with our passion for versatile mobility and riding fun. NEW PRODUCTS AND FEATURES What you see here is a new generation. Visually understated, yet technologically stunning. An inconspicuous, matt gray, aluminum swing arm, an air shock, and a sway bar. The right combination of the right things in the right places. That s enough to take the KETTWIESEL to a completely new level. If you ve got a team of experienced engineers like the ones who work at HASE BIKES. A high-quality suspension system can increase a trike s range of uses by leaps and bounds. And if it s perfectly engineered, you don t even have to sacrifice any of the qualities the trike is known and loved for. With 80 mm of travel on the rear wheels, the new Kettwiesel models Evo and Kross achieve a level of comfort and riding safety on poor roads that baffles the mind. The best part: the trikes are still exhilaratingly quick and nimble. Thanks to the Kettwiesel geometry and cornering-stability control, they stick to the asphalt like glue and offer just as much cornering fun as their predecessors be it on the trail or in town. A completely new luggage and mobility solution will also be rolled out in 2015: the Roller Bag. The large version for the new Kettwiesel generation holds a whopping 100 liters. And when you re on foot, for example at the supermarket, you ll no longer have to lug heavy bags: the wheeled Roller Rack can be pulled like a shopping basket. An ingenious system for combining trike and transport. 5

NEW PRODUCTS AND FEATURES The Shimano Steps: Electric assist that harmonizes with our need for progress. And our concept of design. The new e-bike system fits perfectly to the KETTWIESEL. The bottom bracket motor provides extra power in the rear wheel, and the rider chooses the support level. It offers a silent, smooth ride and has a compact design that subtly suggests: e-power on board. Nominal output 250 W, battery capacity 418 Wh (36 V, 11.6 Ah). Those are the stats. But you ll soon forget all about them when riding with the Steps. In fact, you might only notice that the Kettwiesel rolls much more effortlessly than usual, up to 16 mph (25 km/h). The new Shimano motor is as quiet and inconspicuous as a tailwind. The Steps computer on the left handlebar tells you at a glance the selected power-support mode, the remaining range, and other data. The space-saving battery is mounted on the seatback and can be removed for charging. Any Kettwiesel built after 2006 can be equipped with the Steps system. If you re wondering why the new Kettwiesel silhouette looks so stylish and clean, it s the new quick-adjust mechanism. It encloses the powertrain almost completely and manages the chain length when adjusting the front boom for different riders. 7

Recommended for Tour/Fun Rehab Commuting Family Characteristics very maneuverable foldable fairing road traffic licensing with small license plate (in Germany) requires Class S driver s license (in Germany) regen braking = energy recovery, reduced brake wear e-motor 28 mph (45 km/h) KLIMAX 5K The fun factor isn t measured in PS but in how much you look forward to your daily commute. Not only can trikes like the KLIMAX replace a car. They can be so much fun that other considerations, like sustainability and energy efficiency, almost become secondary. Five hundred watts in the front wheel, two pedals, speeds of up to 28 mph (45 km/h). Sounds straightforward. The difference to other commuting concepts: it actually works and is even loads of fun. The twist-grip throttle on the handlebar lets you control the power coming from the hub motor. You decide whether and how strongly to pedal along. With the Crystalyte motor in the front wheel, you can hightail it to your destination. Even longer-distance commutes are no problem with the 540 Wh rechargeable battery (with a voltage of 48 V). But beware: you may make some drivers jealous when you zoom off from the stoplight. In city traffic, you re not only faster, happier, and more environmentally friendly: you also stay just as dry in the rain as your gas-guzzling peers. The specially developed Hase Bikes Foldable Fairing keeps you warm and dry in any weather: and it just takes a few seconds to put the top up and down again. For cloudbursts, the poncho can be quickly snapped into place to keep your collar dry. And thanks to the central console, you ll have everything under control and in view: batterycharge status, motor assistance level, speed, and data from the integrated Trelock bike computer. There is even a USB port that provides your GPS or MP3 player with power from the battery. For winter and downpours, just snap on the optional Poncho. High-tech folding fairing joint A lot of fine-tuning went into its design: the Fairing s most important feature allows for ingeniously easy mounting and versatility in wind and weather. Thanks to its robust construction, the Fairing is extremely durable and low maintenance. Headlight: Let it shine From Philips: with its 60 lux of light, the SafeRide for fast e-bikes not only offers optimum lighting power; it also illuminates the street with an especially clear and homogeneous circle of light. Additional Battery: Energy bar Double your mileage with motor assistance? No problem. The additional rechargeable lithium-ion power pack has the same properties as the standard battery. The extra 9 pounds (4 kg) are a piece of cake for the KLIMAX 5K. And one more energy bar never hurt. Lowrider: Low and be held Even more space for your luggage and supplies on tour: our Lowrider shifts more weight onto the front wheel without affecting the handling. Major advantage over standard luggage racks: lots of space between the pedals and panniers! 11

Recommended for Tour/Fun Rehab Commuting Family Characteristics very maneuverable foldable fairing e-motor 15 mph (25 km/h) KLIMAX 2K All-weather commuting with no exhaust, and no exhaustion. The KLIMAX is the hottest e-convertible on the market. With our 250 watts under the hood, you ll make better time on city streets than any of the 100 kw vehicles sitting in traffic jams. Riding fun included. Until now, it was almost impossible to combine sustainability, all-weather mobility, and fun under one unified transport solution. With our Klimax series, we even got it all under one fairing. And according to German road traffic laws, the 2K is just a bike with three wheels, requires no license plate, and can be used on bike lanes. Shopping trips, cycling tours, daily commutes: the 2K does it all in any weather. The Hase Bikes Foldable Fairing can be easily mounted for staying dry in rain and snow and if worse comes to worst, the Rain Poncho seals you in completely and opens with the Fairing like a gull-wing door for easy mounting. The hub motor provides three levels of assistance, starting as soon as you hit the pedals and switching off at 15 mph (25 km/h). You ll even enjoy riding up steep hills and pulling a trailer as well as staying active and physically fit without overexertion. The 400 Wh rechargeable battery can be tanked up in any power outlet in just over four hours. And when it comes to sportiness and fun: the 2K is the electro-brother of the Kettwiesel. KLIMAX 2K Suitable accessories: A complete overview can be found on pages 66-67 and on our website. From convertible to coupe: The Hase Bikes Foldable Fairing Nothing beats summer, sun, speed, and the wind in your hair but in our part of the world, this is more dream than reality. In order to be truly practical for everyday use, a vehicle has to offer protection in cool temperatures and especially in rain and snow. With minimal effort. The Foldable Fairing from HASE BIKES not only blocks wind and precipitation; it s also extremely practical, thanks to its foldability. Packed away in the compact Fairing Bag, it can be stowed on board, ready for use. The best rain protection is effortless and versatile The frame joints of the Fairing allow for a very compact size when folded. But they re still robust enough to provide the necessary elasticity, safety, and reliability. The best part: getting into the seat with the Fairing attached is as easy as hopping into a car. Just open the clip closure, take a seat, and pull the Fairing closed, letting the closure click into place. When the Fairing is no longer needed, open the two side clips, pull the front rod out of the nose cone, fold up the Fairing, and ride off in the sun. Poncho: Cozy and dry The Rain Poncho will keep you absolutely dry from the neck down even in a downpour. Just snap the fasteners onto the Fairing studs, hop into the seat as usual, pull down the Fairing, adjust the magnetic zipper, and off you go. 15

Recommended for Tour/Fun Rehab Commuting Family Characteristics recumbent-upright combination makes communication easy good visibility for both riders freewheel: ideal for families and rehab maneuverable owing to short wheelbase optional suspension two-part frame e-motor option PINO When the captain and the stoker share mobility, fun, and new experiences. On the PINO, you re a real team: the special seating arrangement and geometry make shared cycling fun ingeniously simple. The Pino is truly the most versatile bike for cycling duos or anyone who with the new Pino Porter option would like to manage all their daily shopping and transport by bike. The captain in the second row has the same unhindered view as the stoker; and the tandem is incredibly adjustable, making it possible for passengers who (still) can t pedal to ride in the comfy front seat: for example, children from 3 3 (100 cm) in height (with the optional Children s Crankset) or people with special needs. In the front row, you ll feel like a VIP guest as you lean back and roll into the panoramic horizon, floating comfortably on the suspension fork; thanks to the second freewheel, you can even take a break and let the captain pedal alone for a while. And the nimble team-machine is even transportable: every Pino model has a two-part frame that can be taken apart quickly and easily. The tandem s ultra-stiff tube joint is extremely heavy duty. On longer trips, the Luggage Rack and optional Lowrider carry supplies for the whole family and the hydraulic disc brakes ensure that everything stays safe and under control when the going gets lively. We ve also livened up the design. In addition, all Pinos now have a matt-black, anodized front boom with markings for quick lengthadjustment and new, replaceable dropouts for the easy installation of a Rohloff hub. Technical data: Total length: 83" 93" (210 237 cm) Total width: 25" (64 cm) Total height: 41" 43" (104 110 cm) depending on seat adjustment Seat height, front: 25" (64 cm) Bottom bracket height, front: 24½" (62 cm) Wheelbase: 57" (145 cm) Two-part frame/front boom: 7005 aluminum, with adjustable and replaceable dropouts in the rear (Patria patent) Max. load: 495 lb (225 kg) 17

PINO A double dose of iron Nicholas Garwood is a 15-year-old South African who happens to have cerebral palsy with spasticity. And a dad whose favorite pastime is competing in triathlons especially the Ironman with his son on the PINO. We met with Team Garwood at Ironman South Africa 2014. 18 Nikki sits on the front seat of the Pino, his Team- Garwood jersey flapping in the wind. He smiles and gestures with excitement, shouting, Go, Dad, go! Anyone who gets to know Nikki as we did during our visit to South Africa can t help noticing how boundless his energy is. And how much motivation someone like him can bring to a team. Nikki has a way of expressing emotion without reservation. And a contagious love of life. In this respect, his handicap is secondary. His condition, which was caused by brain damage from a lack of oxygen in the womb, has affected his mental development and the muscle coordination of his arms and legs, but Nikki is able to speak and read and is a whizz on his ipad. His father, Kevin, who is now 51 and devilishly fit, quit his job when Nicholas was just 3 years old. He wanted to have more time for his son. And it wasn t long before the two of them were inseparable. But something was still missing. I always thought how nice it would be to do sports with Nikki, said Kevin. But the question was how? His pastor s wife sent him a video about an American father and son who compete in triathlons. That was a revelation! I asked Nikki if he wanted to do something like that with me, and he said, You bet I do! That s when father and son became Team Garwood. Kevin began training. Initially with little success. Then Nikki started riding along in a large jogger that converted into a bike trailer. This allowed them to train together and the motivation that Nikki contributed was enormous. The bike trailer wasn t an ideal solution, but the team didn t give up. They competed in short-distance duathlons (running and cycling) and triathlons (running, swimming, and cycling). It wasn t until we found the Pino that we became a real team on the bike, beamed Kevin. The tandem works perfectly for us: it s built to support Nikki s legs in the front, and we both have a panoramic view and can easily speak to each other. I can even feed him when he gets hungry. Then came their first Ironman South Africa in 2012 unfortunately with weather problems in the form of strong winds and they weren t allowed

PINO to do the cycling leg. That did not deter them, however. They did Ironman South Africa again in 2013 and finished it to tremendous applause from the crowds. It s race day, April 6, 2014, and Team Garwood has a lot on their to-do list: 2.3 miles (3.7 km) of swimming in the Indian Ocean followed by 112 miles (180.25 km) of cycling, and a marathon run of 26.2 miles (42.195 km). 6:45 a.m.: shouts of joy from Nikki as his kayak is pushed into the water. 7:00 a.m.: the swimmers start. Kevin hooks the towline to his belt and sprints into the ocean. Soon, a red kayak can be seen meandering through the throngs of competitors. They finish the swim in an impressive time of 1 hour and 15 minutes. Nikki s mother, Cheryl, helps him change clothes. Then he s strapped into the front seat of the Pino, snacks are packed, and off they go! In spite of its lightweight racing wheels, the tandem with two riders has twice the weight of the individual competitors with their triathlon machines. And today, the headwind is extremely strong on some parts of the course. But Team Garwood pedals on. Go, Dad, go! Nikki is still brimming with enthusiasm and keeps Kevin going strong. The two long uphill stretches on the 56-mile (90km) lap set them back. They have to make up time! Cheryl calls out to us when we arrive at the cycling course. We cheer for Team Garwood as they race past. Nikki and Kevin give it their all once again on the second lap. But it s not enough: they finish the bike leg in 9 hours and 10 minutes, a mere 10 minutes over the cut off time, and are taken out of the competition. Kevin is unfazed, but not Nikki. He cries bitterly, and his parents have a hard time consoling him. Nevertheless: They re both winners! The encouraging words come from the commentator, who applauded Team Garwood even before the race began. The dynamic duo proved their status as true Ironmen long ago: in terms of team spirit and as an example of what can be accomplished by working together with or without a handicap. 19

But not on the bike: the PINO can easily shoulder four large panniers and still handle like a charm. The Tubus rear rack and especially the Lowrider under the front seat provide for a low center of gravity and impressive stability. Groceries for the barbecue, a case of beverages, and still enough space for picnic blankets: the PINO PORTER is the logistics expert among tandems. The huge PORTER BAG has a 24 capacity of 80 L or up to 120 L when using the cover compartment. And it would take a lot of sausages and steaks to reach the weight limit of 88 lb (40 kg). If, after the party, you re reassigned to designated driver, just fold up the bag, stow it behind the seat, and you re ready to take passengers. Double Kickstand: It s important to find the perfect balance Loading and unloading requires stability. That s why we equipped the PORTER with a wide-stance double kickstand. It keeps the bike upright and the cargo safe. Porter Rack: Impressive loadability, superior handling You don t have to carry those heavy bottles in the BAG: the foldable PORTER RACK can handle up to 88 lb (40 kg) of bulk cargo. And when loaded, it gives the bike an extra low center of gravity, meaning: smooth and safe handling. Porter Rackbag: Dry from all sides On shopping day, there s no such thing as bad weather with the PORTER RACK- BAG. It creates a dry zone, encasing the unfolded rack and all its cargo. The double kickstand remains fully functional. Versatility that forgives forgetfulness You forgot to drop off the dry cleaning and have to make a second trip but your partner is already waiting for a ride to soccer practice. No problem with the PINO: PORTER BAG off, partner on, laundry in the RACKBAG, and off you go.

PINO ACCESSORIES Porter Bag: Voluminous, versatile, and even vanishable The base stats: rainproof, dustproof, and an 80L capacity, which, thanks to an extra zipper in the cover, can be expanded to 120 L. The entire BAG weighs a mere 4.9 lb (2.2 kg) but can hold 88 lb (40 kg). Inside, it can be divided into sections or used as a single, large compartment able to accommodate objects up to 35 (90 cm) in length. When fully loaded, the PINO PORTER handles like a tandem with two riders. Children s Crankset: Kid power! The Children s Crankset can be easily mounted to the frame and adjusted to your child s leg length with a quickrelease mechanism. Just pull the chain around the chainring, and zoom off with kid power. Min. height: 3 3 (100 cm). Safety harness included. Additional accessories: A list of all available accessories can be found on pages 66-67 and on our website. Freewheel Switch-off: More movement In rehabilitation, it is often sensible not to interrupt movement. This is where our Freewheel Switch-off comes in: this little mechanism keeps legs in motion. Simple principle, major effect. Double Grips: Sporty or ergo your choice! Whether joy ride or compe tition: with the additional handlebar grips, the pilot can alter his or her position as desired for optimal comfort without having to adjust the handlebars. Double Kickstand: Wobbleproof Developed by HASE BIKES, loved by touring cyclists everywhere. The bicycle is braced for packing and unpacking and absolutely untippable, even when the front passenger has the fidgets. Can hold a total of 220 lb (100 kg), including lively loads. Lowrider Rack: Tutti completi! The Lowrider Rack under the recumbent seat carries one small and one large pannier on each side which, with the rear wheel rack, brings the total capacity to 6 panniers! And the low position of the load between the axles means safe and easy handling! Fairing: Great climate for stokers You can t leave a hardworking co-pilot out in the rain. A few clicks and snaps is all it takes to mount the Fairing to the frame, and keep the rain or drizzle off the stoker. Getting in and out of the seat is just as easy as always, and the stocker can even enjoy the Fairing s rearview mirror. No more rain? Then the Fairing folds away almost as easily as an umbrella and fits nicely into the handy Fairing Bag. Another argument: even the captain will stay dryer 25

Recommended for Tour/Fun Rehab Commuting Family Characteristics very maneuverable, smooth-riding high level of safety thanks to low center of gravity available with full suspension space-saving when parked on end usable in tandem and with trailer e-motor option KETTWIESEL Cobblestones? Bring em on! From slalom specialist to comfort pro. The KETTWIESEL is legendary for its exhilarating performance. The new models are just as nimble, but with maxed-out comfort. One wheel in front, two in the back, and a happy rider in between the classic delta form makes the Kettwiesel fascinatingly dynamic and stable in cornering. It feels just as much at home on smooth asphalt as it does on daredevil ramps or bumpy farm tracks. And this is where the newly developed rear- suspension system for the models Evo and Kross really comes into its own. The two swing arms of the independent wheel suspension system with cornering-stability control are supported by air shocks. The system offers a full 80 millimeters of travel. The result: a magic carpet ride. And there s also more comfort when it comes to folding: thanks to a new quick-release, the Kettwiesel seat is now easier to fold and stow. With the Quickstick axles, the wheels can be removed in just seconds (does not apply to Evo and Kross). The front section of the chain is now fully enclosed meaning no grease on the pant legs and, thanks to a new, inconspicuous quick-adjust system, it s even easier to adjust the trike to different riders without having to change the chain. More comfort for the eye: the front boom on all models is now an elegant matt black with special markings that help you find the right length adjustment for your legs no more guesswork. Technical data for basic version (without suspension): Total length: 63" 81" (160 205 cm), without front wheel 54" (137 cm) Total width: 34" (86 cm) Total height: 31" (80 cm), with seat folded down: 21" (53 cm) Turning circle: left 10'10" (3.30 m), right 11'6" (3.50 m) at mean length adjustment Seat height: 18" (46 cm) Bottom bracket height: 18 ½" (47 cm) Pack size: 63" 81"x21"x34" (160 205x53x86 cm) Wheelbase: 46" 64" (116 162 cm) Frame/fork: 7046/7005 aluminum Front boom: 6061-T6 aluminum Max. load: 265 lb (120 kg) 27

KETTWIESEL Cape Town s first KETTWIESEL KROSS Rodger Duffett is the only HASE BIKES dealer in South Africa, a country where specialized bikes are like birds of paradise, and the dealers are absolute mavericks. On our visit to Rodger, we brought along a new KETTWIESEL KROSS. He took it straight to the downhill park for a test ride. And decided to keep it. 28 We re so close to the famous Table Mountain that it feels like we could reach out and touch it. This flat-topped massif towers over Cape Town and is visible from practically every street corner. We re standing in the glaring sunlight in the middle of the legislative capital of South Africa in front of Rodger Duffett s house. He sells specialized bikes to customers all over the southern part of the continent. Which sounds like a big business but is actually quite modest: The market for special bikes in South Africa is very small, he tells us later in the shady indoors. But demand is steadily rising, and Rodger is very optimistic about the future. Selling bikes is actually his second job: he spends most of his work week at the University of Cape Town, looking after high-performance computing systems in the context of a large-scale research project on climate change. Rodger s passion for environmental protection, nature, and sustainability is evident in everything he does. And these interests are shared by the whole family. The kids, Amy (9) and Bevan (11), are already

KETTWIESEL helping out with the bike business. For them and Rodger s wife, Alisa, being out and about on two or three wheels is the ultimate in family fun as is their communal farm project: living in wooden huts and tepees on what was once a plot of fallow land not far from Cape Town. This is something we just have to see! The last few miles take us over sand and gravel farm tracks to a farm with several old huts and stables. New houses are being built using light straw/clay construction methods, aka Leichtlehmbau. Running water? Not here. But there s electricity and the essential Internet connection. The farm is being planned and built in cooperation with two other families, one of which is already living on site. We ve also had chickens and geese in suburbia, but they re now enjoying life out in the open spaces, explains Rodger. Far away from anything that we would call civilization, the families are gradually fulfilling a dream of life in harmony with nature. We re impressed. At the nearby downhill park, Rodger discovers yet another passion: offroading with the Kettwiesel Kross. Together with his friend Justin, who is an experienced downhiller, he was one of the first to test ride the new trike. Mountain biking is a popular sport in South Africa. But mountain triking? The new, full-suspension Kettwiesel Kross is right up Rodger s alley. He whizzes down the slopes and shoots around banked curves, not missing a single pothole. With sand spraying off his wheels, he races past us, disappearing again into a thick cloud of dust beyond the next curve. Outstanding, he tells us later. The new suspension makes the trike an absolute offroad fun-machine. Next lap we try waving him in for a pit stop to tell him more about the new design features, but apparently Rodger prefers discovering them for himself. It looks like loads of fun and like, with his enthusiasm, it won t be hard winning over his first Kettwiesel Kross customers. We say goodbye, but the first Kross series-production model stays behind in South Africa. With Rodger in the wilderness. Also a nice thought. 29

KETTWIESEL CUSTOMIZED Gliding on air: Swing arm with enclosed drive With a rear suspension system, the KETTWIESEL is transformed into an all-road vehicle: bumps and potholes are smoothed out and the comfort of the recumbent seat is optimized. The drive is enclosed in the aluminum swing arm. Also available with Differential (two-wheel drive). Other frame option: no suspension A perfect fit: Three wheels, a cult frame and the rest is up to you Exhilarating performance is built into every Kettwiesel. But there are plenty of options that allow you to customize the trike to your own needs, preferences, and plans: touring fans, for example, will appreciate a gear system with evenly spaced gear ratios. Anyone who spends a lot of time on unsurfaced roads and trails may want to add a differential for powering both rear wheels. No matter how you envision your dream trike, you ll find the most important component options here. Shimano Steps e-motor: One giant leap for trike-kind The new 250 W e-motor with a top speed of 15 mph (25 km/h) harmonizes perfectly with your pedal power. Advantage over front motors: significantly more traction on the drive wheel. Rohloff Speedhub: A true paradigm shift A hub with great qualities: changing gears with a twist of the wrist, exceptional shifting comfort, extremely low maintenance, and unbeatable durability. Rohloff packs it all into a special HASE BIKES housing. Spinner Grind I Front Suspension: Why gallop when you can glide? The optional Spinner suspension fork in its reinforced version (steel shaft) will even satisfy comfort connoisseurs. Forget the pothole slalom: from now on, it s easy gliding over every road. Coaster Brake: Legwork When the legs are more mobile than the hands, the coaster brake ensures full braking power with high tech: pedaling backwards transfers the leg power to a hydraulic disc brake. SON: Amps to go The light and smooth-rolling SON 20 R hub dynamo is the most reliable electricity source for bikes and trikes. Constant power supply in any weather, maintenance-free, and durable. The best ecopower for outdoors. Differential: Power for two Specially designed by Marec Hase for the KETTWIESEL, the Differential transfers the pedal power to both rear wheels. It shows its true colors on rough terrain or muddy slopes, where others lose traction. Other motor option: Heinzmann Directpower e-motor with lithium-ion battery, incl. mount and charger Other gear options (e.g.): 9-speed derailleur with Microshift bar-end shifter Gear hub, 8-speed Shimano Nexus Fixed gear hub with friction clutch Other fork options: Fork 20" aluminum black Fork 16" black Other brake options (e.g.): Mechanical disc brakes Avid BB7 Hydraulic disc-brake Avid Elixir 3 Coupled brakes, hydraulic braking for rear wheels, mechanical for front Other lighting system option: Hub dynamo: Shutter Precision, Taillight: B & M Toplight Flat Plus, Headlight: AXA Pico 30-T Steady Auto, LED, standlight Other drive option: Single-wheel drive (no differential) Additional options: A list of all available options can be found on pages 64-65 and on our website. 31

KETTWIESEL ALLROUND Features and equipment: Brakes: Avid BB7 mechanical disc brakes with parking brake lever Wheels: 20", Hubs: Hase Bikes Quickstick (rear), Rims: double wall with eyelets, Spokes: Sapim, Tires: Schwalbe Marathon 47x406 Gears: 9-speed Shimano Tiagra, SRAM with Centera twist shifter Crankset: Truvativ Touro 52 tooth Lighting system: Hub dynamo: Shutter Precision, Taillight: B & M Toplight Flat Plus, Headlight: AXA Pico 30-T Steady Auto, LED, standlight Fenders: SKS black matt Weight: 39.4 lb (17.9 kg) Colors: RAL 3002 Carmine Red matt/powdercoated, front boom black anodized with length-adjustment markings Cruising, stunt riding, cornering: The Allround does it all Like all of our top-sellers, the ALLROUND is available off the rack : its features and equipment are standardized, which means shorter delivery times than the customized trikes, which must be built to order. Nevertheless, the ALLROUND is a real whiz, like all KETTWIESELs. Thanks to the center of gravity between the rear wheels, the cornering stability is exceptional. The disc brakes guarantee crisp, safe stops, and the new quickadjust frame makes it even easier to change riders. The chain is almost completely protected and your pant legs, too. For transport, the seat can be folded down in a flash, and the wheels are easily removed with special quickrelease mechanisms. In storage, it sports a small footprint balanced on its rear wheels. Team-building à la trike: Hitch up and wiesel away Bonding with another person is a special experience, but not always easy. Unless, of course, you happen to have two KETTWIESELs and a Universal Coupling: just mount the Coupling, remove the front wheel of the second KETTWIESEL, attach, and go. And team-wieseling isn t just about doubling the fun: riders with coordination problems, for example, can enjoy the exhilarating KETTWIESEL feeling in the towed trike without having to worry about the controls. With a little practice, riding in tandem can be even faster than going solo that s because the pedal power is the same, but the wind resistance is greatly reduced. 32

KETTWIESEL VILLAGE Features and equipment: Brakes: Avid BB7 mechanical disc brakes with parking brake lever Wheels: 20", Hubs: Hase Bikes Quickstick (rear), Rims: double wall with eyelets, Spokes: Sapim; Tires: Schwalbe Marathon 47x406 (front), Big Apple 55x406 (rear) Gears: 8-speed internal gear hub Shimano Nexus Premium with twist shifter Crankset: Truvativ 170 mm 32 tooth Lighting system: Hub dynamo: Shutter Precision, Taillight: B & M Toplight Flat Plus, Headlight: AXA Pico 30-T Steady Auto, LED, standlight Fenders: SKS black matt Weight: 43 lb (19.5 kg) Color: RAL 9005 Deep Black matt/powdercoated, front boom black anodized with length-adjustment markings Village: Gear-shifting comfort and durability in a single hub The top-seller model VILLAGE is one up on the ALLROUND: the eight-speed gear hub from Shimano. It makes the trike exceptionally comfortable and easy to ride. But there s more: the eight gears are packed in a hub clean and protected which, unlike a derailleur, is practically maintenance-free. The almost completely enclosed chain also lasts longer. And there s no derailleur cage to worry about for example, when taking the trike on a train or riding on bumpy farm tracks. Speaking of farm tracks: that s where you ll really appreciate the smooth ride of the cushy Big Apple tires Hop on and enjoy: The completely carefree Kettwiesel The easily adjustable recumbent seat with its new cover design, the ergonomic positioning of the seat and handlebars, the shifting with a gentle twist of your wrist, the safe yet extremely nimble chassis and the fact that, any time you stop, you can leave your feet comfortably on the pedals and, when on tour, you always have your very own, comfy picnic chair with you. And transporting luggage in the Ortlieb trunk behind the seat is child s play. Be it groceries, camping supplies, or office clothes the contents stay dry and clean. 33

KETTWIESEL EVO Full suspension! Technical Data: Total length: 69" 87" (176 221 cm), without front wheel 54" (137 cm) Total width, total height, turning circle, frame, front boom: see standard Kettwiesel Seat height: 19¾" (50 cm) Bottom bracket height: 20" (51 cm) Pack size: 69" 87"x21"x34"(176 221x53x86 cm) Wheelbase: 52" 70" (132 178 cm) Fork: suspension fork Spinner Grind 1 Max. load: 265 lb (120 kg) Features and equipment: Suspension: Hase Bikes Evo independent wheel suspension with sway bar and Hase Bikes air shocks Brakes: Rear: Tektro Auriga Twin hydraulic disc brakes with integrated parking brake, Front: Avid BB7 mechanical V-brake with parking brake lever Wheels: 20", Hubs: Hase Bikes Quickstick (rear), Rims: double wall with eyelets, Spokes: Sapim; Tires: Schwalbe Marathon 47x406 (front), Big Apple 55x406 (rear) Gears: 8-speed internal gear hub Shimano Nexus Premium with twist shifter Crankset: Truvativ 170 mm 32 tooth Lighting system: Hub dynamo: Shutter Precision, Taillight: B & M Toplight Flat Plus, Headlight: AXA Pico 30-T Steady Auto, LED, standlight Fenders: SKS black matt Weight: 54 lb (24.5 kg) Colors: RAL 9016 Traffic White matt/powdercoated, front boom black anodized with length-adjustment markings Evolution has found a solution to cobblestones Very good concepts shouldn t be changed. Unless they can be made even better. This is how we came up with the full-suspension KETTWIESEL EVO. The new rear-suspension swing arms with their 80 millimeters of travel absorb all of the road shock, instead of the rider s derrière. The result: the trike is now just as much fun on bumpy trails as it is on asphalt bike paths. The independent wheel suspension responds with extreme sensitivity, smoothing out the potholes, curbs, and cobblestones that would send many other full-suspension trikes bouncing. And in spite of all that extra comfort, the trike is still a cornering demon, through and through. Thanks to the cornering-stability control system i.e. sway bar like the ones used in automotive design, cornering fans can rest assured that the known-and-loved KETTWIESEL feeling remains, with no body roll to ruin the fun. The air shocks can be adjusted to the weight of the rider and cargo meaning just as much riding comfort and safety when carrying heavy loads. Luggage to go: The Roller Bag Even the luggage system of our new trike generation is fully (r)evolutionized: The ROLLER BAG, available in both 50 L and 100 L versions, is a luggage compartment that can be hung on the trike with a click and so much more. The zipper can be operated with one hand, and the BAG has a large opening. It s also completely waterproof. The ROLLER RACK, with its wheels and fold-out pull handle, is always attached and transforms the BAG into a multifunctional carryall: e.g. a shopping cart or wheeled sports bag. For example, which path to take. The indirect route along the main road or the shortest path, meaning a smorgasbord of mud, tree roots, and bumpy, gravel farm tracks. The new KROSS loves both styles: with its wide, knobby tires and full suspension system, including independent rear-wheel suspension, the KROSS goes offroad with gusto, offering vehicle dynamics that SUV drivers can only dream of. And the full suspension will make comfort fans feel like they re riding on cloud nine. All the toughness, freedom and safety of an SUV The brake discs, with their 160 mm diameter, will let you cruise around the corners in complete control with plenty of safety to spare. Even on steep downhill stretches. And to prevent spinning wheels on the uphill, the standard KROSS is equipped with a differential drive. With two fat knobbies biting into the trail, you ll keep moving forward be it sand, gravel, or dirt. Especially when it feels like rolling from A to B in your favorite lounge chair. With the Lepus, this is possible even for people who have never spent much time on a bike or trike. Who are simply looking for a practical option for self-propelled mobility or a way to become mobile again. It all begins with the lowered front boom for easy mounting: just sink into the comfortable mesh seat, which can be adjusted to a height of 20 to 28 (50 70 cm) and offers superb visibility in traffic. You will enjoy riding with excellent stability far surpassing that of conventional rehab trikes and gliding down the road on a pillow of soft suspension. Or just leaning back in your seat at the stoplight without having to dismount. Whether you re travelling to an event, the office, or the supermarket: behind the seat is enough space for everything and in the voluminous, waterproof bag (accessory), your supplies will make it from A to B without getting wet. Comfort, low maintenance, and user-friendliness are also qualities of the gear system: with the 8-speed, smooth-running Shimano Nexus Premium hub, you can change gears in any situation with a click of the easy-to-use twist shifter. LEPUS Something really snazzy with a motor! Ulrich Trappmann has spent his whole life in the Ruhr region. He s sentimental about the past but still appreciates the many things that are now possible thanks to modern technologies. After a heart-valve operation, he began a second life thanks to a lot of exercise. Both on and off his LEPUS. 40 Dortmund-Hörde is changing. The goliath Hermannshütte steelworks was once the most dominant feature of this former town, both before and long after its incorporation into Dortmund in 1928. The architecture still echoes this past, with many working-class housing estates. Its people have the typical Ruhrpott charm: not very talkative, but straightforward, warm-hearted, and dependable. This description also fits quite well to Ulrich Trappmann even if in his former life he wasn t a steelworker but a computer scientist. The 67-yearold has lived in Dortmund for practically his entire life, returning to Hörde two years ago. His visitors can learn a lot about the history of this changing district, and even some things about Trappmann himself. His walls are adorned with historical photos; he can even show off a machine or two from back in those days. He feels a strong connection to the history of the objects and photos. He keeps the memories alive. There are even daguerreotypes, photographic images from the early days of

LEPUS photography; some show ancestors from four generations back. At the same time, the physically fit pensioner happily embraces many aspects of modern life in a way, he s had to. Working fulltime with volunteer activities at night; you don t get home until about 11. All that dedication and constant stress eventually took its toll on the stoutly built Dortmunder: in 2000, he needed an artificial heart valve. After the surgery, it took a long time for me to start feeling better. With more exercise, the vitality finally returned. And then I said to myself: from now on, you re only going to do things that are good for you. I decided to buy myself something fun and healthy, snazzy and comfortable: I wanted to get in and out of the seat with ease and really enjoy the ride. That was the most important thing. And I wanted it to be rideable for many years, even if someday my sense of balance isn t so good. To make a long story short: he bought a Lepus. And he rides it every day, as long as the temperatures are not too close to freezing. A cushy suspension and e-motor support in the front wheel that was a must, he smirks. Today, Trappmann makes practically all of his dayto-day trips by trike. But the errands are only an encore: The most important activity is my daily tour: I can always get in at least 30 to 40 kilometers, he explains enthusiastically. For longer excursions, he swings by his sister s place to charge his battery over a cup a coffee. And he often rides along the lakefront: where the Hermannshütte once dominated the view, a huge new district is being built around the artificial Phoenix Lake. The east side will be a modern, life-stylish residential area with recreational activities; and in the west, a modern industrial complex is being built with companies from the microsystem-technology sector. Every time I ride the Lepus along here, I discover something new, says the pensioner with a smile. He remembers every detail of the past landscape, and can t wait to see how it evolves in the future. 41

Ideally with as much comfort as possible. Independent mobility can be a great source of joy, but it doesn t get any easier over the years. Especially when it s not just about getting from A to B, but about staying truly active. That fits to the LEPUS COMFORT, with its lowered front boom, which makes it much easier to get in and out of the seat. Comfortable things are more likely to become part of your everyday life. And comfort is about more than just the seat: it s also the intuitive controls, the safe handling, and the plush suspension provided by adjustable air shocks. Or the fact that you can stay seated any time you feel like stopping even if it s just to admire some artsy postcards. There are two sides to every transport solution. Ideally, two good sides. Big things can carry a lot of cargo. While small things are easy to transport. The LEPUS can do both: in its trunk behind the seat, there s space enough for a several days worth of groceries, or even a whole tray of seedlings. Nevertheless, the trike itself takes up very little space: in a matter of minutes, it can be folded up to a size that fits into almost any compact hatchback. And in no time at all, it s unfolded and ready to take you on short or medium-length trips. There s also joy in knowing that your vehicle will literally carry you from door to door and not leave you searching endlessly for a close parking spot. If you do have a little walking to do: walking sticks and similar devices can be transported with the optional holder. 44

Recommended for Tour/Fun Rehab Commuting Family Characteristics child trailer, trike, and cargo trailer in one jogger option (exception: Trets Reh) high level of safety TRETS Joy supplies a heck of a lot of power. And the TRETS adds the versatility. Our mini-trike is an absolute fun machine for younger riders. For you, it s a jack of all trades: a pedal-powered child trailer, a cargo trailer, or with optional features even a jogger. Playgrounds always have a fence or a wall. The Trets has no such borders: and children of all ages are welcome. With the infant carrier, even the tiniest passengers can sit safely in the Trets Jogger, Buggy, or Trailer. Later, from a height of about 3 3 (100 cm), they can pedal along or even zoom around the block on their own three wheels. And the fun goes on until about 4 11 (1.50 m). But with truly functional versatility, it all comes down to details. Like adaptability: the handlebar length can be adjusted to the arms of the young pilot, and in the Buggy or Jogger version, it doubles as a push bar with fully functional brakes. Or transportability: just pop off the front wheel and steering column, fold down the seatback and the Trets fits easily into any trunk. Because you ll never want to leave the trike at home! And usability: young Trets pilots shift like the pros. The gear system either 7-speed SRAM derailleur or 8-speed gear hub turns the trike into a turbo, and the twist shifter makes shifting as easy as do-re-mi. And most importantly: whether hitched or freestyle, the Trets low center of gravity and ingenious geometry make it so safe to ride that every young adventurer will feel secure on the adjustable mesh seat. The special model Trets Reh supports children with disabilities or in rehabilitation. Furthermore it s now officially recognized as a medical aid in Germany, which makes it more affordable for parents (see page 51). TRETS Developmental turbo boost on three wheels Doctors have known for years: cycling is excellent for a child s development. Both motor and mental skills are trained, or at least stimulated. And the right vehicle can even open up whole new worlds. As Konrad s smile will tell you. 48 Konrad Ulbrich is riding his Trets With gusto! Confidently, he zooms past pedestrians and our photo team in the market square full throttle but always navigating with great care. It s obvious he s got his vehicle under control. But this is a recent development. The bright-eyed five-year-old with a wild mop of flaxen hair under his colorful helmet has osteopathia striata. This rare disease caused by a genetic defect is often associated with secondary conditions that can delay mental development and lead to an array of other disorders. Konrad doesn t have much feeling in his legs; his shoes with special orthopedic supports are held securely in the toe clips so that his feet can t slip off. He occasionally needs a ventilator to help him breathe. Which is another reason for the Trets, says his mother, Cordula Ulbrich. We can keep the ventilator in the bag behind the seat. As an engineer, she did extensive research into the various options for shared mobility. I, myself, have always been a huge bike fan, she says, and I didn t want to give up

TRETS being able to cycle as a family. In the beginning, this was only possible with a trailer. Which is how they got around with Konrad s brother, Marvin, who is now 25 years old and shares the same disorder. Then a year ago, they bought a Trets. At first, we either pushed the trike or used it as a trailer in which he could also help with the pedaling, she explains. This is how Konrad became familiar with almost all variations of the Trets. Since the end of 2012, Konrad has been flying solo on the trike. And he s made huge progress in his development: the ventilator which connects directly to his windpipe below the voice box is now only needed sporadically. As a result, he s also finding it easier to speak and, in many areas, is now on the same level as his peers in kindergarten. They think my Trets is cool! says Konrad when he talks about his friends there. The fairhaired bundle of energy is slowly discovering a whole new world and even more of his independence especially in the time when he s not on the ventilator. After all, he also has various other activities and interests: right beside his playground is the Athlete s Hall Konrad spends time in this sport s club working on his strength and endurance. And before the workout, they always stop in town for his favorite ice cream: a Blue Smurf. When we arrive, the kids at the ice cream parlor marvel at his Trets, and the magic word can be heard: cool! Konrad is unfazed, taking it all in stride. He s used to the attention he gets in public. But he can t resist showing off his keen riding skills, coming to a screeching halt just inches from the steps to the ice parlor. He s now able to do just about everything the other kids can do and is having fun exploring his world. The Trets helps him do this. The ability to be independent on wheels comes with a huge dose of joy which he always shares generously with others. 49

The pedals can be slid individually along the crank for separate adjustment, optimizing rehabilitation training or allowing the crank length to grow with your child. 51

Recommended for Tour/Fun Rehab Commuting Family Characteristics very maneuverable and smooth riding high level of safety thanks to low center of gravity ergonomically designed for children ideal for rehabilitation e-motor option If you compare it with a conventional rehab trike, you ll notice immediately what makes the Trix more versatile and fun: the sturdy, brightly colored frame, the peppy spoke guards, and the list goes on and on. But there s a lot more to the Trix than cool looks. Whoever s experienced the intuitive controls and smooth handling knows exactly why the Trix has been officially recognized as a medical aid in Germany. This means: no time-consuming bureaucracy when applying for reimbursement. The decision of the GKV, Germany s national association of statutory health insurance funds, was presumably an easy one: significantly more stability than conventional rehab trikes, excellent maneuverability, a high level of active safety thanks to the disc brakes on the rear wheels, and easy operation. In no time at all, it can be ergonomically adjusted to any rider from 4 1 to 6 3 (1.25 1.90 m) in height. What luck that the Hase Bikes designers still had a few Trix up their sleeves! Accessories: A list of all available accessories can be found on pages 66-67 and on our website. TRIX Movement is essential to life. And sometimes a vehicle is essential to movement. TRIX Sunshine Sammy When Samuel comes zooming around the corner on his trike, people can t help but stop and smile. And the biggest smiles of all are on his parents faces. The young teenager is a true ray of sunshine and, thanks to his TRIX, mobility is fun again. 54 Beyond a field of head-high crops, the sound of a motor can be heard. But not a real one: a child is going vroom, vroom, vrooommm! Then a boy comes barreling around the corner on a trike, screaming with delight. Vroom. Followed by a small cloud of dust, which has barely settled by the time he s out of sight again. Samuel is our ray of sunshine, says Betty Fernandez, the boy s mother. He wakes up practically laughing and is in a good mood all day long, adds his father, David. Samuel and his parents are on one of their walks, which look something like this: 13-year-old Samuel races around on his Trix while Betty and David try to catch him the family s own version of tag. Or he rides ahead to an agreed stopping place and waits for them to catch up. Once the parents finally! arrive, Samuel gets a gummybear treat for his patience. The two of us aren t really bike freaks, explains Betty, almost apolo - getically, which is why we go walking with him. But we still have loads of fun. Especially Samuel. It

TRIX wasn t always this way: Samuel has Sjögren-Larsson syndrome, a genetic disorder that is actually most common in Sweden. In many cases, the disease progresses during periods of rapid growth, causing severe spasticity. After puberty, the condition remains stable. This is why Samuel is currently spending a lot of time in therapy sessions: occupational therapy, speech therapy, and wheelchair sports. The disease also causes mental retardation. Therefore, he can only be out and about when someone is with him. Samuel first experienced triking at the summer festival of his special school for physically disabled children. The Trix is part of his therapy but it s the part that s really fun for him, explains David, who works in the quality assurance department of a pharmaceutical company and is therefore no stranger to the field of medicine. Samuel uses a rollator and can only stand with the help of special devices called orthoses, which support his joints. But in the driver s seat of his trike, he experiences how much fun mobility can be. Because of his spasticity, he wasn t able to ride a standard Trix with gears and a freewheel he can t pedal consistently. In other words, a little more customization was needed no problem with the versatility of Hase Bikes: We had them equip the trike with a fixed gear and special pedals with calf support. Now, riding is a piece of cake. Without a freewheel, the pedals keep moving as long as the trike is in motion, even if Samuel loses his pedaling rhythm. And everyone knows that fixies are the latest rage. Another requirement: the Trix had to be matt black. Like all boys his age, Samuel loves super heroes. And with the Trix, he now has his very own Batmobile. Thanks to the fixed gear, Samuel can even ride in reverse if ever he accidently rolls a few centimeters past the agreed stopping point 55

Recommended for Tour/Fun Rehab Commuting Family Characteristics very maneuverable high level of safety thanks to low center of gravity good traction with differential (for trike) easy transition from wheelchair to trike e-motor option HANDBIKE The handicap stops where the fun begins. And challenges become chances. Those who can manage their everyday lives with a handicap have it good. And those who experience exhilaration and joy facing their mobility challenges have something else: the right vehicle for their passion. HASE BIKES HANDBIKE. Mobility is one thing. Being able to get everywhere you need to go and have fun on the way is another. This is what differentiates Hase Bikes Handbikes from wheelchairs with attachable handcycles. And our Handbikes offer practically all the same qualities as their sister models Kettwiesel, Lepus, and Pino: comfort, maneuverability, and safety, along with mobility at reasonable speeds. After all, being there is what counts. But trike genes give the Handbike a whole lot more: for example, an ingenious geometry and countless sophisticated details, like the handcrank assembly, which can be folded forward for especially easy mounting and dismounting. Or the Schlumpf internally geared crankset, which transforms the nine-speed Shimano gear system into a transmission with 18 gears, making the mountains barrier-free. Or choose the 14-speed universal shifting whiz Rohloff Speedhub. For braking, the powerful hydraulic Tektro disc brakes get the job done. And of course, even when changing gears, both hands stay where they belong: firmly on the handles. 57

HANDBIKE It s the taking part that matters. Regardless of ability. The Free Handi se Trophy is the Tour de France for team players. Competitors race 500 miles (800 km) through France on tandem trikes and canoes; in 2013, the strenuous and exciting course stretched from Lyon to Paris. Fifty-two men and women, with and without disabilities, demonstrated the power of teamwork. Jean-Philippe Maffioletti competed in 2012, returning to support the 2013 tour as a volunteer. And fan. 58 Jean-Philippe Maffioletti sits on a Handbike, grinning from ear to ear. The peloton of Trophy participants is shooting past. More than a dozen tandem trikes blaze around the curve. They re strong! says the Frenchman in awe. And he should know: for the inaugural race last year, he was a competitor. The teams are passing through the commune of Grez-sur-Loing on their 500-mile (800-km) journey to the French capital. Although the Tour de France is sometimes described as the tour of suffering, a more appropriate nickname for the Free Handi se Trophy would be tour of teamwork and not because it s any less challenging: anyone who s seen the daredevil men and women on their tandems knows how strenuous the course can be and how the competitors push themselves to their limits on both land and water. Each group of four competitors splits into two double teams consisting of one racer with a disability and one without. The teams compete on tandem trikes for the road portion of the race, and in canoes for the water portion. All of the teams come from companies that

HANDBIKE support the event. Hase Bikes supplies the special tandem trikes: each consists of either two Kettwiesels or a Kettwiesel-Handbike combo. The essence of the race: team spirit! This essence is also what inspired Jean-Philippe to return in 2013. This time as one of the many volunteers, who not only help guarantee safety along the route when the Trophy passes through a commune but also race to the racers aid in the case of accidents or technical problems. Unfortunately, I never finished the race, he laughs. We went into a tight curve with too much speed and lost control. But this incident gave him even more motivation to return for a second year. Here, we experience a unique form of cooperation everyone works together as a team. This requires a lot of communication, with words and eye contact, explains the 47-year-old. And this is the spirit of the whole race. The concept of competing with two teams of two is the strength of the Trophy. And able-bodied racers are just as dependent on their disabled team members as vice versa! If you saw him standing on the roadside with his cane, you d never suspect: Jean-Philippe Maffioletti has a rare illness that sporadically causes him to lose movement in his legs. But this doesn t dampen his enthusiasm for the sport. Which is why he is using his free time to tell this year s competitors all about the Kettwiesel Handbike. They only know the trike as part of the race s special vehicles, known as V.R.A.I.s : an abbreviation for their French name meaning specially adapted and essential adventure bikes. At the event, the spirit of teamwork is omni - present. It s this spirit that makes it possible for people with and without disabilities to push themselves beyond their limits. And the vehicles from Hase Bikes are the perfect tools for showing what can be accomplished by working together. 59

SPECIAL OPTIONS Special Steering / Shoulder Steering Unit: Twist and turn Mobility for people with no arms or short arms. The width of the steering unit is fully adjustable. A coaster brake is used for stopping, and the Shimano Nexus automatic hub gears, for shifting. Hand-crank Assembly Pino The sporty crank for tandemists with compromised leg function. The Handcrank Assembly for the PINO is height adjustable and can be folded forward for mounting and dismounting. Can be ordered with a new PINO (option) or as a conversion kit. Not compatible with the PINO PORTER. Additional special options: A list of all available options can be found on pages 64-65 and on our website. Fixed Gear Hub: More movement The trike becomes a fixie with a single gear. With the Fixed Gear Hub, the pedals of the KETTWIESEL or TRETS remain in motion as long as the trike is moving. Especially sensible for physical therapy patients and people with limited mobility (with friction clutch). Coaster Brake: Legwork When the legs are more mobile than the hands, the coaster brake ensures full braking power with high tech: pedaling backwards transfers the leg power to a hydraulic disc brake. Tow Bar: Follow me! Lame name, fine piece of equipment: with the Tow Bar, even standard bikes can be used as towing vehicles for the KETTWIESEL with a safety bonus: the integrated overrun brake works automatically. When the towing bike brakes, the KETTWIESEL brakes. Crank Shortener: Perfect fit For people with legs of different lengths or restrictions in leg mobility but also for kids. The pedals can be slid individ - ually along the crank for separate adjustment, optimizing rehabilitation training or allowing the crank length to grow with your child.
