3 Someone else s face Director's notes by Pappi Corsicato At the center of this movie there is a woman Bella who is also a TV star, an entrepreneur, a cynical representative of today's society, prepared to exploit, economically and mediatically, even tragedies in order to keep or increase her economic welfare, her social condition and especially her mediatic fame. To the extent that she doesn't even step back when having to swindle others and make an extreme sacrifice by completely changing her own face. Meanwhile she interacts with others only with a view to her own convenience and her own needs, without ever paying attention to her loved ones, to love and friendship. Obviously Bella and the other characters in this movie are a bitter model of today's world and society where appearing is more important than being and the relationship between reality and fiction is completely reversed, founding a scale of values where the more one is false the more one is believable. For this reason at the center of the movie there are two of the elements which best characterize today's Western world: plastic surgery and television. The story is set inside a plastic surgery clinic located in the mountains of Alto Adige. Inside and outside of the clinic we find various types of characters of different background, but they all have a common denominator: the wish to appear and to be protagonists of every event, even if only as spectators. The mediatic circus which forms around the clinic is the metaphor of the way in which nowadays through television every event, even a private one, is turned into a show. This is especially true for every tragedy. In an ironic, cynical and sometimes paradoxical way we see how these characters, who after all represent the society we live in, feed mainly on events of other people's lives, especially if these other people are famous personalities, without considering the truthfulness of the news and facts about them. Everything is believed, even if it is contradictory, as long as it's part of the show. The mechanism of confusion between fiction and reality is so well blended that once it has been triggered off it is hard to come out of it: we no longer distinguish what is true from what is false. Obviously the story is not be told moralistically. Through an amused and ironical view of history we try to create a sort of 'hideous' empathy with the characters who, though exaggerated, are faithful mirrors of the spectators. We are all accomplices of this extreme quest for illusion, endlessly reinventing reality. Even the choice of placing the clinic amongst the idyllic valleys of Alto Adige is meant to accentuate the contrast between the falseness of relationships and the naturalness of the physical world surrounding us which has been lost. The microcosm inside the clinic, made up of falsehood and amusing monstrosities, become more real than the natural and uncontaminated beauty of the landscape which, incredibly, seems even more fake: a world that no longer exists.
